  • The objective of the study is to investigate the influence of aesthetic attributes on user interface design. Theories of aesthetics are first studied from which aesthetic attributes are defined as information sources. Representation of a product is viewed as a combination of aesthetic attributes, based on a hypothesis that each attribute has a certain influence on the performance in terms of user interface. An experiment was conducted to support the hypothesis. Various combinations of aesthetic attributes of a microwave oven were generated from the orthogonal array of a conjoint analysis. Subjects perfomed on a computer two types of tasks, each of which simulated a combination of attributes. Reaction time was evaluated as a performance measure for the conjoint analysis to find out how much influence each attribute has on the performance. A computer program, UISA(User interface Simulation system of Aesthetic attributes0, was developed and used for simulation. Findings on the influences of aesthetic attributes were summarized.

  • This experiment was designed to analyze the factors, which are very common in practical sewing, affecting on sewing shrinkage by using orthogonal array ($L_{27}$) table. The results were analyzed by using the computer program, PDP 11/10. The results showed that sewing shrinkage was increased up to 3 times of laundrying but no further changes could be found. Sewing shrinkage was affected much by the number of stitching and yarn tension and the rate increased with proportion to the number of stitching in unit length and yarn tension. When cotton yarn was used in P/C fabrics, the shrinkage was much smaller, but this results did not agree with other articles reported. Sewing by using $\sharp$11 needle and 1000$\~$1500r.p.m. seemed to lower the shrinkage rate.

  • Steel bar breaking system is a component of a sled test system for automobile crashworthiness. It is a recent idea for the sled test. In a sled test, a crash pulse is given as a input made from a real test. The steel bar breaking system is designed to generate a certain crash pulse. Orthogonal arrays from design of experiments (DOE) are employed. The factors of the array are panel thickness and the number of steel bars, and the levels are candidate values of them. A simulation is utilized for the crash analysis. A commercial system called LS/DYNA3D is adopted. A test system is designed based on the results.

  • A mathematical model is presented for predicting the steady state two-demensional distribution of solute concentration in the meandering nonuniform natural channel. The dispersion equation derived herein employs the transverse cumulative discharge as an independent variable replacing the transverse distance and that it is developed in an orthogonal curvilinear coordinnate system which follows the flow direction of natural channel. The prediction from the results of numerical model are compared with laboratory experiment data. It is found that results from simulation and experiments are in good agreement.

  • This study investigated the effects of spray parameters on wear behavior of the Ni-based hard coatings fabricated by thermal spray process. The experiment was designed by an orthogonal array, the Ni-based hard coatings were fabricated according to this experimental design. The wear test was performed on these coatings using ball-on-disk wear tester. The ANOVA was used to analyze the effects of spray parameters on the wear rate of these coatings, as a result, oxygen gas flow and acetylene gas flow were determined as main factors effected on the wear rate. The effects of these two factors on wear behavior were observed by using SEM and EDX.

  • A Taguchi methodology study of the plasma spraying thermal barrier coating (TBC) layer is presented. The experiment parameters were designed by a L8-style orthogonal arrays approach. A Taguchi analysis was conduc-ted through the results of the coating properties which were affected by plasma spraying parameters. Zirconia (partially stbilized with ytrria: PSZ) was sprayed on TiAl intermetallic compound substrates, The coating layer was characterized by thickness microstructure and porosity using SEM and Image analyzer. The coating quali-ties are discussed with respect to thermal barrier effect thermal cycling test6 and adhesion strength test. An optimum condition of plasma spraying process which are derived from the Taguchi analysis could be found for high quality TBC.

  • Hard Tin coating on tool steel substrate were prepared using the pulsed PACVE. An orthogonal experimental design was employed to find the best deposition conditions for TiN coating and to systematically understand the effect of processing parameters. The small size Taguchi matrix called the L16 was used for experiment and ANOVA(ANalysis of VAriance) was followed to study the effect of main parameters on hardness and adhesion TiN coatings. In conclusion, pulse on/off time ratio and pulsing frequency were the major deposition parameters to determine hardness and adhesion of TiN coating in the pulsed DC PACVE process. (200) preferred orientation, columnar growth and dome-shaped surface morphology of the TiN films gave rise to a high hardness and a good adhesion to the substrates.

  • The numerical procedure has been developed for simulating incompressible viscous flow around a turbine stage with rotor-stator interaction. This study solves 2-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. The Marker-and-Cell concept is applied to efficiently solve continuity equation. To impose an accurate boundary condition, O-H multiblocked grid system is generated. O-type grid and H-type grid is generated near and outer rotor-stator The cubic-spline interpolation is applied to handle a relative motion of a rotor to the stator. Turbulent flows have been modeled by the Baldwin- Lomax turbulent model. To validate present procedure, the time averaged pressure coefficients around the rotor and stator are compared with experiment and a good agreement obtained.

  • The butterfly valve has been used to control the switch and flux of fluid. While research about the characteristics of butterfly valve fluid have been done, study of the optimum design, considering structural safety, must keep pace with it. Thus, a method is proposed for an optimum butterfly valve. Initially, the stability of the butterfly valve, using FEM and CFD, is evaluated, and a variable is selected using the initial analysis results. Also, the shape optimization design is accomplished using the DACE model. In terms of research results, the experiment satisfied the objective and limitation functions.

  • Recently, miniaturization and weight reduction is getting more attention due to various benefits in automotive components design. It is a trend that the design of experiment(DOE) and statical design method are frequently used for optimization. In this research, the safety of lower control arm is evaluated according to its material change form S45C to A16061 for the reduction of arm's weight. The variance analysis on the basis of structure analysis and DOE is applied to the lower control m. We have proposed a statistical design model to evaluate the effect of structural modification by performing the practical multi-objective optimization considering mass, stress and deflection.
