This research focuses on simulation and visualization of flow field characteristics inside a centrifugal pump. The 3D numerical analysis was carried out by using a numerical CFD tool, addressing a Reynolds Average Navier-Stock code with a standard k-${\varepsilon}$ two-equation turbulence model. The simulation accounts for friction head loss due to rough walls at suction, impeller, discharge areas and volumetric head loss at impeller wear ring. A comparison of performance curves between simulation and experimentation is included, and it reveals a same trend of those results with a small difference of maximum 5 %. At best efficiency point, velocity vectors are smooth but it changes significantly under off-design point, a strong recirculation appears at the outlet of impeller passages near tongue area. A relatively uniform preassure distribution was observed around the impeller in despite of the tongue. Within the volute, because of its geometry, spiral vortexes formed, proving that the flow field in this region was relatively turbulent and unsteady.

A low order panel method based on the perturbation potential is applied for prediction of performance of blown-flap rudders. In order to improve the solution behavior at the large angle of attacks, the geometry of the trailing wake sheet is computed by aligning freely with the local flow. The effect of the wake sheet roll-up is also included with use of a high order panel method. The flow in the gap between the main component and the flap of the rudder is modeled as Couette flow. The effects of the gap and the flow jet are included in application of a kinematic and a dynamic boundary condition on the inlet and the outlet of the gap as well as on the flap and the wake. The results with the present method are compared with existing experimental data. The method is shown to be capable of determining accurately the flow characteristics even for large flap angles.
The benefits of thermal stratification in sensible heat storage systems has been considered and studying by several investigators. In this paper, the basic data which is hard to obtain normally through the experiment were obtainable through the computer simulation. The major objectives of the study were to assess the benefits of stratified storage in residential solar water heating application and to suggest the optimum design parameters. From the computer simulation, following results were obtained. 1. The solar load fraction increases with increasing the number of tank segments. In these simulation, the magnitude of the improvement was about 10%. 2. The solar load fraction increases when the ratio of diameter to height of the tank(H/D) increases to 3, but H/D exceed 3 then, the solar load fraction decreases. In these simulation, the magnitude of the improvement was about 3%. 3. Increasing the collector flow rate slightly improved the performance of the mixed storage system(Node=1). But, for the stratified storage system(Node=N), the solar load fraction increases with decreasing flow rate until the point is reached at which the collector outlet temperature reaches the boiloff limit of $100^{\circ}C$ over some portion of the simulation period.
The objective of this study is to develop a short-term precipitation-streamflow coupling method for real-time river flow forecast. The coupled method is based on the RDAPS model for precipitation and atmospheric simulation and the SFM model for streamflow simulation. The selected study area is the 2,703-km$^2$ Soyang River basin with outlet at Soyang dam site. The rainfall-runoff event from 18 to 24 July 2003 is selected for the performance test of predicted precipitation and streamflow. It can be seen that the simulated basin-scale precipitation from the RDAPS can be useable as an input for SFM hydrologic model. Short-term hydrometeorological simulations using the RDAPS and SFM model were well captured important hydrometeorological characteristics in this study area. It is concluded that atmospheric precipitation forecast would be useful for streamflow forecast.

Asymmetric tip clearance in an axial compressor induces pressure and velocity redistributions along the circumferential direction in an axial compressor. This paper presents the mechanism of the flow redistribution due to the asymmetric tip clearance with a simple numerical modeling. The flow field of a rotor of an axial compressor is predicted when an asymmetric tip clearance occurs along the circumferential direction. The modeling results are supported by CFD results not only to validate the present modeling but also to investigate more detailed flow fields. Asymmetric tip clearance makes local flow area and resultant axial velocity vary along the circumferential direction. This flow redistribution 'seed' results in a different flow patterns according to the flow coefficient. Flow field redistribution patterns are largely dependent on the local tip clearance performance at low flow coefficients. However, the contribution of the main flow region becomes dominant while the tip clearance effect becomes weak as the flow coefficient increases. The flow field redistribution pattern becomes noticeably strong if a blockage effect is involved when the flow coefficient increases. The relative flow angle at the small clearance region decreases which result in a negative incidence angle at the high flow coefficient. It causes a recirculation region at the blade pressure surface which results in the flow blockage. It promotes the strength of the flow field redistribution at the rotor outlet. These flow pattern changes have an effect on the blade loading perturbations. The integration of blade loading perturbation from control volume analysis of the circumferential momentum leads to well-known Alford's force. Alford's force is always negative when the flow blockage effects are excluded. However when the flow blockage effect is incorporated into the modeling, main flow effects on the flow redistribution is also reflected on the Alford's force at the high flow coefficient. Alford's force steeply increases as the flow coefficient increases, because of the tip leakage suppression and strong flow redistribution. The predicted results are well agreed to CFD results by Kang and Kang(2006).

In this study, a blasting nozzle was designed based on incompressible flow analysis to clean wide surface of parts used in power plant. The outlet side section of the designed nozzle has a wide bore with a linear shape. After the design, the nozzle prototype was made by three dimensional printing, and the cleaning performance test was performed after mounting it on the blasting machine. The wide bore size obtained after the analysis was almost the same as the wide bore size obtained from the surface of the plate specimen after the experiment. Ultimately, it was confirmed that the design of blasting nozzle for wide surface treatment is effective.

An intake of Aircraft becomes S-shaped geometry due to spatial limitation or procuring survivability. But curvature of the S-shaped geometry makes secondary flow or flow separation which is the cause of non-uniform pressure distribution. In this study, boundary layer suction is applied to RAE M 2129 S-Duct by attaching sub duct. Design variable is suction location and angle. A mass flow rate drawn out by suction at the sub duct outlet is constant over every model. A grid dependency test was conducted to verify validity of computation. The comparison among the CFD (Computation Fluid Dynamics), ARA experimental result, and ARA computation result of non-dimensional pressure distribution on the Port side and Starboard Side confirmed the validity of CFD. In this study, Distortion Coefficient was used for evaluating aerodynamic performance of S-Duct. The analysis, which was about flow separation, vortex, mass flow rate distribution, and pressure distribution were also investigated. Maximum 26.14% reduction in Distortion Coefficient was verified.
The surface texture produced via surface texturing is an important approach for controlling the tribological behavior of friction behavior of mechanical devices. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of grooves generated via ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) technology on the tribological performance of AISI 4150 steel against stainless steel 316L. In the study, tribological tests are performed under two different regimes, namely mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication, by varying the applied normal load and reciprocating speed during the tests. According to the test results, the friction coefficient decreases as static load (10 N, 30 N, and 50 N) of UNSM technology increases in the mixed lubrication regime. Conversely, the friction coefficient increases as the static load (10 N, 30 N, and 50 N) of UNSM technology increases in the hydrodynamic lubrication regime. Hence, the results indicate that micro-grooves generate hydrodynamic pressure in the outlet, which increases the oil film thickness between the two mating surfaces. This potentially leads to a reduction in friction in the mixed lubrication regime due to the prevention of contact of asperities and debris. However, the results indicate an adverse effect in the hydrodynamic lubrication regime. In this regard, additional experiments should be performed to investigate the effect of grooves generated by UNSM technology at varying conditions on the friction behavior of AISI 4150 steel, which in turn can be controlled by the generated pressure and oil film thickness at the contact interface.

The effect of flow configuration in ammonia-fed solid oxide fuel cell are investigated by using a three-dimensional numerical model. Typical flow configurations including co-flow and counter-flow are considered. The ammonia is directly fed into the stack without any external reforming process, resulting in an internal decomposition of NH3 in the anode electrode of the stack. The result showed that temperature profile in the case of counter-flow is more uniform than the co-flow configuration. The counter-flow cell, the temperature is highest at the middle of the channel while in the case of co-flow, the temperature is continuously increased and reached maximum value at the outlet area. This leads to a higher averaged current density in counter-flow compared to that of co-flow, about 5%.

The collimator is one of the high-heat-flux components used to avoid a series of vacuum and thermal problems. In this paper, the heat load distribution throughout the collimator is first calculated through experimental data, and a transient thermodynamic simulation analysis of the original model is carried out. The error of the pipe outlet temperature between the simulated and experimental values is 1.632%, indicating that the simulation result is reliable. Second, the model is optimized to improve the heat transfer performance of the collimator, including the contact mode between the pipe and the flange, the pipe material and the addition of a twisted tape in the pipe. It is concluded that the convective heat transfer coefficient of the optimized model is increased by 15.381% and the maximum wall temperature is reduced by 16.415%; thus, the heat transfer capacity of the optimized model is effectively improved. Third, to adapt the long-pulse steady-state operation of the experimental advanced superconducting Tokamak (EAST) in the future, steady-state simulations of the original and optimized collimators are carried out. The results show that the maximum temperature of the optimized model is reduced by 37.864% compared with that of the original model. The optimized model was changed as little as possible to obtain a better heat exchange structure on the premise of ensuring the consumption of the same mass flow rate of water so that the collimator can adapt to operational environments with higher heat fluxes and long pulses in the future. These research methods also provide a reference for the future design of components under high-energy and long-pulse operational conditions.
