  • The purpose of this study is to provide the data for the co-operative treatment of western and oriental hospital. The studies were made a questionnaire to analyze inpatients' awareness on the systems of co-operative treatment and to observe the differences in medical service satisfaction between inpatients who had experienced the co-operative treatment of western and oriental hospital(Group 1) and those who did not (Group 2). The survey was conducted in February 1998, on 250 inpatients who were in a hospital which provided co-operative treatment of western and oriental medicine in Pusan. Korea. The results of this study were disclosed as follows: 54.2% of western hospital inpatients and 90.5% of oriental hospital inpatients suffered from diseases of the nervous system 88.9% of Group 1 and 72.2% of Group 2 believed that the co-operative treatment of western and oriental hospital was more effective in curing diseases of the nervous system. 33.5% or inpatiens in the western hospital and 87.4% of inpatients in the oriental hospital had received the co-operative treatment. In the case of the oriental hospital inpatients who had experienced western treatment, 36.8% received an examination radiologic, 30.7% received a laboratory test, 17.8% received physical therapy, and 14.1% received medication. Whereas, in case of the western hospital inpatients who had experienced oriental treatment, 71.8% received acupuncture, 23.9% received herbal medicine, and 2.8% received oriental medical tests. As to the opinion on the systems of co-operative treatment, 49.6% of Group 1 agreed that 'New medical institutions that adopt the merits of both western and oriental medicine are absolutely necessary.', and 48.9% of Group 1 agreed that 'Since there are strong points and weak points in both western and oriental medicine, partial and gradual introduction of the two systems would be better.' Whereas, 49.6% of Group 2 agreed that the partial and gradual introduction, and 35.7% of Group 2 agreed that the necessity of the new medical institutions. As to the motives for visiting the hospital, the most popular reason for all the inpatients was "others' advice". In the case of Group 1, however, the most popular reason was "the possibility of co-operative treatment". In regards to medical cost, the oriental hospital inpatients felt that their medical cost was too expensive. On the other hand, a smaller percentage of the western hospital inpatients felt that western hospital medical cost were too expensive. • Automobile insurance medical expenses increased by 12% in year 2015 compared to year 2014. But the oriental medical service expenses in automobile insurance increased by 36% during the same period. In this paper the reason for the rapid increase of expenses for oriental medical service was analyzed using the method of decomposing medical expenses. As a result of analyzing 34,351,120 cases that were examined and completed during the period of 2014~2015, the number of oriental medicine patients increased by 27% and the medical expense per patient increased by 7%. The result of analysis showed that there was no significant change in service period per patient but medical expense per day increased by 7%. The increase in the number of patients receiving only oriental medical services was 32%. Increase in the number of patients receiving medical treatment and oriental medical services was 24% and the number of patients receiving medical treatment only decreased by 4%. There was significant increase in non standardized cost of oriental physical therapy which was one reason of the increase of the expenses. However, the most influential factor of the increase in the expenses of oriental medical services was the increase of the number of patients.

  • Substantial evidence suggests that behavioral and reinforcing effects of cocaine can be mediated by the mesolimbic dopaminergic system. It has been shown that repeated injections of cocaine produce increase in locomotor activity, expression of the immediate-early gene, c-fos in the nucleus accumbens (NAc), which was one of the main dopaminergic terminal areas. Herbal-acupuncture as a therapeutic intervention has been widely used for the treatment of many functional disorders such as drug abuse. Coptidis Rhizoma (CR) and its main component, berberine (BER) were selected as herbal medicine of herbal-acupuncture. Both medicines have been known to have the therapeutic effect on the central nervous system. In order to investigate the effects of CR and BER herbalacupuncture at shenmen (HT7) point (CR/H and BER/H) on the cocaine-induced behavioral sensitization, the influence of CR/H and BER/H on repeated cocaine-induced locomotor activity, the change of c-Fos expression in the brain by immunohistochemistry were examined. Male SD rats were given CR/H (0.4mg/kg) and BER/H (0.1mg/kg) 30 min before daily injections of cocaine hydrochloride (15mg/kg. i.p.) 10 days. After 3 days withdrawal, rats received a challenge injection of cocaine (15mg/kg, i.p.). Systemic challenge with cocaine produced much larger increased locomotor activity, accumbal Fos-like immunoreactivity in the NAc. Pretreatment with CR/H and BER/H significantly inhibited cocaine-induced locomotor activity, the change of c-Fos expression in the rats. Our data demonstrated that the inhibitory effects of cocaine-induced behavioral sensitization by CR/H and BER/H were closely associated with the reduction of presynaptic dopamine release in the NAc. These results suggest that CR/H and BER/H can be effectively applied to cocaine addiction.

  • Objective: Ayurveda is a complementary and alternative medical (CAM) system that has been practiced primarily in the Indian sub·continent for 5,000 years. As need for CAM increases, interest in Ayurveda is drawing more attention in Western countries. But in Korea, understanding of Ayurveda is superficial due to a lack of information and research. In this article, we investigated not only the philosophical features of Indian Traditional Medicine, but its relationship with Korean Oriental Medicine. Methods: From April to August 2004, we sought mutual cooperation through observation at research institutes (Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha, National Institute of Ayurveda, Institute of Medical Science, Pharmacopoeial Laboratory for Indian Medicine) and performed on-the-spot surveys & discussions. Results & Conclusions: We conclude that the philosophies of Indian Traditional Medicine could extend those of Korean Oriental Medicine. Adopting some promising Indian Traditional Medicine techniques such as PanchaKarma and KsharaSutra treatments which have been shown to have efficacy and safety could contribute to the development of Korean Oriental Medicine's internal & external medical treatment. Further studies of Indian Traditional Medicine are needed.

  • The Song Dynasty(宋代) period gained the summit in the developmental phase of the history in pediatrics. In 1076, Taeuiguk(太醫局) was founded and Sobangmaek(小方脈) was the one of nine branch in Taeuiguk(太醫局). As a result, educational agency and system was arranged in the field of pediatrics. At the same time, pediatrics have furnished with foundation to develop independent field in medical science. Especially, Byeonjeungnonchi(辦證論治) system is established in pediatrics science according to the compilation of "Soayakjeungjikgyeol(小兒藥證直訣)" by Jeoneul(錢乙). Children's doctors, Jeoneul(錢乙), Jinmunjung(陳文中) and Donggeup(董汲) arranged clinically theories, so they made that age the peak of the pediatrics. Looking at the developmental part of theory in pediatrics of the Song Dynasty period, Jeoneul(錢乙), who was the representative children's doctor in Song Dynasty period, insisted that children had formed Ojang-yukbu(五臟六腑) in the physiological part but they were not perfect like adult's. Therefore they had to consider the poor part in children's body, and then they had to cure them. 'Byeonjeung(變蒸)' was considered to be normal physiological phenomenon. Also he insisted that Yukeum(六淫), 'Pung, Han, Seo, Seup, Jo, Hwa(風, 寒, 暑, 濕, 燥, 火)' and 'Gyeong, Pung, Gon, Cheon, Heo(驚, 風, 困, 喘, 虛)' are the main cause of the children's five vital organ's pathology Like this, his academic thought, which lay emphasized on children's spleen and stomach and Ojangbyeonjeung(五臟辦證) main principles, affected on doctors, Donggeup(董汲), Yeomhyochung(閣孝忠), Yubang(劉肪), Jang-wonso(張元素), Idong-won(李東垣), Manjeon(萬全). Bangje(方劑) fields of pediatrics had developed so fast and "Taepyeongsunghyebang(太平聖惠方)" contained about 2689 kinds of children's prescription. According to this, there are so many kinds of medicinal shape, for example 'Hwan, San, Go, Dan(丸, 散, 膏, 丹)', which cured children' s disease. Through this, we find that the shape of medicine about the children's diseases had developed to the more simple direction, taking account of the children's clinical trait.
