  • We have observed the orientation behavior of acicular iron oxides in magnetic layer of the particular magnetic tape after magnetic paint was coated on polyester film. As results of the static orientation, orientation of iron oxides come to the maximum at the front and the back of orientation magnets, but it was a litter lower at the back than at the front, and it slowly decreases and come to the constant level after passing through the orientation magnets. In case of edge portion to be futher away from center in the coated film, the orientation of iron oxides in magnetic layer come to worse than that of the center. We think it is owing to the shape and the magnetic magnitude of orientation magnets. The results of the dynamic orientation are as follows. As the orientation of iron oxides in the particulated magnetic tape is higher, the output properties of tape come to better than ever. And the orientation of iron oxides can be changed by drying condition, as result, the output properties of tape can be also. Therefore we think the considrations of the design of orientation magnets and the control of drying condition are needed to improve output properties of the particulated magnetic tape.

  • The tensile tests for [0/90]s, [90/0]s, and $[0/{\pm}45/90]s$ laminate composite were accomplished with acoustic sensor and failure processes were recorded by a video camera in real time. Also SEM examinations for fracture and side surface were carried out. The purpose of study is estimation of the failure mechanism and the mechanical properties effected by lay-up orientation for CFRP laminate composite with the hole notch. From the results, mechanical properties were obtained and they are similar between two kinds of cross-ply orientation in CFRP laminate composites, but not on $[0/{\pm}45/90]s$. And accordings to increasing the load, accumulate AE count was increased, regardless of lay-up orientation. Futhermore, failure mechanism was described by a video monitoring and SEM.

  • In superconducting power devices including power cables in which high temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes are utilized, a reliable electrical insulation should be achieved for its maximum performance. For an efficient design of HTS superconducting devices, a comparative evaluation of the mechanical and thermal propperties for various insulation materials at cryogenic temperatures is required. Especially, in the process of the property evaluation of the sheet-shaped insulation materials, anisotropy according to the machining direction should be considered because the mechanical and thermal properties are significantly influenced by the sample orientation. In this study, the cryogenic thermal and mechanical properties of various insulation material sheets such as PPLP, Cryoflex, Teflon, and Kapton were determined considering sample orientation. All samples tested at cryogenic temperature showed significantly higher tensile strength as compared with that of room temperature. The ultimate tensile strength at both temperature conditions significantly depended upon the sample orientation. The thermal properties of the insulation materials exhibited a slight difference among samples depending on the orientation: for the PPLP and Cryoflex, the CD orientation showed larger thermal contraction up to 77 K as compared to the MD one. MD samples in PPLP and Cryoflex showed a lower CTE and thermal contraction which made it more promising as an insulation material due to its comparable CTE with HTS CC tapes.

  • Fiber reinforced concrete as a construction material has been widely used. Fibers, as the reinforced component, the physical properties and the distribution influence the engineering properties of the composite. To illustrate the engineering properties, fiber distribution and orientation are necessary. Steel fibers can be easily captured by X-ray, but it is difficult them to express being numerical because they don't show as perfect circular shape on the grinding face. To get the more exact information for this, the numerical method for the orientation and distribution of fibers have to be more elaborately. This paper presents a possible method which makes the calculate for orientation possible.

  • The objective of this paper is to evaluate the material properties of SA106 Gr. C carbon steel and its associated weld manufactured for main steam system of Yonggwang 3,4 nuclear generating stations. A total of 43 tensile and 35 fracture toughness tests were performed and the effects of various parameters such as pipe size, crack plane orientation, test temperature, welding on material properties were discussed. Test results show that the effects of crack plane orientation, test temperature, and welding on fracture toughness were significant while the effects of pipe size, specimen orientation and test temperature on tensile properties were negligible. Especially the dependence of J-R curves on the crack plane orientation appears to be the characteristics of carbon steel.

  • In this study, the effect of Carbon/PEEK composites on the tribological properties has been investigated. Also, its validity has been tested in the capacity of alternative materials of the Ti-based materials used for artificial hip joint. Moreover, this work evaluated the mechanical properties according to the fiber ply orientation, along with the fractured surfaces of the carbon/PEEK composites. The composites with a unidirectional orientation had higher tribological properties than those with a multidirectional orientation. This was caused by the debonding between the carbon fiber and the PEEK, which was proportional to the contact area between the sliding surface and the carbon fiber. The friction test results showed that there were no significant differences in relation to the fiber ply orientation. However, the friction properties of the carbon/PEEK composites were higher than those of the carbon/epoxy composites. In addition, the results showed that a composite that slid in a direction normal to the prepreg lay-up direction had a smaller friction coefficient than one that slid in a direction parallel to the prepreg lay-up direction.

  • An inhomogeneous and anisotropic rock has different properties at different location. Thus, this refers to any of the properties which we may be measuring. There are two concepts of rock mass, namely, CHILE(Continuous, Homogeneous, Isotropic, Linear Elastic) material and DIANE(Discontinuous, Inhomogeneous, Anisotropic, Non-linear Elastic) rock. The former is essentially the properties of intact rock, the latter is essentially the properties governed by the structure of rock. In geotechnical aspect, the most important parameter is strength of rock or rock mass. In particular, characteristics of strength of rock mass depend upon the orientation of discontinuities And this orientation of discontinuities has different properties at different direction of excavation. Therefore, it needs for characterization of different properties of discontinuity orientation against different direction of excavation.

  • This work aims to clarify the character and selection of repair papers, based on fibre orientation information of paper cultural properties under restoration; using nondestructive image analysis applied to micrographs of paper surfaces. Image analysis using fast Fourier transform with suitable modifications was demonstrated to be an effective means to determine angle and intensity of fiber orientation as a nondestructive method. In the case of contemporary repair papers, the Japanese handmade paper exhibited a high anisotropy value, while the Korean handmade papers exhibited low anisotropy values. Korea and Japanese traditional hand making papers were well distinguished. Korea and Japanese papers made in the traditional ways showed its own characteristic orientation behavior in accordance with the motion of a bamboo wire.

  • The effects of an amphiphilic agent and the orientation of BN on the microwave dielectric properties of BN / polyvinyl butyral (PVB) composites were investigated as a function of the BN content in volume fractions from 0.1 to 0.5 ($V_f$). The plate-shaped BN samples were oriented in the PVB matrix by physical processes, in this case tape casting and laminate methods. With an increase in the BN content, the dielectric constant (K) increased because the K of BN was higher than that of the PVB. At the same BN content, composites with an in-plane orientation of the BN showed a higher dielectric constant than that of composites with a transverse orientation of the BN because the ceramics were oriented parallel to the electric field. All of the composites showed nearly constant K values ranging from 1 to 9.4 GHz, indicating good frequency stability over a wide frequency range. At the same frequency, the K values of the composites increased with an increase in the BN content.

  • Structural and magnetic properties of Co-Cr-Mo films were investigated in connection with sputtering conditions. Films were prepared using a convention RF sputtering system. X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were employed to investigate structure properties. Vibrating sample magnetometry was used for coercivity and saturation magnetization measurements. Co-Cr-Mo films displayed reasonable values of perpendicular coercivity and saturation magnetization for perpendicular recording media and showed good perpendicular orientation of the hcp c-axis to the film surface. Perpendicular coercivity was strongly dependent upon substrate technique showed better c-axis orientation than hose using the stationary substrate. Co-Cr-Mo films of 2.9 at. % Mo content showed maximum perpendicular coercivity and saturation magnetization. The films deposited at lower Ar pressure showed good magnetic properties. There was no explicit relationship between the columnar structure and c-axis orientation. Co-Cr-Mo films was found to have suitable structural and magnetic properties for perpendicular recording media.
