The present study explored the way to desalinate seawater for agricultural irrigation using forward osmosis (FO) process using liquid fertilizer as draw solution. FO experiments were performed in a cross flow mode using flat sheet FO membrane. The effect of membrane orientation, flow rate, and draw solution concentration on the performance of forward osmosis was investigated by measuring water flux of forward osmosis membrane. The water flux when the draw solution was placed against the membrane active layer was lower than the water flux when the feed solution was placed against the membrane active layer. This results indicated that the decrease of effective osmotic pressure by dilutive internal concentration polarization was less than that by concentrative internal concentration polarization. Increasing flow rate from 66.7 to 133.1 $cm^3$/min resulted in increase of the water flux when the membrane active layer orient to draw solution and feed solution, respectively. The reduction of resistance to water flow increased water flux at higher flow rate. The water flux of FO membrane increased with increasing draw solution concentration from 10000 to 30000 mg/L. The water flux for $KH_2PO_4$ draw solution was similar to that for commercial fertilizer. Optimization of FO process would contribute to economically desalinate brackish water for agricultural use.
Counter-current type reverse osmosis spiral wound module was manufactured for the separation and concentration of salf solution. The ratio of permeate volumetric flow rate vs. brine volumetric flow rate was effective parameter between rejection and degree of cocentration. The reflection coefficient was correspondent to the relation between rejection and degree of cocentration by Spiegler-Kedem model. Counter-current reverse osmosis process had more osmotic pressure drop effect and more degree of concentration than general reverse osmosis process. As a result of computer calculation, the extension of module length than module diameter was more effective for the increase of degree of concentration.
The effects of salicylic acid(SA) and water deficit on growth and proline accumulation were investigated in cucumber(Cucurmis sativus L.) seedlings. Exogenous application of SA(100 $\mu$M-1 mM) led to a noticeable decrease in root and shoot growth, and dry weight of seedlings. Anatomical observation on leaf of cucumber revealed that the thickness of all leaf tissue components decreased in SA-treated plants. The effect was most pronounced on the width of the adaxial epidermis. In the separate effects of SA(0, 100, 500 and 1000 $\mu$M) and water deficit induced by PEG(0, 4.4, 7.0 and 9.6 %) on growth, the water deficit treatments had greater effects on growth traits than SA. Combinations of SA and PEG(SA+PEG) decreased shoot and root dry matter, and root length. Proline increased slightly in SA-treated seedlings, but exhibited a marked increase in water deficit application. Combinations of SA+PEG induced higher proline in both shoots and roots than SA stress alone. Shoots had higher proline than roots. Our data support a role of SA potentiating the osmotic stress response of germinating cucumber seedling.
The effects of a high level of sucrose on the moisture content, water activity, protein denaturation and sensory properties in Chinese-style pork jerky were investigated. The pork jerky with different levels (0, 12, 15, 18 and 21%) of sucrose was prepared. Fifteen frozen boneless pork legs from different animals were used in this trial. Sucrose is a non-reducing disaccharides and would not undergo non-enzymatic browning. Some studies pointed out that sucrose might be hydrolyzed during freezing, dehydration and storage into glucose and fructose, and cause non-enzymatic browning in meat products. The results showed that moisture content and water activity of pork jerky decreased with increase of the level of sucrose. At the same time, shear value was increased due to the reduced moisture content and water activity by osmotic dehydration. However, a higher level of sucrose had a significantly negative effect on protein solubility and extractability of myosin heavy chain of pork jerky due to non-enzymatic browning. From the results of sensory panel tests, the pork jerky with 21% of sucrose seems to be more acceptable by the panelists in hardness, sweetness and overall acceptability.

Charged polymer chains, i.e., polyelectrolytes, are known to show superior aqueous lubricating properties compared to those of neutral polymer chains, especially in brush conformation. This is primarily because of the incorporation of a large amount of counterions within the polymer layers and the consequently increased osmotic pressure. However, this effect is active only when the polymer chains remain immobilized even under tribostress, which is not realistic for high-contact pressure tribological applications, especially when they are irreversibly immobilized on tribopair surfaces. In contrast, with free polymers, which can be included as surface-active additives in the base lubricant (water), long-term lubricating performance based on "self-healing" properties is readily expected. In order to assess whether the superior aqueous lubricating properties of polyelectrolyte chains are valid for free polymers too, this study reviews recent studies on the tribological properties of many charged biopolymer and synthetic copolymers at a nonpolar, hydrophobic interface. In contrast to the irreversibly immobilized polyelectrolyte chains, free polyelectrolyte chains show inferior aqueous lubricating properties compared to their neutral counterparts owing to charge accumulation and the consequently impeded surface adsorption on the nonpolar surface. Nevertheless, bovine submaxillary mucin (BSM), a representative biopolymer, shows a sufficiently effective surface adsorption and aqueous lubricating capabilities even at neutral pH without losing the polyanionic characteristics.
As an essential previous step towards the development of cell fusion to breed a new brewing yearst strain, several factors predicted to affect the protoplast formation of S. cerevisiae, C. tropicalis and E. fibuligera were investigated in order to obtain the protoplasts in high yields. The optimum pH and temperature for the protoplas formation were 7.5 and 35$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Pretreatment of the yeast cells with 2-mercaptoethanol stimulated the protoplast formation and 50mM of the reagent was found as effective. Among several osmotic stabilizers tested for their effect on protoplas formation, 0.6M KCI was comparatively favorable.
Five buffaloes kept in normal ambient temperature ($30^{\circ}C$) showed no significant changes in the heart rate, respiratory rate, packed cell volume, plasma constituents and renal hemodymics during intravenous infusion of urea for 4 h. The rate of urine flow, fractional urea excretion, urinary potassium excretion and osmolar clearance significantly decreased while the renal urea reabsorption markedly increased during urea infusion. The decrease of fractional potassium excretion was concomitant with the reduction of the rate of urine flow and urine pH. In animals exposed to heat ($40^{\circ}C$) the rectal temperature heart rate and respiratory rate significantly increased while no significant changes in GFR and ERPF were observed. An intravenous infusion of urea in heat exposed animals caused the reduction of the rate of urine flow with no changes in renal urea reabsorption, urine pH and fractional electrolyte excretions. During heat exposure, there were marked increases in concentrations of total plasma protein and plasma creatinine whereas plasma inorganic phosphorus concentration significantly decreased. It is concluded that an increase in renal urea reabsorption during urea infusion in buffaloes kept in normal ambient temperature depends on the rate of urine flow which affect by an osmotic diuretic effect of electrolytes. The limitation of renal urea reabsorption in heat stressed animals would be attributed to an increases in either plasma pool size of nitrogenous substance or body metabolism.
To determine the factors which affect the flow of dentinal fluid through cat dentinal tubules in vivo, the flow of fluid was measured by observing the movement of the fat droplets of dilute milk in a glass capillary with a microscope connected to the monitor. After measuring the exposed area of dentin, hydraulic conductances of dentin were calculated. The mean pressure which stoped the outward flow of dentinal fluid was 9.5mmHg. The hydraulic conductance of dentin under the condition of pulp exposed was increased by 21 % from that under the condition of dentin exposed. Under the conditions of pulp cut and pulp removed, the hydraulic conductances of dentin were increased by 22 % and 31 % respectively from that under the condition of dentin exposed. These results show that the direction and rate of dentinal fluid flow in cat dentin is affected mainly by the hydrostatic pressure of interstitial fluid of pulp tissue in the state of low compliance. Both of the osmotic effect produced by the protein constituents of interstitial fluid across the odontoblast tell layer and the change of interstitial fluid pressure produced by the state of the microcirculation of the pulp also affect the direction and rate of dentinal fluid in some degree.

TBP (TATA-binding protein)-related factor 2 (TRF2) regulates transcription during a nuber of cellular processes. We previously demonstrated that it is localized in the cytoplasm and is translocated to the nucleus by DNA-damaging agents. However, the cytoplasmic localization of TRF2 is controversial. In this study, we reconfirmed its cytoplasmic localization in various ways and examined its nuclear migration. Stresses such as heat shock, redox agents, heavy metals, and osmotic shock did not affect localization whereas genotoxins such as methyl methanesulfonate (MMS), cisplatin, etoposide, and hydroxyurea caused it to migrate to the nucleus. Adriamycin, mitomycin C and ${\gamma}$-rays had no obvious effect. We determined optimal conditions for the nuclear migration. The proportions of cells with nuclei enriched for TRF2 were 25-60% and 5-10% for stressed cells and control cells, respectively. Nuclear translocation was observed after 1 h, 4 h and 12 h for cisplatin, etoposide and MMS and hydroxyurea, respectively. The association of TRF2 with the chromatin and promoter region of the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) gene, a putative target of TRF2, was increased by MMS treatment. Thus TRF2 may be involved in genotoxin-induced transcriptional regulation.

There has been increasing global interest in the environmental pollution problems produced by fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. In order to tackle these issues, new renewable energy such as solar, wind, bio gas, fuel cell and pressure retarded osmosis(PRO) have been developed extensively. Among these energy sources, PRO is one of the salinity gradient power generation methods. In PRO, energy is obtained by the osmotic pressure generated from the concentration difference between high and low concentration solutions separated by a semipermeable membrane. The development for high power density PRO membranes is imperative with the purpose of commercialization. This study investigates development of thin film composite PRO membrane and spiral wound module for high power density. Also, the influence of membrane backing layer on power density was identified, and the characteristic factors of PRO membranes was determined. Different backing layers were used to improve power density. As expected, the PRO membrane with more porous backing layer showed higher power density.
