  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the spray characteristics of non-circular effervescent twin-fluid nozzles. For this purpose, two types of non-circular nozzles (E1, E2) and circular nozzle (C) were used. Three types of aerorators with hole diameters of 1.2, 1.7 and 2.1 mm were used. Each aerorator has a total of 12 holes. It is defined by area ratio which is ratio of exit orifice area and aerator hole area. Experiments were carried out by controlling the amount of air flowing after fixing the flow rate of the liquid, and the nozzle internal pressure and SMD were measured, and the jet image was taken from the nozzles. The discharge coefficients of the three kinds of nozzles were compared with the used in plain orifice's equation and the Jedelsky's equation, and the Jedelsky's equation was found to be about 3 times larger. In addition, empirical formula based on ALR, which is the largest variable in Jedelsky's equation, was derived. The droplet sizes(SMD) were found to be smaller in the non-circular shape than in the circular shape, which is concluded to be caused by the difference of the discharge coefficients.

  • The objective of this study is to propose two empirical correlations to predict the mass flow rate through an automotive block type thermostatic expansion valve and then to evaluate the correlations. The first correlation is deduced by modifying the basic equation of the orifice meter for the mass flow rate and the second correlation is deduced by using the Buckingham's ${\pi}$ theorem. The first correlation showed very good agreement on the measured data for R134a, given by Monforte. Average relative deviation and standard deviation of it are 2.5% and 1.6%, respectively. The second correlation agreed on the same measured data with a little greater deviations. The two correlations may apply to common expansion valves which have different geometrical sizes of the same shape.

  • In swash plate type axial piston hydraulic pump and motor, the piston shoe is periodically pressurized with square function shape by supply pressure load as rotation of cylinder barrel. Therefore the recess pressure on bottom part of piston shoe is suddenly increase through orifice in the piston shoe. In this study, we simulated that the frequency response of the recess pressure against with change of supply pressure with analysis tool. Also, we evaluate the dynamic response characteristics of overbalanced hydrostatic bearing with change of the orifice diameter.

  • I investigated experomentally the spray characteristics to the operating conditions and the shapes of internal mixing twin fluid atomizer. The wide variations of air per liquid ratio are conducted to predit the influences of the Sauter mean diameter(SMD), spray angle, distribution of drop size, the flowing condition of gas and length, flowing, area of gas and liquid, and diameter, number and place of the orifice. In this experiment, air per liquid raio, mixing chamber length per diameter, orifice diameter, and the flowing area ratio of gas and fluid influences greatly on SMD, spray angle, distribution of drop size and intermittent fluctuation region.

  • Y-jet nozzle has a wide fuel flow rate range and turn-down ratio, thus, it is used in industrial boilers, furnace and agricultural atomizer. However, it has asymmetrical spray characteristics due to the nozzle design factors. Therefore, in this study, asymmetric spraying characteristics of the elliptical Y-jet nozzle was studied by using the lab-scale spray apparatus. As a result, the elliptical Y-jet nozzle had lower gas mass flow rate than circular Y-jet nozzle at same gas pressure, because of bigger shear stress due to the wider inner surface at the elliptical Y-jet nozzle. Larger SMD was measured on the elliptical Y-jet nozzle than the circular Y-jet nozzle. When SMD was measured in the X_Axis direction at the same gas mass flow rate, the elliptical Y-jet nozzle with an aspect ratio of 2:1 showed greater asymmetry than the others.

  • Fuel spray nozzle has a critical effect on combustion characteristics. Mass flow rate and SMD(sauter mean diameter) were selected as design variables by using the experiment data of various types of duplex fuel nozzles for the swirl atomizers. The sensitivity of each design variable on the mass flow rate and SMD was analyzed and the uniformity of mass flow rate was investigated through the shape optimization of duel-orifice-type swirl atomizers. The design variables that have a little effect on the optimum design were excluded using the DOE(design of experiments) method, which enabled the optimization of sensitive design variables on mass flow rate and limit tolerance. The SMD of the research spray nozzle that was used in this study was found to be most similar to that of the calculation results using the Jasuja's SMD relationship. This study showed the specific characteristics of duel orifice type swirl atomizers and the optimization of these kinds of nozzle. This study provided the optimization design of mass flow rate and its allowable tolerance.

  • A new forming technology has been developed to fabricate near-net shape products using light metal. A semi-solid forming technology has some advantages compared with the conventional forming processes such as die casting squeeze casting and hot/cold forging. In this study the numerical analysis of semi-solid filling for a straight die shape and orifice die shape in gate pattern is studied on semi-solid materials(SSM) of solid fraction fs =30% in A356 aluminum alloy. The finite difference program of Navier-Stokes equation coupled with heat transfer and solidification has been developed to predict a filling pattern and the temperature distribution of SSM. The programdeveloped in this study gives die filling patterns of SSM and final solidifica-tion region.

  • Cuticle micromorphology of four families of Korean gymnosperms, Cycadaceae, Ginkgoaceae, Taxaceae, and Cephalotaxaceae, were studied with scanning electron microscopy. The outer and inner features of abaxial and adaxial cuticles were described in details; the absent or present of Florin ring, orifice, trichome, and plug and their shape, the shape and periclinal and anticlinal wall sculpture of epidermal cells, the shape of cuticular flange of epidermal cell, guard cell, and subsidiary cell, the number of stomatal bands and rows, and stomatal apparatus including the shape of polar extension, number of subsidiary cells, the sculpture of guard cell and subsidiary cell. Most of these features have not been sufficiently substantiated by the previous reprots. Furthermore, all the species investigated showed distinctive cuticle morphology with morphological and taxonomical informations.

  • The shape of nozzle cross-section plays an important role in stabilizing electrospray jet. The angle of contact line is governed based on the famous Young-Laplace equation. Compared to a round nozzle that has a constant curvature along the orifice, the square nozzle has four square corner edges and four straight edges that hold the meniscus in a different manner and is of interest in this study. By utilizing both square and round capillary nozzle, we examine the effect of nozzle shape in electrohydrodynamic jetting. The ejections were recorded with a high speed camera and analyzed to examine the jetting repeatability based on dynamic movement of meniscus. The result suggests that if the corner edges are not sharp, then its effect on repeatability is also limited.

  • Typical solid rocket motors have a fixed propellant grain shape and nozzle throat size resulting in a fixed motor thrust. Pintle nozzle has been suggested as a means of providing variable thrust while maintaining the inherent advantage of solid rocket motors. In this study, the pintle shape effect on nozzle performance is investigated using experimental-aided Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). The pintle shape is modified by a principle of monotony. CFD analysis is performed using Fluent by applying the turbulent model. This analysis indicates that nozzle thrust and pintle load are influenced by change of nozzle shock pattern and flow separation due to pintle shape and there exists a high-performing pintle shape.
