  • This study analyzed the ecological characteristics of the wetland protection area at tthe Nakdong River through vegetation and biota surveys, which showed that brackish water meets fresh water, a unique ecological environment has been created, biodiversity is high, and diverse habitats are distributed. Eleven plant communities, including four woody communities and seven grass communities, are distributed along the coast, and a total of 514 species, including 11 endangered wildlife species, were identified in terms of species diversity. Among them, the species diversity of the Eulsuk-do area was found to be relatively higher than that of other Barreir Islands areas. The presence of a population of Sterna albifrons on Sinja-do and a population of Eremias argus on Jinwo-do, an area outside the boundaries of the wetland protection area, confirmed the conservation value of the wetlands and the need to expand the boundaries of the wetland protection area. It is judged that this information can be used as basic information for a systematic conservation and management plan for the wetland protection area at the Nakdong River Estuary and as basic data to support the establishment of a policy.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the micromorphology of vessel wall sculpture such as shape of perforation plate, perforation rim, steepness of perforation plate, occurrence of vestured pit, warty layer and ray-vessel pitting on 13 species of Fagaceae in Korea. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. In the species examined, all sample species except Fagus crenata var. multinervis have simple perforation plate. But Fagus crenata var. multinervis has simple and scalariform perforation plate (it was called to combination perforation plate) in a tree stem. 2. The shapes of perforation rim could be classified into five types; Type A without tail, Type B with small tail on both sides, Type C with long tail on both sides, Type D with tail only one side and Type E with the very short interval between perforations. Among five types, Type Band C have higer frequency of distribution than the others. 3. The steepness of perforation plate measured was about 20 degree on pore zone and 43 degree on outside parts of pore zone. 4. Species with vestured pit were Q. aliena, Q, dentata, Q. variabilis, Fagus crenata var. multinervis, Castanopsis cuspidata var sieboldii, Q. acuta, Q. stenophylla, and Q. glauca. But the extent of vesturing was very slight and vestured pits were observed mainly in ray-vessel pit of some vessel elements. 5. Species with warty layer on the inner surface wall of all vessel elements were Q. acuta, Q. stenophylla, Q. glauca, Fagus crenata var. multinervis and species with warty layer of some vessel elements were Q. aliena, Q, dentata, Q. variabilis, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii. 6. Species with palisade ray-vessel pit were Q. acuta, Q. stenophylla, Q. glauca, Castanea crenata, Castanea bungeana, Q. aliena, Q. serrata, Q. mongolica, and species with scalariform ray-vessel pit was Fagus crenata var. multinervis and species with oval ray-vessel pit were Q, dentata, Castanopsis cuspidata var sieboldii.

  • Patterns of epilithic algal colonization on artificial substrata (unglazed ceramic tiles) were investigated from 23rd April to 3rd July 1999 at weekly intervals over a 10 weeks period outside and inside the mesocosm in Togyo reservoir within the Civilian Passage Restriction Line near Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Korea. The highest standing crops of epilithic algae was 1,798$\cdot$10³ cells$\cdot$$cm^{-2}$ outside the mesocosm on 26th June and also inside the mesocosm those was 2,391$\cdot$10³ cells$\cdot$$cm^{-2}$ on 26th June, 9 weeks after the experiment began. The dominants outside the mesocosm were Achnanthes minutissima, Navicula bicephala, Oscillatoria angusta, Synedra delicastissima, S. tenuissima, S. ulna v. danica and Tabellaria flocculosa, and those inside the mesocosm were Achnanthes minitissima, Coenochloris polycocca, Fragilaria crotonenesis, Peridinium cinctum, Synedra delicatissima, Tabellaria flocculosa and Ulothrix subtilissima. Diatoms were most abundant and Achnanthes minutissima was the most important species colonizing on the tiles. Chlorophyll-a content was highest value of 5.4 mg$\cdot$$m^{-2}$ on 19th June after 8 weeks growth outside the mesocosm and was 24.4 mg$\cdot$$m^{-2}$ on 26th June, 9 weeks after the experiment began on tiles inside the mesocosm. It was also shown that unglazed ceramic tiles were a more suitable substratum for colonization than the glass slides. Consequently the substratum selection plays an important role in the colonization by the epilithic algal community.

  • This study was carried out to provide a basic data for preservation of Pinus desiflora forest as cultural landscape forest by analyzing characteristics of plant community of P. desiflora forest in Geumjeongsan(mountatin) in Busan city. In order to analyze plant community of P. densiflora in Geumjeongsan, we set up 10 study plots inside and 8 plots outside of Geumjeongsansung(mountain fortress, hereinafter 'Sansung')(unit area: $400m^2$), a total of 18 plots. TWINSPAN analysis divided these 18 study plots into 6 communities which are Querqus serrata-P. desiflora community, P. desiflora community, P. desiflora-Q. serrata community, P. thunbergii-P. densiflora community, P. densiflora-P. thubergii-Q. acutissima community, and P. densiflora-Platycarya strobilacea community. Importance Percentage (I.P.) of each area and DBH class distribution of main species showed that P. densiflora community would succeed to Q. serrata community or C. tschonoskii community. Analysis on tree age found out that communities in the Sansung were 32~37 years old and those outside the Sansung were 44~57 years old. Shannon's species diversity index ranged from 0.4826 to 1.2499. Regarding correlation between species, P. densiflora had negative correlation with Styrax japonica. Based on abovementioned result we expected ecological succession from P. densiflora community to Q. serrata community inside of the Sansung. Outside the Sansung, succession from P. densiflora-P. thunbergii community to C. tschonoskii-Q. serrata community was expected. In order to manage P. densiflora forest as cultural landscape forest, Q. spp in the understory and shrub layer and deciduous broad-leaved arboreal trees should be managed. Tree crown management of deciduous broad-leaved trees in competition with P. desiflora, is also required.

  • Nitrite accumulation is not unusual in batch processes such as sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with high-strength of ammonium or nitrate wastewaters. A possible mechanism of nitrite inhibition on Acinetobacter was depicted in a biochemical model, which the protonated species, nitrous acid form of nitrite, affects proton relating transport at the proton-pumping site crossing the cell membrane under unlimited carbon and phosphorus conditions. This effect exerts inhibition of phosphorylation under aerobic condition and yields low APT/ADP ratio, consequently decrease poly-P synthesis and phosphorus uptake from outside the cell in the model.

  • The bdelloids collected from various terrestrial habitats such as mosses, lichens, mushrooms on tree trunks, leaf litter and soil at four different locations in Korea were investigated. Five bdelloids new to Korea were identified: Macrotrachella inermis Donner, 1965, Macrotrachela magna Schulte, 1954, Macrotrachela oblita Donner, 1949, Habrotrocha eremita (Bryce, 1894) and Habrotrocha schultei Donner, 1965. All these rotifers except M. inermis are new to Asia as well. Remarkably, these five Korean new records included four rare species with poorly known distributions. M. magna and H. schultei are recorded outside their type localities for the first time. M. oblita has been reported only from five European countries, and M. inermis has been known from three European countries and Eastern Turkey before the present study. The taxonomy and distribution of each rare bdelloid are discussed here.

  • Rotifers collected from various terrestrial and aquatic habitats such as mosses on trees or rocks, tree barks, wet mosses and wet leaf litter at streams, and dry leaf litter at four different locations in Korea, were investigated. Thirteen species belonging to nine genera in five families of monogonont and bdelloid rotifers were identified: Bryceella perpusilla Wilts, Martinez Arbizu and Ahlrichs, 2010, Collotheca ornata (Ehrenberg, 1830), Habrotrocha flava Bryce, 1915, H. pusilla (Bryce, 1893), Macrotrachela aculeata Milne, 1886, M. plicata (Bryce, 1892), Mniobia montium Murray, 1911, M. tentans Donner, 1949, Notommata cyrtopus Gosse, 1886, Philodina lepta Wulfert, 1951, P. tranquilla Wulfert, 1942, Pleuretra hystrix $Barto{\check{s}}$, 1950 and Proalinopsis caudatus (Collins, 1873). All these rotifers are new to Korea, and B. perpusilla, H. flava, M. montium, P. caudatus, P. hystrix and P. lepta are new to Asia as well. Of interest, the present study is the first to record B. perpusilla outside its type locality. In addition, P. lepta has previously been recorded from only three European countries.

  • The present census on freshwater bryozoans in the Han River, Geum River and in lentic water bodies in Gangwon Province revealed three gymnolaemate species. Two of them-Hislopia prolixa Hirose and Mawatari, 2011 and Victorella pavida Saville Kent, 1870 were recorded for the first time from South Korea. Paludicella articulata (Ehrenberg, 1831), on the other hand, had already been documented from a few sites since 1941. The bryozoans, all belonging to the order of Ctenostomata, were found on a variety of substrates in freshwater (H. prolixa and P. articulata) and brackish habitats (V. pavida). Hislopia prolixa had recently been established as a new species and this is the first record for an occurrence outside of Japan, where it had been newly described from Lake Biwa and nearby satellite lakes.

  • Two marine harpacticoid copepods are newly recorded from Korea : Eudactylopus specitabilis (Brian, 1923) and E. andrewi Sewell , 1940. Six species are currently recognized in the genus Eudactylopus, multitidue of which were often disputed among authors on their taxonomic status, so we treat here the taxonomic features of the two species above on the basis of specimens from South Sea and East Sea of Korea. E.spectabilis occurred first outside the Mediterranean Sea. and is fully redescribed with illustrations. Important male characters like the shape of leg 2 endopod and leg 5 with its setal arrangement are particularly emphasized as the diagnostic characters.
