This study focuses on seeking a desirable direction for the discussions about identity issue of the current Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM). The identity issue of the current TKM is about asking what exactly the current TKM is, what sets the TKM apart from the other medical systems, and what value the TKM has in the contemporary settings, and seeking suitable answers to all these questions. The most important factor that affects these answers is what kind of the concept of identity we have. Current discussions of the identity issue of the TKM take narrow and inflexible concepts of identity such as "Numerical Identity," or "Qualitative Identity", not suitable for TKM, which is always changing and open to other academic fields. This study suggests that Hannah Arendt's concept of identity is more desirable for the TKM, which highlights pluralism and relations, as well as defining identity as a creative, positive, and open-ended process. In addition, this study also suggests that taking a closer look at the "field", which has previously been hidden behind the discourse on the "modernization", will help in figuring out what exactly the identity of the current TKM is. Lastly, the current discussions about "unification of Eastern and Western medical system", and "Integrative Medicine" in Korea will affect the identity issue of TKM.
Objectives : Evaluating water and its comparisons to Yin(陰) and Yang(陽). In this section, we will look into this matter from Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑) and introduce an oriental perspective on the subject of water(水部). Methods : Translating Eumchanboksikjeon(飮饌服食牋) from Junsangpaljeon(遵生八牋). An in depth study of related contents and comparing to the water section(水部) of Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑) Results : According to the section of Varieties of Teas and Water(茶泉類) in The Discussion of Springs(論泉水), Goryum(高濂) divided water into five different types in Eumchanboksikjeon(飮饌服食牋) of Junsangpaljeon(遵生八牋). These different types are Water that runs between rocks, Clear and cold water, Sweet and fragrant water, Spiritual water and Well water. Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑) also analyzed 28 different types of water out the 33 its list. The idea is that one must use water differently according its origins, where it originated, when and what season to maximize the usage of the water because the energy of water would be different. Conclusions : By evaluating water, we have learned that water picks up energy and changes according to its surrounding environments. The different types of water used changes the medicinal ingredients and it affects the human body differently. One must keep in mind, the cycles of water, its energy and how it helps us live a healthier life.
Objectives : Hajae's Diary(荷齋日記) is a personal diary written by Gyu-Sik Ji(池圭植) between 1891 and 1911. He had a strong interest in medicine and maintained the belief that diseases could be cured by medicine. He recorded in significant detail the subject individuals, symptoms, name of prescription, price, the date of exchange and place of purchase in his diary. Methods : His study classifies the era during which Western medicine was introduced to the general public and became popularized in the late Chosun dynasty period based on articles related to medicine in Hajae's Diary. Results : It could be identified that, as of the Gabo Reform(甲午更張) in 1894, Western medicine was introduced into the traditional medicine life and, starting from the Eulsa Treaty(乙巳條約) of 1905, Western medicine became popularized. Conclusions : During the "traditional medicine period", traditional medicine was used for all medicinal activities. However, during the "Western medicine introduction period", Western medicine was used for only specific diseases. In the period during which Western medicine became popular, traditional medicine continued to be used. However, Western medicine was widely used for various diseases.
This study aimed to create a new costume design suitable for publicizing our traditional patterns in the world by using the traditional patterns of Northeast Asia region. The result of this study can be summarized as follows. First, China is characterized by a strictly fixed configuration and a realistic description, Japan a simplistic modality and an abstract-geometrical pattern, and Korea a eclectic type, whole-pattern, and part-pattern. This study aimed to make the pattern by using harmoniously these characters. Second, Korea, China, and japan have many similarities concerning a symbolism and a type of pattern. In the modern fashion, they often use dragon patterns, various flower patterns like peony, plum blossom, or mum, and geometrical patterns. This study focused on expressing patterns which contain the ornamental symbolism of Oriental Look, aside from an existing symbolism, and show a traditional sentiment of Northeast Asia. The method for expressing traditional patterns usually included weaving, dyeing, embroidery, or gold foil. Although these methods have been used in all the three nations, even rubbed metal foil and patchwork have been widely used in Japan.
The epicanthal fold is common natural finding in Asian eyes. It is very common that patients, who look for oriental blephaloplasty for double eye lid, request correction epicanthal fold. It is very often difficult to achieve satisfactory results if the correction of the epicanthal fold is not corrected concomitantly. Many authors described surgical procedures for correction of epicanthal folds. But most of them leave additional scars which tend to be hypertrophic and noriceable. We achieved satisfactory result in epicanthoplasty with invisible scar, using combination of procedures, such as upward incision, double eyelid operation, anchoring suture of the medial upper lid skin to the medial canthal tendon, trans-nasal root subcutaneous mattress suture of the epicanthal fold itself and combined rhinoplasty. For past six years (1998 to 2003) 17 patients have been operated with one of these mentioned procedures. The mean follow up was 4months (2weeks to 6months). All patients were satisfied and no major complication was noted. This method can be one of the effective procedures for correcting the Asian epicanthal fold for avoiding potential visible scar and ancillary procedure in double eye lid blephaloplasty.
Objectives : This paper aims to study the educational meaning of Shanghanjiushilun in Shanghanlun education focusing on purgation therapy. Methods : Clinical medical records in Shanghanjiushilun associated with purgation therapy were chosen, analyzed and its educational meaning was studied. Results & Conclusions : 1. Xushuwei's clinical medical records are significant as it helps the readers think of various disease mechanisms by not omitting mistreatment of the other doctors. 2. Xushuwei's clinical medical records are significant as it helps the readers become aware of the importance of a differential diagnosis through questions and answers. 3. Xushuwei's clinical medical records are significant as it helps the readers avoid looking at one side of things through taking a comprehensive look at disease syndrome in various fields. 4. Xushuwei's clinical medical records are significant as it helps the readers escape unreasonableness by suggesting practical aspect managing the patient. 5. Xushuwei's clinical medical records are significant as it enable the readers to draw a new disease mechanism interpretation by making up for explanations of the pathogenesis quoting medical classics. 6. Consequently, in learning and teaching Shanghanlun, Xushuwei's clinical medical records have enough educational meaning as mentioned above.

The plant Quisqualis indica (Compositae) has ehnopharmcological reputation of being used as a healing agent in Bangladesh. In this study, preliminary screenings were conducted to look at the antimicrobial susceptibility and cytotoxicity of the plant extract. The extractives of the plant were subjected to screening for inhibition of microbial growth by the disc diffusion method. The zones of inhibition demonstrated by the n-hexane, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and aqueous soluble partitionates of the methanolic extract ranged from 8 - 15 mm, 8 - 18 mm, 12 - 20 mm and 10 - 16 mm, respectively at a concentration of 400 ${\mu}g$/disc. All the extractives were also subjected to brine shrimp lethality bioassay for primary cytotoxicity evaluation. Here, the carbon tetrachloride soluble materials demonstrated the highest cytotoxicity with $LC_{50}$ of 0.826 ${\mu}g$/ml, while n-hexane, chloroform and aqueous soluble partitionates of the methanolic extract revealed the $LC_{50}$ of 1.254, 3.866 and 5.366 ${\mu}g$/ml, respectively. This is the first report of the antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity Q. indica.

■ Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation of The Korean Standard Pattern Identification for Stroke and Intima-Media Thickness of common carotid artery(CCA-IMT). ■ Methods 100 subjects with acute ischemic stroke were recruited from the patients admitted to DongEui Medical Center from the June 2011 to January 2014. We assessed 100 patient's Common Carotid Intima Media Thickness data by B Mode ultrasonography. We investigated pattern identification of all subjects based on Korean Standard Pattern Identification for Stroke-III. then, We analyzed their characteristics, risk factor, blood test result, life style. ■ Results We analyzed indicators of Korean Standard Pattern Identification for Stroke-III by Common Carotid Intima Media Thickness difference. As a result, pale complexion, look powerless, drowsiness like to lie, heat vexation and aversion to heat were significantly higher in the CCAIMT ≧ 1.0mm group then in the CCA-IMT < 1.0mm group. ■ Conclusion According to the analysis, the Relationship between Carotid Intima-Media Thickness and The Korean Standard Pattern Identification for Stroke in Ischemic Stroke Patients were founded. To acquire more concrete conclusion on this theme, we need more research.
The prevalence of respiratory diseases is increasing due to social and environmental factors such as increased environmental pollution and air pollution, and among them, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in particular has a high mortality and morbidity rate worldwide. As a result, medical expenses are rapidly increasing, creating a social and economic burden. In response to this, there is a need to discuss ways to reduce the risk from diseases and manage them appropriately, and the most basic starting point in this process is how these chronic lung disease patients are treated in actual clinical settings and how to improve the quality of treatment. There is a need to look into whether there are effective drugs. Western treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is basically a disease in which the airway narrows, so bronchodilators are used to widen the bronchi, and corticosteroids and antibiotics are mainly used to relieve the inflammatory response in the lungs. However, since the mainly used Western medicine does not serve as a fundamental therapeutic drug and contains many side effects, there is a need for drugs that improve the quality of life of patients and are more effective in managing symptoms as symptomatic prescriptions. Therefore, Western and Oriental medicine treatments are needed. The purpose is to suggest better treatments through comparative analysis.
The narration of "Donguibogam" is focused on humans whilst medical books before it focused on diseases. This is shown from the first subtitle of External Body(身形門) chapter, [The Origin of Hyung-Ki(形氣之始)]. The contents of [The Origin of Hyung-Ki] explains that the human body is composed of 'Hyung(形)' and 'Ki(氣)' This perspective is shown throughout "Donguibogam". First, in the aspect of construction, the viewpoint is shown from the JipRye(集例). It divides the body into inside and outside, which is a result of Hyung-Ki perspective. This continues in the table of contents. Naegyeongpyeon(內景) and Oehyeongpyeon(外形) describes the inside and outside of the body, in other words 'Hyung-Ki'. Japbyeongpyeon(雜病) describes complex illnesses with mixed insides and outsides. Tangaekpyeon(湯液) and Chimgupyeon(鍼灸) can be understood as division of treatment methods into inside and outside. When we look at the contents, the human body is created on the basis of the essence and vital energy of the world. Cheon-Ki becomes the 'Ki' that forms the functions of the body, while Ji-Ki becomes the 'Hyung' that constructs the bodily structure. It is considered that 'Hyung' is composed of SaDae(the body essence, vital energy, mentality and blood), and 'Ki' is composed of OSang(the five Jang organs and six Bu organs). 'Hyung' and 'Ki' show various appearances according to physiology and pathology. 'Hyung' is especially shown by obesity or thinness, 'Ki' by color. The obese may have Ki deficiency, coldness, dampness or phlegm. The thin could have blood deficiency, heat, fire or dryness. The color could show the pathology of the five Jang organs by the five colors, but it can simply be divided into black and white, where black means Eum deficiency, and white means Yang deficiency. It is said that the distinctive feature of traditional Korean medicine is that it is a constitutional medicine. In this perspective, further study on 'Hyung-Ki' is of value. If "Donguibogam" was the foundation of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine(四象醫學), study on 'Hyung-Ki' means searching for the origin of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine. Also, the study on Sasang Constitutional Medicine and Hyungsang medicine(形象醫學) will show the modern image of "Donguibogam". Hence, interchange study between "Donguibogam", Sasang Constitutional Medicine and Hyungsang medicine through the term 'Hyung-Ki' could hopefully lead to academic progression.
