  • In oriental medicine, Psychotherapy has been regarded as a part of physical therapy that seemed inseparable from psychological therapy from old times. Oriental Medical Psychotherapies are like following: Ii-Gyeung-Byun-Qi therapy(移精變氣療法), Oh- Ji-Sang-Seung therapy(五志相勝療法), Kyeongja- pyeongji therapy(驚者平之療法), Jieongoron therapy(至言高論療法) and so on. The special feature of these Psychotherapies is the unification of body and mind. For them, various oriental therapies have been under progress. Especially, Many Oriental Medical Psychotherapist insisted that pain of mind evoke pain of body, or vice versa. We observed Oriental Medical Psychotherapies to treat married couple and had a good result. Husband had alcoholism and wife had functional headache. Especially, wife wanted divorce. The problems of divorce and illness in married couple were resolved from Oriental Medical Psychotherapies.

Methods: Korean medicine therapy including MCVT, herb, acupuncture, and psychotherapy are applied to psychologic tremor patients. Vas and AIMS are used as assessment tools to evaluate the effects of therapy. MCVT is a traditional Korean medicine technique usually for chronic diseases. Similarly, autogenic training by J.H.Schultz and Giungoroen-therapy was conducted as psychotherapy. Results: In case 1, the patient lost all symptoms from vas10 to vas0, while in case 2, symptoms of the patient decreased from vas10 to vas3. Additionally, there was a significant decrease in the AIMS measurement score for both patients. Psychotherapy helped to reduce depression and anxiety. • Objectives : We attempt to find out the present situation of a study regarding psychotherapy in Korean medicine through research journals in the JON (The Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry). Methods : We searched and read every JON from 1990 to 2012 and selected articles relating to Psychotherapy. We then analyzed the data and divided them into 3 categories: literature study, case studies and clinical trials. Results : 1) We found 16 literature articles, in which 6 compared Korean psychotherapy with that of the Western, 4 reinterpreted it focusing on traditional cases in Korean psychotherapy, 3 articles were on Qigong, 1 article was on Buddhism and another on Tao, and 1 article was with regards to dreams. 2) There were a total of 26 case reports about Korean psychotherapy. Among them, JiUnGoRoen had the most at 12; somatoform disorder was the most target disease in 9. 3) There were a total of 13 clinical trials on Korean psychotherapy. There were 4 trials on meditation, 6 on Qigong, each 1 of each for EFT, suggestion and autogenic relaxation. Conclusions : In spite of many resources in Korean psychotherapy, it was limited because it was not able to systematize clinically. Hence, we need to hand down and systematize Korean psychotherapy further.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to use in therapy through considering representative oriental philosophical thought in terms of psychotherapy and Oriental medicine. Methods: This study examines psychotherapy and oriental aspects of "Diagram theory of InShimDoShim" that Yulgok, a Neo-Confucian scholar in the Joseon Dynasty, wrote about action of the mind and suggests ways to use it. Results and Conclusion: Diagram theory of InShimDoShim contains much content that can be applied in psychotherapy. It has a positive perspective of human nature and looked at life as realization of nature and life as subjective self-realization. Positive and negative experiences of life are expressions of positive nature. By reinterpreting these experiences, humans contribute to the goal of life that expresses their nature in a healthy way. Yulgok defines a healthy mind capable of living a good life as "an inshim who listens to doshim's command". Therapists can adopt this mindset as the goal of psychotherapy. Yulgok said that the way of manifesting nature is only possible through energy, and that the clear and tidy of this temperament creates a healthy and unhealthy mind. In this part, it is possible to apply therapeutic intervention of the diagram theory of InShimDoShim and Oriental medicine. Oriental medicine can calm temperament by using a treatment method to regulate energy, and clear energy creates a healthy mind and body. The principle that the mind is composed of nature and energy provides a basis for psychosomatic medicine.

  • Objectives The aim of this study was to develop a new Korean psychotherapeutic model in terms of emotion. Methods We compared the five minds mutual restriction therapy with short-term dynamic psychotherapy (STDP). We summarized 4 similarities and 4 differences of these two models of psychotherapy. Results 1. Short-term dynamic psychotherapy (STDP) needs active intervention of the therapist, with a restricted therapeutic focus and session. It blends with the present state of oriental neuropsychiatric clinics, and is suitable for Korean medical psychiatrists to apply short-term dynamic psychotherapy (STDP) to their clinical settings. 2. Short-term dynamic psychotherapy (STDP) and five minds mutual restriction therapy are similar, in that they both mainly use the emotions, needing restricted therapeutic focus and sessions, and active intervention of the therapist. 3. Short-term dynamic psychotherapy (STDP) and five minds mutual restriction therapy are different in their methods of arousing therapeutic emotion, the necessity of the patient being unconscious, the standard of patient selection, and the importance of follow up.Conclusions It is necessary to develop a new Korean psychotherapeutic model, which amalgamates the advantages of both methods of psychotherapy, and considers the present state of clinic. It is necessary that the Korean medical psychiatrists introspect themselves, since they are not merely therapists but also a role model for the patient.

  • Objectives : Hakomi therapy is a body-centered psychotherapy established by Ron Kurtz in the 80s. Here we introduce the clinical possibilities of application in Korean medicine through Hakomi therapy. Methods : At first, we present the definition, basic principles, terms and outline of Hakomi therapy in reference to "Body-centered psychotherapy The Hakomi Method," published by Ron Kurtz. Then we study the clinical application of Hakomi therapy on Korean medicine. Results : There are many similarities between Hakomi and Korean medicine, such as Mind-Body holism, organicity through homeostasis of living things, non-violent attitude of therapist like Tao, and emphasis on breathing by corresponding with Nature. Also, there are similarities in methods, such as Ohjisangseung, Iijungbyunqi, and Qigong. Hence, Hakomi therapy can be useful in Korean psychotherapy. Conclusions : If we can graft Hakomi therapy onto Korean psychotherapy, it will be efficacious for Korean psychotherapy to be systematized.
