  • Asteroid specimens were collected using fishing nets from the East Sea, Korea. The specimens were identified as Solaster paxillatus Sladen, 1889, belonging to the family Solasteridae of the order Valvatida. This species can be distinguished from three other Korean Solaster species by having 10 arms; subambulacral spines comprising four or five near base of arm, six or seven in middle part, and five or six in distal part of arm; furrow spines comprising four or five near basal part and three or four in distal part of arm; and suboral spines comprising more than ten spinules. The morphological characteristics of this species were described with illustrations. Solaster paxillatus is first reported in marine fauna of Korea.

  • The snapping shrimp Alpheus bisincisus is redescribed on the basis of nine specimens collected in southern Korea. This species is readily distinguished from the other reported species of the Edwardsii group of Alpheus from Korea (A. heeia, A. hoplocheles, A. japonicus, A. lobidens, A. malabaricus, A. pacificus, A. richardsoni, and A. sudara) by having the rostrum and rostral triangle on the carapace flattened dorsally and sharply demarked, and by the presence of overhanging orbitorostral grooves.

  • Testate amoebae are easily recognized as their characteristic shells from other protistan groups. They in which more than 1,900 species have been recorded are mixture of heterogeneous groups mainly composed of Amoebozoa and Cercozoa. In Korea, 74 species of testate amoebae have been recorded since late 1980s. Here I report a list of 12 unrecorded species of testate amoebae from Korea which were discovered during 2016-2018: Arcella crenulata Deflandre, 1928; Centropyxis cassis(Wallich, 1864); C. delicatula Penard, 1902; C. hirsuta Deflander, 1929; C. orbicularis Deflandre, 1929; C. sylvatica (Deflandre, 1929); Cyclopyxis eurystoma Deflandre, 1929; C. intermedia Kufferath, 1932; C. kahli(Deflandre, 1929); Difflugia diafana Vucetich, 1987; D. manicata Penard, 1902; Awerintzewia cyclostoma Schoutenden, 1906. As a result the fauna of testate amoebae in Korea is composed of 86 species. There are still much more species remained to be discovered in Korea. The faunal studies on testate amoebae will provide us valuable information about freshwater and soil environments.

  • The crinoid specimens of the genus Anneissia were collected from Nokdong, Korea Strait, and Moseulpo, Jeju Island. The specimens were identified as Anneissia pinguis (A.H. Clark, 1909), which belongs to the family Comatulidae of the order Comatulida. Anneissia pinguis was first described by A.H. Clark in 1909 around southern Japan. This species can be distinguished from other Anneissia species by a longish and stout cirrus, much fewer arms, and short distal cirrus segments. The morphological features of Korean specimens are as follows: large disk (20-35 mm), 28-36 segments and 32-43 mm length cirrus, division series in all 4 (3+4), very stout and strong distal pinnule with 18-19 comb and 40 arms. In Korea fauna, only three species of genus Anneissia were recorded: A. intermedia, A. japonica, and A. solaster. In this study, we provide the morphological description and phylogenetic analysis based on cytochrome c oxidase subunit I.

  • Previous surveys on Ulleung-do (Dagelet Isl.) found just ten earthworm taxa while the current survey unearthed a dozen species. Placement of parthenogenetic 'tube' Amynthas dageletensis Hong & Kim, 2005 is resolved as it clearly belongs in synonymy of Metaphire soulensis (Kobayashi, 1938) which becomes a new Ulleung-do record. Other new megascolecids are recorded since Amynthas heteropodus (Goto & Hatai, 1898) and A. baemsagolensis Hong & James, 2001 are confirmed as synonyms of A. corticis (Kinberg, 1867) and A. carnosus (Goto & Hatai, 1899), respectively. The latter taxon is differentiated and its synonym A. pingi (Stephenson, 1925) provisionally revived. New lumbricids are Bimastos parvus (Eisen, 1874), Eisenia japonica (Michaelsen, 1892) and questionably Dendrodrilus rubidus (Savigny, 1826). All confirmed species are common exotics with no endemics. Drawida moniligastrids were not yet located on this remote island for reasons unknown.

  • This study intended to record a species of feather mite, Neopteronyssus bilineatus Mironov, 2003, (Arachnida: Pteronyssidae), from a grey-capped pygmy woodpecker, Yungipicus canicapillus (Blyth, 1845), in the Republic of Korea. Mite samples were collected from the flight feathers of a woodpecker, preserved directly in 95% ethyl alcohol, and then observed by a light microscope after specimen preparation. Morphology of Neopteronyssus bilineatus is distinguished from other pici group species by opisthosoma part with 2 longitudinal bends, tarsal seta rIII 3 times longer than tarsus III in males, and 2 elongated hysteronotal plates extending beyond the level of setae e2 in females. In the present study, a species of feather mite, N. bilineatus, was newly recorded from Y. canicapillus in Korean fauna.

  • Henricia specimens were collected using fishing nets from 14 November 2012 to 8 June 2018 from the East Sea of Korea. The specimens were identified as Henricia sanguinolenta (O.F. $M{\ddot{u}}ller$, 1776), belonging to the family Echinasteridae of the order Spinulosida, which is known for its wide distribution throughout the world. This species can be distinguished from other Henricia species by long arms (R/r=6-6.8), thick arm base, coarser stubby abactinal spines with more than ten apical points, and visible longitudinal series of actinal ossicles. Previously, eight species of the genus Henricia were reported in the Korean fauna. The morphological characteristics of this species were prepared and described with illustrations.

  • Members of this family Sciomyzidae are known as marsh flies and snail-killing flies because most of the known larvae are obligate predators of Mollusca, especially freshwater and terrestrial Gastropoda. Most species are found in the shallow ephemeral aquatic habitats with rich organic substrates, such as the hard-water streams, small ponds and lakes in mountain valleys. To date, a total of 8 marsh fly species in 4 genera have been known in Korea. During a taxonomic survey of the family Sciomyzidae in Korea, the authors have found the genus Ditaeniella Sack, 1939; thus, it was discovered for the first time in Korea. This genus can be distinguished by the other related taxa with hairs over much of the mesopleuri, hairs on the prosternum and one orbital seta. In addition, the nominate species, Ditaeniella grisescens Meigen, 1830 was also firstly recoded in the Korean fauna.
