This study was conducted to investigate the crossability, seed dormancy and overwintering ability of rice plant in GM (glufosinate ammonium-resistant lines. Iksan 483 and Milyang 204) and non-GM (their parents) or red rice (Andongaengmi). Seed-setting rate was not significantly different between GM and non-GM rice varieties. Iksan 483 and Milyang 204 showed the similar level of seed germination rate from 30 to 50 days after heading as compared to non-GM rice varieties. After overwintering in paddy field, seed germination rate of GM and non-GM rice varieties ranged from 14.3 % to 57.6 % in dry soil condition, but there was no germination in wet-soil except red rice. The result in wet-soil condition may help to set up a strategy for reducing the risk of gene flow of transgene via dispersal of seeds of GM plants. The crossability, seed dormancy and seed overwintering of Iksan 483 and Milyang 204, herbicide resistant GM rice varieties, were not significantly different compared to non-GM rice varieties. The results might be helpful to reduce the risk of transgene dispersal from GM crop via seeds and pollens.
This study was conducted to investigate the winter ecology of the green leafhopper(GLH), Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler, in Milyang, south-eastern part of Korea from early December to early April during 1990 to 1992. The instar distribution in the overwinteing GLH population collected in December 5th was most of 4th instar 77% to 79% followed by 3rd instar 15% to 17% and 5th instar 3%. These instar distribution rate in the overwintering GLH was changed with collecting dates during overwintering periods of the GLH. Among the GLH population collected, as a result, the distribution rate of the 5th instar was significantly increased in February 20th and was most of 5th instar 70% to 71% in March 19th and was adult 47% to 50% in April 8th. During two overwintering periods of the GLH, the averaged instars converted the instar distribution of the overwintering GLH into the numerical values were 3.91 and 3.86 instar in December 5th, 4.11 and 4.07 instar in February 20th, 4.75 and 4.79 instar in March 19th and 5.42 and 5.45 instar in April 8th respectively. In addition to, the developmental index between pre-collected date and post-collected date of the overwintering GLH was roughly more than 1.0 value. It means that the overwintering GLH was developed without cease though the development was very slow and deponded upon air temperature. The overwintering GLH population were significantly more collected at the levee than at the barley field.
We developed a model, termed D-PSA-K, to estimate the accumulated potential damage on kiwifruit canes caused by bacterial canker during the growing and overwintering seasons. The model consisted of three parts including estimation of the amount of necrotic lesion in a non-frozen environment, the rate of necrosis increase in a freezing environment during the overwintering season, and the amount of necrotic lesion on kiwifruit canes caused by bacterial canker during the overwintering and growing seasons. We evaluated the model's accuracy by comparing the observed maximum disease incidence on kiwifruit canes against the damage estimated using weather and disease data collected at Wando during 1994-1997 and at Seogwipo during 2014-2015. For the Hayward cultivar, D-PSA-K estimated the accumulated damage as approximately nine times the observed maximum disease incidence. For the Hort16A cultivar, the accumulated damage estimated by D-PSA-K was high when the observed disease incidence was high. D-PSA-K could assist kiwifruit growers in selecting optimal sites for kiwifruit cultivation and establishing improved production plans by predicting the loss in kiwifruit production due to bacterial canker, using past weather or future climate change data.
The significance of soil and/or rhisosphere populations of Erwinia carotovora sobsp. carotovora (Ecc) as a source of primary inoculum for tobacco hollow stalk disease has been demonstrated conclusively. The survival of Ecc in field soils fter overwintering was estimated by using the enrichment technique. The population number of pectolytic erwinia (PE) in field soils relatively decreased at the rate of 102-104 colony forming unit(CFU) per g of soil after overwintering. Higher level of PE population overwintered in the rhlzosphere foils of tobacco stubbles and detected more frequently in rhizosphere soils of weed plants than in those of bare fields. All of the tobacco stubbles collected from fields where tobacco had been grown the previous year contained Ecc. The more survived population number of PE at the 30cm depth of artifitiany infested soils than at the upper of those by introducing with diseased tobacco plant tissue after overwintering. Ecc overwintered effectively in rhizosphere soils of tobacco stubbles, overwintered weeds and tobacco debris in field soils.

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, overwinters in some protected areas in Korea. Using a sex pheromone trap, the adults were monitored since the occurrence of the overwintering populations. In Andong, P. xylostella exhibited four adult peaks in a year. Biological characters, such as cold tolerance, insecticide susceptibility, and developmental rate, were analyzed and showed a significant variation among different local overwintering populations. Population genetic variation was assessed with molecular markers, in which the initial high genetic variation among the overwintering populations decreased with the progress of seasons. These results suggests that there may be a significant migration of P. xylostella to decrease the genetic variation among the different local populations that are different in biological characters.
To study overwintering biology of the oriental tobacco budworm (OTB), Helicoverpaa.ssulta, OTB larvae were collected from middle and southern region of Korea in the autumn and rearedto diapausing pupae. Diapausing pupae were held at two different locations (Suwon and Chinju) and wererecollected in the spring to observe adult emergence rate and duration to adult emergence at 25$^{\circ}$C. Thesurvivorship of overwintering pupae was less than 5% when the pupae were buried in the soil in 20cmdepth. However, more than 60% of the pupae survived when they were kept in the plastic cup withartificial diet and were buried in the soil. The mean developmental periods of overwintering pupae at 25"C varied from 20.4 days to 43.9 days depending on years and locations where larvae were collected andpupae were held. The proportion of individuals which required longer than 30 days for development washigher in the population from the middle regions than those of southern regions. However, the proportiondecreased when the pupae collected from middle regions were held at Chinju, southern region. Chinju, southern region.
Studies were carried out to investigate the overwintering densities of spider mites, hatching rate and time of P. ulmi eggs, and seasonal occurrences of spider mites (P. ulmi and T. urticae) in apple orchards of Kyungpook province from 1987 to 1989. Overwintering density of P. ulmi eggs was higher in Kunwi, Andong, Chilgok but lower in Kyungju. Overovintering densities of T. urticae were high in all the regions. With the hatching time and rate for P. ulmi eggs, the first hatching ate was April 14, and the last was May 3, and the average hatching rate was 89.3%. The density of P. ulmi was high from early May to middle July and T. urticae begin to increase rapidly from middle June and then was continuously high upto fruit harvesting time.
With the aim of developing and indoor overwintering technique for Pearl oyster, Pinctada fucata martensii, the metabolic rates of young oysters (52.4-83.0 mm in shell length) were measured for 2 weeks at water temperatures of 8, 10, 12, and $14^{\circ}C$. The filtration rate (FR) ranged 0 to $4.84\;L\;h^{-1}gDW^{-1}$ (mean, $0.02{\pm}0.06 $ to $3.12{\pm}1.45$), with significant changes observed over thme except for the case of a water temperature of $14^{\circ}C$. Respiration rate (R) ranged from 0 to $2.370\;mgO2\;h^{-1}gDW^{-1}$ (mean, 0 to $1.77{\pm}0.37$), with significant respiratory disorders observed at temperatures below $12^{\circ}C$; in contrast, the rate increased on the $14^th$ day of the experiment in the case of a temperature of 14$^{\circ}C$. No significant difference was observed among the different water temperatures in terms of excretion rate (E) or absorption efficiency (Abs.eff), except for a significant decrease in aerobic metabolism in the case of water temperature of $8^{\circ}C$. The estimated scope for growth (SFG) ranged from -9.1 to $126.9\;J\;h^{-1}gDW^{-1}$ (mean. $-4.1{\pm}2.6$ to $82.85{\pm}42.6$). A significant energy Joss was found at $8^{\circ}C$, with negative SFG observed throughout the experiment and a gradual energy decrease observed over time at water temperatures of $10^{\circ}C$ and 120C. However. SFG remained positive throughout the experiment in the case of $14^{\circ}C$. The estimated minimum energy requirement, assessed from energy expenditure, is $8.00-34.24\;J\;h^{-1}gDW^{-1}$ (mean, $17.67{\pm}6.17$). In conclusion, the lowest temperature suitable for indoor overwintering is above $14^{\circ}C$.
This study was carried out to investigate the optimum management system during a overwintering for the production of Pinus densiflora container 2-0 seedlings. The experiment performed between 2005~2006 in a polyethylene film house (PE house) located at Yeoju-Gun in Kyungki-Do. During the winter in the PE house, the difference in maximum day temperature and minimum day temperature was large, and the difference in temperature was detected between the container keeping locations. During the winter season, the maximum day temperatures at the seedling bench in January and February were $32.8^{\circ}C$ and$36.6^{\circ}C$, respectively, whereas those at the ground in January and February were $16.0^{\circ}C$ and $24.4^{\circ}C$, respectively. Water contents of container seedlings was reduced gradually from the beginning the experiment, and reduced rapidly from February to March, and increased rapidly from April. Container seedlings showed different death rate according to the extending of the irrigation cycle. Death rate by one week and two weeks of irrigation cycle was 4.8% and 6.5%, and 38.5% and 49.4% of death rate occurred by three and four weeks of irrigation cycle, respectively. It is suggested that the proper irrigation cycle for P. densiflora 2-0 container seedlings during overwintering is two weeks. When containers placed directly on the ground, the root of container seedlings went out through the drainage of the container, and grew out in the soil. These roots were cut while moving the container to the bench in spring.
This study was conducted to evaluate overwintering of hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth), biomass, and inorganic N concentration in soil to verify the adaptability of eight cultivars of hairy vetch into country. Winter survival rate was higher for the hairy vetch cultivars, such as Hungvillosa or Ostsaat, than those of Minnie, Oregon common, and TTF1, which affected amount of biomass of each hairy vetch, with higher biomass observed in Hungvillosa or Ostsaat cultivar. There were no significant difference for the mineral nutrients of each hairy vetch cultivar. Inorganic N concentration in soil was increased at 10 days after mowing by application of Hungvillosa and Ostsaat cultivars that had highly produced N content from the raw materials.
