  • Project logistics is becoming increasingly important in overseas plant projects. Efficient logistics risk management is needed to reduce construction period and reduce costs. However, Korean construction firms bid unconditionally without sufficient experience and analysis on overseas plants contract, companies are gradually losing profitability on projects due to not considering profitability. Despite the significant effects on the profitability of Korean construction companies, and although these companies still continue to bid on overseas plant projects, policies to manage project logistics risks for safe transport and compliance with the contracted building schedule in the long term is still lacking. Hence, this study investigates the risk factors related to project logistics and to analyze the effect of project logistics risk on overseas plant business performance. We conducted a survey of project-related workers. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, among the logistics risk factors, overseas platform business people recognize operational risk and financial risk factors, which have a positive effect directly on overseas plant performance. Second, the ability to manage project logistics risks can have a significant impact on the success or failure of overseas plants. Finally, if logistics risk factors are managed on the basis of the research results confirmed through empirical analysis, it is possible to carry out more efficient and effective management of the project, which implies that this will have a positive effect on overseas plant business performance.

The results show that delivery risk and product risk were the most influential determinants of the level of trust level in overseas direct purchase sites. In addition, the results of this study confirm that the level of trust in overseas direct purchase sites has a strong influence on both the intention to recommend and the intention to continue patronizing the site. Moreover, this study conducted a mean difference analysis according to the types of overseas direct purchases (overseas direct delivery, overseas purchasing agency, and overseas delivery agency) and product categories (clothes, food and beverage products, and household appliances). • Domestic construction companies have difficulty in establishing strategies when entering overseas markets because they do not have an overseas construction economic sentiment index to refer to for data on overseas construction prospects. Considering that the fluctuation of overseas construction orders over the past decade has been substantial and large companies and SMEs are actively advancing overseas, this study developed an evaluation model for an overseas construction business sentiment index to grasp the economic experience of overseas construction companies. In 2021 Korean companies earned 30.6 billion in overseas construction contracts, 87% the level of the previous year, despite difficulties such as COVID-19 and low oil prices, thanks to efforts by construction companies to strengthen their strategies for entry, such as regional diversification, and government support for winning orders. Since the overseas construction industry fluctuates greatly due to changes in the international environment, it is necessary to investigate and analyze the economic sentiment index of overseas construction companies. In particular, despite the increase in overseas expansion of small and medium-sized construction companies and engineering companies, the provision of information on the overseas construction market sentiment index is insufficient, limiting the establishment of strategies for overseas construction expansion. Therefore, this study intends to develop an overseas construction market sentiment index model that can understand the economic sentiment of overseas construction companies, provide a forecast for overseas construction, and use it to establish overseas construction strategies and policies.

  • At present, no outside organization provides systematic support for business archives, even though there are companies that operate their own. To resolve this situation, this study suggested that overseas business archives professionals organization could apply in Korea by analyzing the form of organizations and functional roles. As such, the organization of professionals in overseas business archives was analyzed through their website, literature research, and email interviews of the staff. Based on the analysis, overseas organizations of business archives professionals were established in the form of sections and independent organizations to systematically support business archives through long-term projects. Thus, this study proposed an organizational structure of professionals organizations for the development of domestic business archives and the functional role of supporting activities, educational activities, and publishing activities. In addition, the ultimate development of business archives is clearly no longer the only solution to the change in perception and strategy of individual companies' business records. Moreover, this study is significant as a starting point for discussion on the establishment of business archives professionals or organizations.

  • This study undertakes a comparative analysis of the correlation between the condition of the domestic construction market and the expansion of overseas projects within construction companies, based on the vector error correction model. The analysis results verified that, in the post-IMF crisis period, domestic construction companies took on more overseas projects only when the residential construction market slowed down. Compared to the pre-crisis period, construction companies grew more responsive to the condition of the domestic market for residential construction, and they took on more overseas construction projects when the domestic market slumped. This is because the business portfolios of Korean construction companies' render them highly vulnerable to the condition of the residential construction market. When the domestic residential market slows down, the business condition of construction companies quickly takes a turn for the worse, and to cope with this, they turn to overseas projects to compensate for the slowing of the domestic market. As the analysis shows, expanding overseas construction projects as a way to turn around business condition amid a slow residential construction market actually undermines the management of the companies even further. In other words, shifting business focus toward an overseas market during a hard time might be useful for securing cash flow, but might not help to restore profitability. Thus, construction companies need to carefully manage their level of business diversification to ensure strategic flexibility.

  • The changes in business structure of domestic construction companies suggest that there is a close relationship between the volume of overseas project and a company's financial condition. Based on this assumption, this study conducts an empirical analysis on a relationship between overseas project and financial stability of a construction company. The ratio of liquidity and liability was used as liquidity index and stability index respectively. The analysis was based on quarterly time-series data between 2000 and 2010. Two models were constructed for the analysis: Model 1 was based on the liquidity ratio and the amount of domestic and overseas construction project; Model 2 was based on the debt ratio and the amount of domestic and overseas construction project. The analysis results showed that the increasing amount of overseas project facilitated short-term financing with greater liquidity, and yet it was not very effective in lowering the debt ratio. This suggests that the dramatic increase in overseas construction project, which is observed recently, is not entirely an optimistic sign.
