  • Purpose: As the demand of a simple and precise method increases to evaluate the performance of the inverter type x-ray unit, we evaluated the usefulness of the recently-introduced X-ray Multi-Function Test Device (moldel : Xi (unfors)-prestige). Method: We compared the performance of X-ray Multi-Function Test Device (XMFTD) which is non-inveasive type device with the performance of Dynalyzer III that has been most widely used inveasive type measure device. Result: X-ray output dose was increased a little in the XMFTD, but both devices were below the performance evaluation standard, 0.002 in the output reproducibility. Linearity of XMFTD were below 0.1 which means that Dynalyzer III showed more excellency in linearity. As the the accuracy of exposure factor, 1.8 and 2 tube voltage, 2.01 and 2.3 tube current were measured. The exposure time was also measured by 0.01 sec ${\pm}10%$. Both devices were within the acceptance of performance evaluatioin standard. Conclusion: We proved the usefulness of X-ray Multi-Function Test Device (model: Xi (unfors)-prestige) to evaluated the performance on reproductibility and linearity of X-ray output and accuracy of exposure factor of inverter type unit.

  • Ascorbic acid is one of the most well-known nutritional supplement and antioxidant found in fruits and vegetables. Calcium ascorbate has been developed to mitigate the gastric irritation caused by the acidity of ascorbic acid. The aim of this study was to compare calcium ascorbate and ascorbic acid, focusing on their antioxidant activity and effects on gastric juice pH, total acid output, and pepsin secretion in an in vivo rat model, as well as pharmacokinetic parameters. Calcium ascorbate and ascorbic acid had similar antioxidant activity. However, the gastric fluid pH was increased by calcium ascorbate, whereas total acid output was increased by ascorbic acid. In the rat pylorus ligation-induced ulcer model, calcium ascorbate increased the gastric fluid pH without changing the total acid output. Administration of calcium ascorbate to rats given a single oral dose of 100 mg/kg as ascorbic acid resulted in higher plasma concentrations than that from ascorbic acid alone. The area under the curve (AUC) values of calcium ascorbate were 1.5-fold higher than those of ascorbic acid, and the $C_{max}$ value of calcium ascorbate (91.0 ng/ml) was higher than that of ascorbic acid (74.8 ng/ml). However, their $T_{max}$ values were similar. Thus, although calcium ascorbate showed equivalent antioxidant activity to ascorbic acid, it could attenuate the gastric high acidity caused by ascorbic acid, making it suitable for consideration of use to improve the side effects of ascorbic acid. Furthermore, calcium ascorbate could be an appropriate antioxidant substrate, with increased oral bioavailability, for patients with gastrointestinal disorders.

  • The technology of Computer Graphics (CG) has been in great progress for almost 20 years and has proven to be a valuable tool for a broad variety of fields, including nuclear engineering. To work in any hazardous environment for example radiation field is particularly challenging because the danger is not always visually apparent. In this study as the application of CG to nuclear engineering field, we proposed to develop a radiation risk recognition aided system in which various radiation information; radiation risks, radiation distribution, hazard information and so on, were visualized by CG. The system used the server and client system. In the server there were two parts; one (main-server) was the database part having various data and the other (sub-server) was the visualization part visualizing the human phantom by POV-Ray. In the client there was the input and output part. The outputs from the system were various radiation information represented by coloring, circle graph and line graph intuitionally. The system is useful for a broad range of activities including radiation protection, radiation management, dose minimization, and demonstration to the public.

  • A method of making inserts for shaped fields in electron beam therapy on the Mevatron KD 67-7467 Linear Acclerator is introduced. The inserts are made from an alloy called Lipowitz metal. These are designed to fit the inside of the standard Siemens cones. Studies have shown that this method does not adversely affect field flatness. However, if the ratio of shaped field to open field is greater than about 70%, the output dose is significantly changed by the inserts. Because the cone ratios for the fields do not follow the open cone ratio curves on the Mevatron KD 67-7467, we separated the cone ratio suggested by Biggs into two parts, the insert ratio and the cone factor. The dosimetry for these shaped beams has been investigated extensively.

  • In a preliminary screening of plant extracts for the antigastritic and anti- Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) actions in rats, the ethanol extract of Amomi Semen (AS) showed positive activity in HCl Ethanol-induced gastric lesions and H. pylori. Among the systematic fractions of hexane, chloroform, butanol and water, the most potent butanol fraction significantly reduced HCl, Ethanol-induced gastric lesions at the oral dose of 350 mg/kg. Also butanol fraction has an inhibitory effect on the growth of H. pylori $(MIC=1.43\;{\mu}g/mL)$. In pylorus ligated rats, butanol fraction showed decrease in the volume of gastric secretion and acid output, of which effects were stronger in other fractions. We isolated 6 subfractions by column chromatography. The protective effects of 6 subfractions of Amomi Semen were also significant in the HCl, Ethanol induced gastric lesion model. These results might suggest that they had inhibitory action in gastric lesion through inhibition of gastric acid secretion. Butanol fraction of AS can be applied as treatment of H. pylori. Butano fractions and ethanol extract of AS was carried out or the development of a new gastroprotective supplementary product.

  • Screening with low-dose spiral computed tomography (LDCT) has been shown to reduce lung cancer mortality by about 20% when compared to standard chest radiography. One of the problems arising from screening programs is that large amounts of CT image data must be interpreted by radiologists. To solve this problem, automated detection of pulmonary nodules is necessary; however, this is a challenging task because of the high number of false positive results. Here we demonstrate detection of pulmonary nodules using six off-the-shelf convolutional neural network (CNN) models after modification of the input/output layers and end-to-end training based on publicly databases for comparative evaluation. We used the well-known CNN models, LeNet-5, VGG-16, GoogLeNet Inception V3, ResNet-152, DensNet-201, and NASNet. Most of the CNN models provided superior results to those of obtained using customized CNN models. It is more desirable to modify the proven off-the-shelf network model than to customize the network model to detect the pulmonary nodules.

  • The purpose of this study were to determined the effect of laser irradiation on the fibroblast activity. Cultures of 3T3 fibroblasts were subjected to Helium Neon laser(632.8 nm) irradiation of various energy density. On one, two and three consecutive days the fibroblast monolayers wert irradiated for period from 0 to 32 minutes with 8 mW of average output power. The fibroblast activity was determined by the quantitative assay of MTT, SRB and NR after incubation of the fibroblasts for 24 hours. Results show that exposure duration from 2 min to 32 min could increase MTT at three consecutive days, whereas control and 1 min, one and two days irradiation had were not inclosed. The SRB and NR were inclosed at two and three consecutive days from 2 min to 32 min, whereas control and 1 min, and once radiation were not increased. These result demonstrate that energy density from 0.48 to 7.64 J/cm could increase cellular protein contents and fibroblast activity at more than twice irradiation of laser, whereas low energy density (less than 0.24 J/m) and once irradiation of laser had no effect. The results suggest that the beneficial effect of the He-Ne laser with adequate dose on fibroblast activity in vitro.

  • In this study, we investigated the protective action of glucuronopyranoside flavonoids (QGC, AGC, LGC) on gastritis in rats. QGC, AGC and omeprazole decreased the gastric volume significantly, and each $ID_{50}$ was 0.75, 0.54 and 8.5 mg/kg, respectively, thus the order of potency was AGC, QGC and omeprazole. They also decreased acid output, and each $ID_{50}$ was 7.81, 0.58 and 6.71 mg/kg, respectively, thus the order of potency was AGC, omeprazole and QGC. They inhibited gastritis induced by indomethacin, and it recovered significantly by increasing the GSH levels in gastritis. The gastric MPO activity in the gastritis group increased more than in the normal group. QGC, LGC, or AGC administration reduced moderately the MPO activity in a dose-dependent manner. This study demonstrated that AGC, QGC, or LGC showed potent efficacy on the gastritis, by preventing oxidative stress. These results suggest that QGC, AGC, or LGC have gastroprotective effect in rats.

  • In an effort to prevent the formation of DBPs from disinfection and the microbial regrowth in distribution systems, the ozonation followed by biological filtration process in drinking water treatment train has been recently developed as an alternative process to reduce effectively water-born organic matter as precursor. There are, however, insufficient for the consistent information and data about the relation between ozone dosage based on organic surrogate parameter, TOC or DOC and effect of ozonation on BDOC formation. This study is to review critically for the effect of ozonation on biodegradability on the basis of published technical papers including the output from author's research laboratory. It truned out that : 1. ozonation in the presence of organic matter has a tendancy to increase in BDOC content, 2. the rate of BDOC formation was maximum below 1mg $O_3/mg$ DOC of ozone dose, but about maximum content of BDOC was obtainable at the range from 1.5mg $O_3/mg$ DOC to 2mg $O_3/mg$ DOC, 3. from above 1mg $O_3/mg$ DOC, the rate of BDOC formation became slow down, 4. from above 2mg $O_3/mg$ DOC, BDOC formation was quantitatively negligible, In conclusion, it needs further systematic study and research concerned to biodegradability and treatability by ozonation in terms of organic characteristics and experimental conditions because it was hard to find out the consistent experimental data comparable each other that were performed by numbers of research authors.
