The Impact of Outsourcing Strategy on a Firm's Innovation and Internationalization

  • Purpose - Based on transaction cost perspective and institution-based perspective, this research attempts to investigate the effect of outsourcing on a firm's performance and how it interacts with institutional context in which the firms operate. Research design, data, and methodology -With a sample of 164 manufacturing firms form South Korea, we examine the direct effects of outsourcing on the a firm's level of product innovation and internationalization and the moderating effects of competitive pressure and property right protection as important external factors that could affect the effectiveness of outsourcing decision. Result - The findings show that outsourcing not only enhance a firm's capability to concentrate on its core competencies, but also to increase a firm's combinative capacity to acquire external knowledge. Furthermore, we finds that in a highly competitive environment, potential knowledge spillovers to other competitors may attenuate the potential benefits of outsourcing. Conclusion - Outsourcing can enhance a firm's innovation activities by providing valuable access to external knowledge and also to complementary resources from the external partners, which in turn enables firms to focus on core competences.

  • For the implementation of innovative products or services companies use different innovation strategies, in particular, outsourcing is quite widespread, given the high level of specialization and professionalism of companies that provide such services. The aim of this article was to evaluate the link between outsourcing of innovative activities and indicators of companies' efficiency. The methodology of the research includes the methods of correlation analysis and regression analysis to reveal the correlation between the use of outsourcing of innovative products and services and the turnover of the EU enterprises. The results show a high level of innovative activity of EU enterprises (50.3% innovatively active). Innovative business processes are the most widespread form of innovation activity (41% of enterprises implement business processes, and the indicator is higher than 41% in the most developed EU countries). The turnover of enterprises with new or substantially improved products was found to grow by 10.92% for the period 2016-2018. The correlation analysis shows weak direct links between the indicator of turnover growth and the number of enterprises that have independently implemented innovations, or have implemented innovations jointly with third-party companies, or using outsourcing services. The highest level of direct connection was found between the growth of turnover of enterprises that launched a new product for the market and the growth of the number of enterprises that implemented innovations with the involvement of organizations (correlation 0.273). Based on the regression analysis it was found that with a 1% change in the growth rate of the number of innovation-active enterprises, the growth rate of turnover from new or improved products increased by 5.67%. At the same time, with a 1% change in the growth rate of the number of enterprises that implement innovation through outsourcing, the growth rate of turnover from new or improved products will increase by 7.15%.

기업의 핵심역량이 IT 아웃소싱 성과에 직접적인 관련이 있을 것인가? (Does the Understanding of Core Competencies Matter to IT Outsourcing Performance?)

  • IT outsourcing providers has been expanded from a single functional system to the entire IT service to gain sustainable competitiveness. This new trend of IT outsourcing need outsourcing management capability based on a firm's core capacity. Hiring external IT service providers to manage part or all of its information-related services helps a firm focus on its core business and provides better services to its clients, thus obtaining sustainable competitive advantage. This research investigates the major factors that determine the level of a particular firm's success at IT outsourcing. Based on process innovation and core-competency theories, we identify three significant components of a firm's IT outsourcing management method (ITOMM): level of core-competency-based management, maturity of outsourced tasks, and maturity of outsourcing management. Comprehensive data collection was conducted through an outsourcing association. The survey data were analyzed using a structural analysis method. Maturity of outsourced tasks and maturity of outsourcing management were found to affect project performance directly, while level of core-competency-based management only indirectly impacted project performance through its positive impact on the other two ITOMM components.

  • As a result of the fast development of Information communication technology, the competitive advantage of companies and the service quality of nonprofit organizations has been largely changed. Corresponding to this kind of change, companies have tried to make production improvement, competitive strengthening, and organizational innovation. Meanwhile, the nonprofit organizations directed by the government are pursuing the service innovation from general administration area to the public service for civilians. In relation to this, risk management of the company's information systems outsourcing has largely been studied until now. However, the study of risk management for nonprofit organization information systems outsourcing has rarely been made. In this paper, to provide the theoretical base for further research, we have attempted to develop the evaluation framework for risk management of information systems outsourcing considering the characteristics of nonprofit organizations.

  • Despite the continual growth of IT outsourcing market, the outsourcing contracts are mostly short-term contracts. Because these short-term contracts need continual recontracts, the research on the factors that influence the outsourcing recontracts is needed. This research has been done to find out the factors of making the outsourcing recontracts successfully by stating the relationship between outsourcing recontract and the outsourcing performance factors. As a result of this research, customer factors and innovation factors are found to be influential factors on whether you make a recontract or not. And also the research have showed customer factors are major decision criteria on outsourcing recontracts.

  • 기업과 정부의 연구개발(R&D: Research and Development) 투자는 지속적으로 증가해, 2021년 공공과 민간의 전체 연구개발비는 102조 1,352억 원으로 100조원을 돌파하였고, GDP 대비 R&D 투자 비중이 4.96%로 이스라엘에 이어 전 세계 2위 수준으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 100조원을 돌파한 국내 연구개발 투자의 R&D 생산성 제고 측면에서 국내 연구 서비스산업 현황과 연구개발(R&D) 혁신 생태계를 통계청의 기업활동조사 데이터를 바탕으로 분석하고 글로벌 연구 서비스산업과 기업 현황과 연구(R&D) 서비스 산업 지원을 위한 정부 정책을 조사 및 분석하였다. 특히, 본 연구에서는 기업활동조사 데이터를 바탕으로 업종별 연구개발(R&D) 서비스 외부 위탁에 대한 분석과 연도별 연구개발(R&D) 서비스 외부 위탁에 대한 조사를 통해 국내 연구(R&D) 서비스산업 현황에 대해 조사 분석하였다. 이를 통해 업종별 국내 연구(R&D) 서비스 산업 수요에 대한 주요 변화 추이를 제조업과 서비스업 관점에서 도출하였다. 분석 결과 국내 R&D 생태계는 전통적인 제조기업의 R&D 아웃소싱 수요가 정체된 것에 비해 서비스기업의 R&D 아웃소싱 수요가 급속도로 증가하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 국외 위탁기업이 지속적으로 확대되는 반면에 국내 연구개발 위탁 기업은 비중이 감소 추세를 보이고 있는 상태이다. 또한 서비스 업종별로 차별적인 특징을 보여주었다. 본 연구에서는 글로벌 연구 서비스 기업에 대한 조사와 연구(R&D) 서비스산업 지원 정책에 대한 분석을 바탕으로, 이러한 변화하는 기술 혁신과 연구(R&D) 서비스 수요에 대응하기 위해 제조기업과 서비스기업 R&D 아웃소싱 균형지원, 국내 연구개발 외부위탁 확대, 서비스업종 특화 R&D 아웃소싱 전략수립, 개방형 R&D 생태계 구축, 소재·부품·장비 전략과의 연계 혁신 방안을 제시하였다.

The Contribution of R&D Outsourcing to Productivity Growth

  • Few studies have focused on the impact of R&D outsourcing on technological innovation and productivity despite the increased importance of R&D outsourcing. This study analyzes the productivity effects of investment in R&D outsourcing with a sample of Korean manufacturing industries from 2001 to 2009. The estimation results show a nonlinear U-shaped relationship between productivity and the share of R&D outsourcing capital for total R&D capital. This implies that the cost of R&D outsourcing outweighs its benefits in the early stages of R&D outsourcing. The U-shaped relationship is particularly pronounced in high-technology industries.

한국 기업의 연구개발 외주활동 결정요인 분석 (Determinants of Korean Firms' R&D Outsourcing)

  • 본 연구는 연구개발 외주비중(총연구개발비 중 외부 연구개발비 비율)에 영향을 주는 기업요인을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이와 관련된 4개의 가설을 검증하기 위해 통계청의 2006년 기업활동실태조사 데이터를 이용해 토빗분석을 수행했다. 본 논문의 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기술역량이 높은 기업일수록 연구개발 외주비중이 높다. 즉 근로자수 대비 특허수 또는 연구개발 집약도(매출액 대비 연구개발비)가 높은 기업은 연구개발 외주에 의존하는 경향이 있다. 그러나 사내연구소를 보유한 기업의 경우 연구개발 외주를 주더라도 그 비중이 낮았다. 둘째, 혁신활동의 보완재로 IT솔루션을 활용하는 기업은 연구개발 외주비중이 높다. 셋째, 대기업일수록 내부 연구개발보다 외부 연구개발비의 비중이 높다.

제3자 물류 서비스공급자의 역량을 통한 우간다 식품 가공업체의 물류 아웃소싱 성공에 대한 영향 분석 (Analyzing the impact on logistics outsourcing success for Ugandan food processing firms through third-party logistics service providers' capabilities)

  • 최근 급속한 세계화로 인해 물류 아웃소싱이 전 세계적으로 확대되고 있으며, 이것은 견고한 물류시스템을 구축하는 수단으로 간주되고 있다. 그러나 많은 기업이 물류 아웃소싱 계약에 어려움을 겪고 있어 기업의 내부 관리를 위해 물류 기능을 회복해야 하는 어려움이 계속되고 있다. 본 연구는 유연성, 통합, 혁신 및 기술 역량과 같은 물류 서비스 제공자(LSP)의 조직 역량이 우간다 식품 가공 회사의 물류 아웃소싱 성공에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 평가하는 것을 목표로 한다. 구조화된 설문조사를 이용하여 우간다 캄팔라에 있는 211개 식품 가공 회사에서 수집한 횡단면 데이터를 SmartPLS 3.3.7 소프트웨어를 통한 PLS-SEM(부분 최소제곱-구조방정식 모형화)으로 분석하여 이론적 관계를 검토하였다. 연구 결과에 따르면 기술 및 혁신 역량은 물류 아웃소싱 성공에 긍정적이고 상당한 영향을 미치지만, 유연성 및 통합 역량의 효과는 미미한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 중요도성과분석(IPMA) 결과 물류 아웃소싱 성공을 위해서는 기술 역량이 우선순위가 가장 높고 그다음이 혁신 역량인 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 유연성과 통합 역량은 우선순위가 낮았다.

기업내 조직 관성이 클라우드 컴퓨팅 전환 의도에 미치는 영향에 관한 실증적 연구 (Unveiling the Influence of Corporate Organizational Inertia on Cloud Computing Transition Intentions: An Empirical Inquiry)

  • This study explores the tendency of corporations and organizations to continue with their current processes despite having incentives for better Information Technology (IT) innovation or transition. In this context, the study argues that organizations may struggle with 'outsourcing inertia,' a well-known concept referring to an organization's deficient adaptability to environmental changes, particularly defined here as the organization's slow adaptation to changes in outsourcing levels. To verify this, the study analyzes how key variables identified from existing IT Outsourcing (ITO) decision-making research and recent studies on cloud computing transitions actually affect a firm's transition intentions. In the process, this study investigates the moderating effect of a firm's outsourcing inertia, utilizing the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework and the Push-Pull-Mooring (PPM) model based on migration theory to propose a research model. The study aims to contribute to finding strategic approaches necessary for facilitating IT innovation and transition by understanding the impact of outsourcing inertia on the decision-making process related to IT outsourcing. It is important to note that the majority of domestic conglomerates own IT subsidiaries, which significantly influence the process of transitioning to cloud computing. Nevertheless, research on the impact of IT subsidiaries on cloud computing transition is relatively scarce. Based on this background, this study proposes that IT subsidiaries within domestic conglomerates can act as a significant mooring factor of organizational inertia in the decision-making process for adopting cloud computing. Through this, the study seeks to provide strategic insights for overcoming organizational inertia faced by IT subsidiaries during the cloud computing transition process.
