  • By redefining the concept of history, my colleagues and I have reformed our department in terms of curriculum and faculty members. This paper is a report of some of the conclusions that we have obtained from this procedure. Despite a long relationship, two disciplines do not seem to match or complement each other in the Korean education system. We believe that this is due to the fact that the Department of Korean History has focused on "national history (NH)." By conferring a privilege on NH, persons, families, societies, regions, and others were removed from NH. To make matters worse, a biased view that history is just an interpretation has prevailed, and the empiricism of history was weakened, which brought about an indifference in keeping records and archives. In East Asia, "history" means both modern history and archives. The concern about the authenticity of records did not come from H. Jenkinson or L. Duranti, and not even from the electronic environment or the Public Records Act of 1998. Key concepts such as records, documents-archives, manuscripts, authenticity, compilation-appraisal, arrangement, and description are different from their signifiant but are same or similar to their $signifi{\acute{e}}$. In case of "provenance" and "original order," they are used in education and practice in the traditional archives. History includes the recording, archiving, and the story or historiography of an event. In this context, the Department of Korean History should contain a more archives-oriented curriculum and select an archival-trained faculty. On the other hand, the department has accumulated long-term experience with appraisal and description of records; thus, archival science should absorb the criticism of the material. History will be shaken without the help of archives, while archives will lose their root without history. We are at the point in which we need to be reminded why we want to be a historian or an archivist, and for this, the more colleagues, the better.

  • Insurance medicine has been known to medical risk selection. The role of insurance medicine is sound maintenance of insurance system. So it's function is medical underwriting of life risks. However, emerging market has insufficient medical epidemiological research that is necessary for estimation of extra-risk and such market is usually lack of full understanding of life insurance among insurance customers. This problem makes difficult of performing the medical underwriting, as an original insurance medicine. Medical contributions at the stage of claims adjudication comparing the coverage provided in the product, with the information provided in the claims, based on medical records and the agreement between them. This is called medical verification. The insurance doctors can also use their medical knowledge to help the claims staff with informing claimants about the medical basis of claims decisions.

  • In this paper, seismic performance of Kozyatagi Bridge is evaluated by employing nonlinear elasto-plastic dynamic analysis and the deformation-based performance. The time-history records of the 1999 Izmit, 1971 San Fernando and 1989 Loma Prieta earthquakes are modified by adopting a probability of exceedance of 2% in 50 years corresponding to the return period of 2475 years. The analysis is carried out for three different bearing cases which are movable bearings, restrained bearings, and movable bearings with viscous fluid dampers in the radial direction. The analysis results show that the bridge can be retrofitted with viscous fluid dampers. In this case the reinforced concrete piers need not be strengthened by any jacketing techniques in order to preserve the original architectural appearance of the bridge. The retrofitting design of the bridge with viscous fluid dampers is also presented in detail.

  • Records of 15 patients who underwent operation for constrictive pericarditis at this department from 1976 through 1984 were reviewed. All had hemodynamically significant pericardial constriction preoperatively, and pericardial disease was confirmed at operation. There were 12 males and 3 females in this series. Range of age varied from 7 years to 51 years. Clinical and histological study revealed granulomatous pericarditis compatible with the diagnosis of tuberculosis in 5 patients, non-specific chronic inflammatory changes in 6 patients and pyogenic pericarditis in 2 patients. Pericardiectomy was performed through a median sternotomy [11 cases] or bilateral anterior thoracotomy [4 cases]. The postoperative complications were observed in 4 patients. Low cardiac output was the most common complication [2 patients]. In 13 cases, excluding 2 operative deaths, preoperatively all were in New York Heart Association Class III or IV. At the time of discharge II [85%] were in Class I or II. 4 Cases were reoperated after original pericardiostomy and all resulted in marked improvement. Early surgical intervention is advisable in all patients in whom cardiac constriction is caused by either a thickened pericardium or a pericardial effusion before myocardial dysfunction occurs.

  • The bivalve molluscan fauna of Ulsan Bay, East Sea coast of Korea, is summarized, based on original and literature data. The fauna consists of 61 species belonging to 20 families. Seven species are identified only to genus level. Two species (Carditellopsis toneana (Yokoyama, 1922), Carditidae and Fulvia hungerfordi (G.B. Sowerby III, 1901), Cardiidae) are new records for the East Sea coast of Korea, and one species (Crenella decussata (Montagu, 1808), Mytilidae) is a new record for Korea. Biogeographically, Ulsan Bay's bivalve fauna is subtropical with a predominance of tropical-subtropical species, 21 species, or 39% of the total species number, subtropical, 14 species, or 26%, and subtropical-boreal (mostly subtropical-lowboreal), 11 species, 21%, totalling 86%. A remarkable feature of the Ulsan Bay fauna is the presence of tropical-subtropical species not found in Yeongil Bay but common in tidal flats and shallow waters of the Yellow Sea and the southern part of Korea. A cold water mass appearing off the southeast coast of Korea near Ulsan in summer seems responsible for the presence of boreal-arctic species in this area.

  • This study investigated the photochromic properties and characterization of acetyl-substituted diarylethene (DAMBTF6)-doped fluoroacrylates media for holographic storage. For the rewritable holographic recording media, we prepared photochromic polymer films using an acrylate matrix by simple photocuring methods. Switching light sources from a visible (532 nm) to an ultraviolet (365 nm) produced transparent films that changed from pale yellow to red. Holographic recording was performed on the photochromic films by two interfering collimated plane wave beams. Excitation with a visible or ultraviolet light completely erased the records, and the film was rewritable either by 532 nm laser or by 325 nm laser within 2 seconds. Images were recorded onto a pixelated spatial light modulator with rectangular pixel apertures and reconstructed on the photochromic films to show recovery of the original images with high resolution.

  • In this paper, embroidery works with a certain date are divided by a category, and they are reviewed in terms of original fabrics, embroidery patterns, the form of an artwork, embroidery techniques, and etc with the aim of the understanding of the Joseon period embroidery. In the second part, I examine the history of Korean embroidery from the Three Kingdoms period to the Joseon dynasty along with the written records and extant embroidery works. The third part, Joseon embroidery revealed by the analysis of the remaining embroidery works, divides Joseon embroidery by two kinds, bridal robe and rank badge as well as an embroidery screen. Through the examination of these extant works, I try to rediscover the historic significance of Joseon embroidery, and also hope to help people to gain an expert opinion on Joseon embroidery.

  • Two newly recorded species belonging to the genus Lamprops, family Lampropidae found in the East Sea (Sea of Japan) of Korea are reported: Lamprops carinatus Hart, 1930 and L. pseudosarsi Tsareva and Vassilenko, 1993. Lamprops carinatus is characterized by having a smooth carapace without oblique ridges and one long and two pairs of terminal unequal setae on the telson. Lamprops pseudosarsi is easily distinguished by having two pairs of oblique ridges on the carapace and one long and two pairs of terminal subequal setae on the telson. The collected specimens were congruent with the original descriptions, except for several minor differences. This is the first record of the genus Lamprops from Korea. Especially, new information on the mouthparts of these species is given, and the male of L. pseudosarsi is described for the first time. Keys are also provided to the Korean genera of the Lampropidae and species of Lamprops.
