The knowledge of grain growth of carbide particles is very important for manufacturing micrograined cemented carbides. In the present study, continuous and discontinuous grain growth in WC-Co and WC-VC-Co cemented carbides is investigated using the Monte Carlo computer simulation technique. The Ostwald ripening process (solution/re-precipitation) and the grain boundary migration process are assumed in the simulation as the grain growth mechanism. The effects of liquid phase fraction, grain boundary energy and implanted coarse grain are examined. At higher liquid phase content, mass transfer via solid/liquid interfaces plays a major role in grain growth. Growth rate of the implanted grain was higher than that of the matrix grains through solution/re-precipitation and coalescence with neighboring grains. The results of these simulations qualitatively agree with experimental ones and suggest that distribution of liquid phase and carbide particle/carbide grain boundary energy as well as contamination by coarse grain are important factors controlling discontinuous grain growth in WC-Co and WC-VC-Co cemented carbides. The contamination by coarse grains must by avoided in the manufacturing process of fine grain cemented carbides, especially with low Co.
To date, nanostructured tungsten oxides with a variety of stoichiometries, such as WO3, WO2.9, W18O49, and WO2, have been prepared, because they are promising candidates for applications such as gas sensors, photocatalysts, electrochromic devices, and field emission devices. Among them, W18O49 and WO2 have been widely studied due to their outstanding chemical sensing, catalytic, and electron emissive properties. Here we report, for the first time, a one-pot solution-phase route to synthesizing a novel composite hierarchical hollow structure without adding catalysts, surfactants, or templates. The products, consisting of a WO2 hollow core sphere surrounded by a W18O49 nanorod shell (yielding a sea urchin-like structure), were generated as discrete structures via Ostwald ripening. To our knowledge, this type of composite hierarchical core/shell structure has not been reported previously. The morphological evolution and the detailed growth mechanism were carefully studied. We also demonstrate that the size of the hollow urchins is readily tunable by controlling the reactant concentrations.Interestingly, although bulk tungsten oxides are weakly paramagnetic or diamagnetic, the as-prepared products show unusual ferromagnetic behavior atroom temperature. The urchin structures also show a very high Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) surface area, suggesting that they may potentially be applied to chemical sensor or effective catalyst technologies.
A facile one-pot wet chemical process to prepare pure anatase TiO2 hollow structures using ammonium hexafluorotitanate as a precursor is developed. By defining the formic acid ratio, we fabricate TiO2 hollow structures containing fluorine on the surface. The TiO2 hollow sphere is composed of an anatase phase containing fluorine by various analytical techniques. A possible formation mechanism for the obtained hollow samples by self-transformation and Ostwald ripening is proposed. The TiO2 hollow structures containing fluorine exhibits 1.2 - 2.7 times higher performance than their counterparts in photocatalytic activity. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 hollow structures is attributed to the combined effects of high crystallinity, specific surface area (62 ㎡g-1), and the advantage of surface fluorine ions (at 8%) having strong electron-withdrawing ability of the surface ≡ Ti-F groups reduces the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes.
This is a parameter study for the direct fabrication of a large grain YBCO bulk superconductors using Y2O3, BaCO3 and CuO powders without any grinding step. The cracks, which have been formed due to volume contraction during calcination step, have been prevented by controlling the heating rate at 930~950 ℃. It has been observed that multi-grain growth has occurred due to the dissolution of Sm123 seed due to the retention of carbon in Ba-Cu-O melt. In order to accelerate the carbon release in prior calcination heat treatment, the reduction of pellet thickness and the drilling of artificial holes have been applied. Single-grain YBCO bulk superconductor has been successfully fabricated by stacking multiple thin slab. However, the crack formation has been rather prominent for the compact with artificial holes. The use of buffer pellet, which is supposed to act as diffusion barrier, has prevented the dissolution of Sm123 seed crystal and has led to the growth of single grain of high content of carbon containing specimen.
The thermal stability of duplex high Mn-steel structure have been investigated using 15%Mn~1.0~2.4%C steels which are composed of ${\gamma}$-and ${\theta}$-phases in the range of temperature from 900 to $1100^{\circ}C$, and time from 50 to 300h. The results are as follows ; 1) The grain growth in single-phase region proceeds by grain boundary migration and the relation between mean radius $\bar{r}$ and annealing time t is described as follows ; $\bar{r}^2-{\bar{r}_0}^2=k_0{\cdot}t$ 2) The grain growth of duplex, (${\gamma}+{\theta}$), strucrure is slower than that single phase because the chemical composition of ${\gamma}$-and ${\theta}$-phases differs esch others. 3) The grain of (${\gamma}+{\theta}$) duplex structure grow slowly in a mode of Ostwald ripening. Because grain boundaries of ${\gamma}$-phase migrate under a restriction of pinning by ${\theta}$-phases. 4) In the duplex structures. the dispersed structures change to the dual-structures, as the volume fraction of the dispersed second-phase increase. Consequently, the growth-law, which is controlled by boundary-diffusion change to that of the volume diffusion-mechanism.
The microstructural changes during semi-solid state processing of hypereutectic Al-Si alloy has been investigated in the present study. Stirring of semi-solid slurry results in the morphological changes of the primary Si particles, i.e. from angular rod shape to near-spherical shape. Besides the spherodization of primary Si particles, the average particle size increases, especially, at much higher rate in the final stage than that in the early stage of stirring. Various microstructure characterization techniques, such as anisotropic etching, SEM imaging and ECP analysis, reveal that the spherodization of primary Si particles occurs by the combinations of the mechanisms of coalescence, fracture, and wear of the individual particles. Isothermal shearing of hypereutectic Al-Si at $580^{\circ}C$ shows that spherical ${\alpha}-Al$ particles are formed by the dissociation of Al-Si eutectic structure at the early stage of isothermal shearing. The spherical ${\alpha}-Al$ particles gradually grow by the mechanisms of Ostwald ripening and coalescence of the particles.
An understanding of the coarsening process of the large fission gas pores in the high burn-up structure (HBS) of irradiated $UO_2$ fuel is very necessary for analyzing the safety and reliability of fuel rods in a reactor. A numerical model for the description of pore coarsening in the HBS based on the Ostwald ripening mechanism, which has successfully explained the coarsening process of precipitates in solids is developed. In this model, the fission gas atoms are treated as the special precipitates in the irradiated $UO_2$ fuel matrix. The calculated results indicate that the significant pore coarsening and mean pore density decrease in the HBS occur upon surpassing a local burn-up of 100 GWd/tM. The capability of this model is successfully validated against irradiation experiments of $UO_2$ fuel, in which the average pore radius, pore density, and porosity are directly measured as functions of local burn-up. Comparisons with experimental data show that, when the local burn-up exceeds 100 GWd/tM, the calculated results agree well with the measured data.
Precursor gels with the composition of xZrO2·(100-x)SiO2 systems (x=10, 20 and 30 mol%) were prepared by the sol-gel method. Kinetic parameters, such as activation energy, Avrami's exponent, n, and dimensionality crystal growth value, m, have been simultaneously calculated from the DTA data using Kissinger and Matusita equations. The crystallite size dependence of tetragonal to monoclinic transformation of ZrO2 was investigated using XRD, in relation to the fracture toughness. The crystallization of tetragonal ZrO2 occurred through 3-dimensional diffusiion controlled growth(n=m=2) and the activation energy for crystallization was calculated using Kissinger and Matusita equations, as about 310∼325±10kJ/mol. The growth of t-ZrO2, in proportion to the cube of radius, increased with increasing heating temperature and hteat-treatment time. It was suggested that the diffusion of Zr4+ ions by Ostwald ripening was rate-limiting process for thegrowth of t-ZrO2 crystallite size. The fracture toughness of xZrO2·(100-x)SiO2 systems glass ceramics increased with increasing crystallite size of t-ZrO2. The fracture toughness of 30ZrO2·70SiO2 system glass ceramics heated at 1,100℃ for 5h was 4.84 MPam1/2 at a critical crystaliite size of 40 nm.
The effect of various alloying elements and melt treatment on the microstructural control of Al-Sn metallic bearing alloy was investigated. The thickness of tin film crystallized around primary aluminum decreased with the addition of 5% Cu in Al-Sn alloy, with tin particles being reduced in size by intervening the Ostwald ripening. With the addition of Si in Al-10%Sn alloy, the tin particles were crystallized with eutectic silicon, resulting in uniform distribution of tin particles. With the addition of Cu and Si in Al-Sn alloy, both the tensile strength and yield strength increased, with the increasing rate of yield strength being less than that of tensile strength. Although the Al-10%Sn-7%Si alloy has similar tensile strength compared with Al-10%Sn-5%Cu, the former showed superior abrasion resistance, resulting from preventing the tin particles from movement to the abrasion surface.
