  • Background: To implement medication management service in Korean nursing home (NH), medication review tool for residents in Korean long-term care facilities was developed. This prospective pilot study aimed to verify the applicability of this newly developed tool and to evaluate the drug related problems (DRPs) identified by pharmacists' medication review in NH setting. Methods: This study was carried out in two NHs in Korea. The elderly residents (65 or older) using 5 or more medications were eligible. Pharmacists conducted medication review and identified the DRPs and potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) based on the newly developed tool. Results: Among 43 NH residents, 27 residents agreed to participate. The median age was 87 and about 55.6% of them were taking 10 or more medications. Pharmacists identified a total of 37 PIMs in 18 NH residents (66.7%) and 54 DRPs in 22 residents (81.5%). The most frequent PIM was general-PIM (26 cases) followed by PIM under specific diseases or conditions (7 cases). Out of 77 items contained in the tool, 15 items were detected in study participants. 'Continued use or regular daily use of hypnotics' was the most highly detected item (9 cases) followed by 'multiple prescriptions within each class of hypnotics/sedatives' (5 cases). Among 54 DRPs identified, pharmacist intervened 39 cases (72.2%) and interventions were accepted in 18 cases (46.1%). Conclusion: This pilot study demonstrated that newly developed tool is feasible for the nursing home residents. However, further studies with larger population are warranted.

  • The purpose of this stud is : (1) to figure out the amount of time being usually spent on the housework performed by the employed wives and (2) to find out factors influencing the total and the specified housework time. The major findings are the following : 1) A employed wife spends 374 minutes(6.2 hours) on the average a day on the housework. Compared with research results of the past, this shows little difference, and less 157 minutes than full time homeworker. Time connected with meals is 123minutes, clothing (68), management and marketing(64), family care(61), and housing care(58). 2) Family environment variables (the wife's education level, wife's employment status, income, young child's age and presence of employed housekeeper) significantly differentiates the housework time. In general, a wife with higher SES level spends less time for housework except family care. 3) Housework related variables (planning, preference, performance competency, and performance stand rd) significantly differentiate the specified houseworks. High planning, preference, and performance competency do not necessarily diminish the housework time except routine houseworks. High performance standard causes her to spend more time. 4) A wife' sex-role attitudes and a husbands attitudes perceived are more traditional, she spends more time.

  • Objectives: This study aims to contribute to devising systems for family caregivers of dementia patients by examining the state of oral care of dementia patients, and depression and social support among family caregivers of dementia patients. Methods: Family caregivers of dementia patients in the metropolitan area were selected in this study. The inclusion criteria were individuals who have provided care for a dementia patient at home for at least six months and those who come in contact (including phone calls) with the patient at least twice a week. Results: Oral health knowledge of the elderly, caregiving burden, depression, and social support were examined. The mean scores for oral health knowledge of the elderly and caregiving burden were $57.11{\pm}16.94$ out of 100 and $17.33{\pm}8.61$ out of 48, respectively. Further, the mean caregiving behavior score, depression score, and social support score were $8.49{\pm}13.71$ out of 100, $5.11{\pm}3.05$ out of 10, and $72.75{\pm}17.03$ out of 100, respectively. Factors affecting oral health knowledge of the elderly were examined. The results showed that the level of oral health knowledge of the elderly increased with an increasing perception of a need for oral health education (p<0.05), caregiving burden (p<0.01), and social support (p<0.01). Conclusions: These findings suggest that developing and popularizing oral care intervention programs for family caregivers of dementia patients are necessary to ensure systematic oral care for dementia patients.

They force the change of the current social security law because it is impossible to carry out the plans uncer the law. At this point, the conditions of the elderly home in Japan which is geographically close to Korea and has facillicated the elderly home business were examined at the consumer perspectives. • This research, with the participants of the female elderly using a home-visit bath among long-term care services, made an in-depth analysis of what they experience while getting a home-visit bath. We conducted in-depth interviews with 8 elderly people. According to the result, the female elderly experienced the absence of a caregiver, difficulty in carrying out daily life due to physical diseases, getting what they need by themselves, getting comfortable in body and mind, accepting their given situation though feeling shame at getting a bath, and expressing their desires. In addition, they had a close relationship with a care helper. On the basis of the results, a systematic training system which could intensify the professionalism of care helpers was suggested. For the enhancement of the elderly's emotional stability in a long-term care, an integrated case management system was also suggested, which supports the family by organizing an integrated network by region between a long-term care service, home-visit care service, welfare center, and the National Health Insurance Corporation.
