Formation of oil-in-water nano-emulsions has been studied in oil/hydrogenated lecithin/water systems by two shear different instrument. The influence of surfactant concentration on nano-emulsion droplet size and stability has been studied. Droplet size was determined by dynamic light scattering, and nano-emulsion stability was evaluated by measuring the variation of droplet size as a function of time. The results obtained showed that the breakdown process of nano-emulsions studied could be attributed to Ostwald ripening. An increase of nano-emulsion instability with increase in surfactant concentration was found in the droplet size in the range of 100~200nm, however, an decrease of instability was found in the droplet size in the range of 300~400nm.

The growth process of solid grains in a liquid matrix is usually explained in tem1S of Ostwald ripening. The variation of growth (dissolution) rate as a function of grain size during Ostwald ripening predicted that the dissolution rate becomes very large as grain size decreases but the growth rate of a large grain is rather limited. Therefore. a rather uniform size distribution of grain size is maintained once after the quasi-equilibrium state is reached. Quite frequently, however, the exaggerated grain growth (EGG) is observed to occur: only a limited number of grains grow exceptionally. From the observation that the EGG occurs only for the faceted grains with apparently straight solid-liquid interfaces, the EGG is suggested to be the consequence of growth process controlled by 2-dimensional nucleation. In this study, the result by computer calculation on the grain growth process controlled by various mechanisms will be given.

To verify the quality of bubbles during the use of quartz glass crucibles (QC), an appropriate accelerated testing method was proposed. The bubble state of discarded waste crucibles obtained from actual Czochralski (Cz) processes was analyzed, and optimal heat treatment conditions were suggested by varying temperature, pressure, and time using the QC test piece. By subjecting the samples to heat treatment at 1450℃, 0.4 Torr, and 40 hours, it was possible to control the bubble size and density to a similar level as those generated in the actual Cz process. In particular, by selecting a relatively lower pressure of 0.4 Torr compared to the typical range of 10~20 Torr applied in the Cz process, the time required for accelerated bubble formation testing could be reduced. However, it was determined that increasing the heat treatment temperature to 1550℃ led to the phenomenon of Ostwald ripening, resulting in larger bubbles and a rapid decrease in density. Therefore, it was concluded that it was not a suitable condition for the desired b ake test.

The objective of this study was to find out the stable formulation of nano-emulsion containing high concentration of quercetin and to investigate the effect of an ethanol on the nano-emulsion prepared by POE (30) hydrogenated castor oil (HCO-30)/oil/quercetin/ethanol/water system. Nano-emulsion was prepared using emulsion inversion point (EIP) method as low-energy method plus homogenizer as high-energy method. To evaluate effect of ethanol and other components on the nano-emulsion, physical properties such as droplet size, morphology, and size distribution were determined. The optimal quercetin concentration was 0.2 % on the nano-emulsion. The droplet diameter was below 300 nm at the HCO-30 concentration below 2.00 %. Nano-emmulsion containing 4.75 % HCO-30 was the most stable and its mean droplet size was 172.40 nm. Finally, the size of nano-emulsion containing 4.00 % ethanol was 128.15 nm and size distribution was also narrow. The results showed that the breakdown process of this nano-emulsion could be attributed to Ostwald ripening. This study about effect of ethanol on the nano-emulsion showed that loading capacity of drug could be increased by using a small amount of ethanol. As prepared stable nano-emulsion, this study showed that these results could be applied to pharmaceutics, cosmetic including skin-care products, perfume and etc.
The TiC-Co/Al reaction-sintered products were prepared by the infiltration of various Co/Al metal mixture into the preform, and their microstructure, phases, and mechanical properties were investigated. With increasing the atomic ratio of Co/Al, tiC grain shape was changed from spherical to platelet particles, and the grain size increased. The crystalline phases found in the liquid matrix formed by the infiltration of Co/Al metal mixture were determined to be Al5Co2 and AlCo by EDS and XRD, and the two crystalline phases were located dominantly between TiC grains, when the Co/Al atomic ratio was lower than an unity. There was a tendency that the density, bending strength and fracture toughness increase with Co/Al atomic ratio until the infiltrated metal was 100% Co. The maximum value was achieved by the composition containing 100% Co infiltrated metal. The Vickers hardness decreased as Co/Al atomic ratio increased.

The microstructure of polymer membranes produced via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) of polymer solutions is a strong function of both the early-stage (by spinodal decomposition or nucleation & growth) and the late-stage phase separation (referred to in general as coarsening). In the case of early stage effects, the membrane morphology resulting from a nucleation & growth mechanism is either a poorly interconnecsed, stringy, beady structure which is mechanically fragile or a well interconnected structure with highly nonuniform pore sizes. In contrast, spinodal decomposition results in a well interconnected, mechanically strong membrane with highly uniform pore sizes. Here I describe recent quantitative studies of the coarsening effects on the microstructure of membranes produced via TIPS process. The dependence of microstructure on coarsening time, quench depth, solution viscosity, and polymer molecular weight was investigated in order to distinguish among three possible coarsening mechanisms, Ostwald ripening, coalescence, and hydrodynamic flow, which may be responsible for structural evolution after the early-stage phase Separation (spinodal decomposition or nucleation & growth).
The knowledge of grain growth of carbide particles is very important for manufacturing micrograined cemented carbides. In the present study, continuous and discontinuous grain growth in WC-Co and WC-VC-Co cemented carbides is investigated using the Monte Carlo computer simulation technique. The Ostwald ripening process (solution/re-precipitation) and the grain boundary migration process are assumed in the simulation as the grain growth mechanism. The effects of liquid phase fraction, grain boundary energy and implanted coarse grain are examined. At higher liquid phase content, mass transfer via solid/liquid interfaces plays a major role in grain growth. Growth rate of the implanted grain was higher than that of the matrix grains through solution/re-precipitation and coalescence with neighboring grains. The results of these simulations qualitatively agree with experimental ones and suggest that distribution of liquid phase and carbide particle/carbide grain boundary energy as well as contamination by coarse grain are important factors controlling discontinuous grain growth in WC-Co and WC-VC-Co cemented carbides. The contamination by coarse grains must by avoided in the manufacturing process of fine grain cemented carbides, especially with low Co.
A facile one-pot wet chemical process to prepare pure anatase TiO2 hollow structures using ammonium hexafluorotitanate as a precursor is developed. By defining the formic acid ratio, we fabricate TiO2 hollow structures containing fluorine on the surface. The TiO2 hollow sphere is composed of an anatase phase containing fluorine by various analytical techniques. A possible formation mechanism for the obtained hollow samples by self-transformation and Ostwald ripening is proposed. The TiO2 hollow structures containing fluorine exhibits 1.2 - 2.7 times higher performance than their counterparts in photocatalytic activity. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 hollow structures is attributed to the combined effects of high crystallinity, specific surface area (62 ㎡g-1), and the advantage of surface fluorine ions (at 8%) having strong electron-withdrawing ability of the surface ≡ Ti-F groups reduces the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes.
An understanding of the coarsening process of the large fission gas pores in the high burn-up structure (HBS) of irradiated $UO_2$ fuel is very necessary for analyzing the safety and reliability of fuel rods in a reactor. A numerical model for the description of pore coarsening in the HBS based on the Ostwald ripening mechanism, which has successfully explained the coarsening process of precipitates in solids is developed. In this model, the fission gas atoms are treated as the special precipitates in the irradiated $UO_2$ fuel matrix. The calculated results indicate that the significant pore coarsening and mean pore density decrease in the HBS occur upon surpassing a local burn-up of 100 GWd/tM. The capability of this model is successfully validated against irradiation experiments of $UO_2$ fuel, in which the average pore radius, pore density, and porosity are directly measured as functions of local burn-up. Comparisons with experimental data show that, when the local burn-up exceeds 100 GWd/tM, the calculated results agree well with the measured data.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ethanol on the emulsion prepared by poly(oxyethylene) hydrogenated castor oils (HCOs)/oil/ethanol/water system. Emulsions were prepared using homogenizer as high-energy method. To evaluate effect of ethanol on the emulsion, physical properties such as droplet size and size distribution were determined and other components were almost fixed to analyze the effect of ethanol on the surfactant. In case of HCO-20, the droplet diameter was in micrometers and the droplet size was gradually deceased as the ethanol concentration was increased. The droplet diameter of nano-emulsion containing 4.00 % of HCO-30 was shown in nanometers and its mean droplet size was $128.15{\pm}1.06nm$ and the most stable at the 4.25 % of ethanol contents by the Form. 1 and $136.10{\pm}0.99nm$ at the 3.50 % of ethanol contents by the Form. 2. Similarly, the droplet diameter of nano-emulsion containing 4.00 % of HCO-40 and 4.50 % ethanol by the Form. 1 was $115.85{\pm}0.78nm$ and $121.15{\pm}0.35nm$ at the 3.25 % of ethanol by the Form. 2 and both size distributions were also narrow. Finally, the droplet size of nano-emulsion containing 4.00 % of HCO-60 and 2.25 % ethanol was $262.35{\pm}0.64nm$ and the most stable. The higher ethanol concentrations became the smaller size of emulsion became in the microscale emulsion but we determined nano-emulsion had a minimum size at a certain ethanol concentration. The results showed that the breakdown process of this nano-emulsion could be attributed to Ostwald ripening. This study about effect of ethanol on the emulsion showed that ethanol contents to prepare a stable emulsion could be determined as studying the effect of ethanol on the emulsion with the type of surfactants.
