Trace organic contaminants in deep-sea sediments near Dokdo were analyzed. Total PAMs concentration ranged 14.8-314 ng/g dry weight and high molecular weight PAHs were dominant. The highest PAHs concentration was detected at A19 which located at Ulleung Basin. Most of organochlorines were under detection limit. Among the detected organochlorines, DDT compounds were dominant and followed by HCHs and HCB. Butyltin compounds and most of organophosphorus pesticides were not detected. Vertical distribution of PAHs showed typical sub-surface maximum and decreasing trends depending on depth. The highest PAHs concentration reached 454ng/g. Some organochlorines, DDT, HCH was detected and also showed decreasing trends. Other target organic pollutants were not detected in core sediments. Abnormally high level of PAHs concentration in A19 was discussed and the input sources were inferred to be the transport of sludge derived pollutant dumped at dumping site 'Byung' by deep current.
Mature acetylcholinesterase (AChE) gene (gm, 1,836 bp) was cloned from the housefly and successfully expressed in the E. coli CodonPlus (DE3) RIL system (GM-E, 72 kDa) with a yield of 1,630 mU/g fresh cells. Using the gm, 10 kinds of mutants were constructed and expressed for enhancing sensitivity to insecticides. The sensitivity of these mutants to five kinds of organophosphate (OP) and three carbamate insecticides was investigated by measuring the apparent bimolecular inhibition constant ($k_i=k_2/K_d$). Surprisingly, the sensitivity of quadruple mutant IGFT was enhanced as much as 7-fold for acephate, 164-fold for demeton-S-methyl, 484-fold for dichlorvos, 523-fold for edifenphos, 30-fold for ethoprophos, 30-fold for benfuracarb, 404-fold for carbaryl, and 107-fold for furathiocarb, compared with that of GM-E, although the sensitivity of each single point mutant was slightly increased. These mutational studies indicated that (i) contradictory to Walsh et al. [39], the residue 327 is the important key residue for enhancing sensitivity as much as the residue 262, (ii) the residue 82 and additional residues of 234, 236, and 585 are also important, and (iii) sensitivity was cooperatively accelerated as the number of strategic mutations increased.
To evaluate the impact of parathion on aquatic organisms, a freshwater bagrid catfish (Pseudobagrus fulvidraco) was exposed to sublethal concentrations $(63,\;95,\;190\;and\;380\;{\mu}g/L)$ of parathion, organophosphorus pesticide for 30 days. Glucose level in the serum of the bagrid catfish was significantly increased than that of control groups in the $190\;{\mu}g/L$ concentration at 30 days and in the $380\;{\mu}g/L$ concentration after 10 days. Bilirubin level was significantly increased in the $190\;{\mu}g/L$ concentration at the end of the experiment. After 10 days, a significant differences of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity increased in the ${\geq}190\;{\mu}g/L$ and $380\;{\mu}g/L$ groups. Though cholesterol concentration was stable, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities in serum were significantly reduced in the $190\;{\mu}g/L$ at 10 days and in the $380\;{\mu}g/L$ concentration at the end of the experiment. In conclusion, if P. fulvidraco was chronically exposed to ${\geq}190\;{\mu}g/L$ concentration of parathion, the hematological changes may be induced due to the stress response.
The toxicity value of 13 kinds of public health insecticides against the adult female cockroach, Periplaneta fuliginosa, Setville in Korea were evaluated by the topical application method of insecticides. The results obtained were summarized as follows 1. S-biolline showed the most strong susceptibility with LD$_{50}$ of 1.9${\mu}g$ per cockroach (1,100 mg) out of 13 kinds of insecticides and other synthetic pyrethroides insecticides (bio-resmethrin 2.8${\mu}g$/cockroach, permethrin 4.3 ${\mu}g$/cockroach) showed some degree of susceptibility to the smoky brown cockroach. 2. Fenitrothion showed 2.5 $\mu$g per cockroach which was the most strong susceptibility out of 8 kinds of organophosphorus and most of them were good susceptibile but there was clear evidence for developed resistance against malathion with LD$_{50}$ of 80.5 {$\mu}g$ per cockroach (1,100 mg). 3. Lindane showed some degree of susceptibility with LD$_{50}$ of 13.9 {$\mu}g$ per cockroach (1,100 mg) but DDT showed the most strong resistance to the smoky brown cockroach out of 13 kinds of insecticides tested.
These studies were conducted to examine the mechanism of acaricidal resistance in the twospotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch). The resistant strains were obtained by succssive selection of five acaricides including carbonphenothion and ethion of organophosphorus compound, dicofol of organochlorine compound, cyhexatin of compound and biphenthrin of synthetic pyrethroid. Esterase isozymes were separated by polyacrlyamide gel susceptible strains. The differences of the esterase isozymes of the resistant strains were Est. 1, Est. 3 in the carbonphenothion-selected strain, Est. 3 in the ethion- and the cyhexatin-selected strains, Est. 1, Est. 3, Est. 7 in the dicofol-selected strain, Est. 7 in the biphenthrin-selected strain as compared to the susceptible strain. With the difference of electrophoretic bands and their activities, esterases were related to the resistant mechanism of tested acaricides.

The possibility of simultaneous analysis of 24 pesticides out of 30 residual pesticides which are subjected to test in the golf courses was examined. The utility of the simultaneous analysis of multi-residue pesticides was evaluated by recovery test through a standard addition method of pesticides in water, soil, and lawn grass. The experimental results of the recovery rates for individual pesticides are as follows : The number of pesticide of which average recovery was over 70% regardless of medium was 16 pesticides. These pesticides were composed of 8 organophosphorus pesticides(Chlorpyrifos, Chlorpyrifos-methyl, Diazinon, EPN, Fenitrothion, Phenthoate, Phosalone, and Toclofos-methyl). 4 organochlorinated pesticides(Daconil, Captan, Endosulfan, and Tetradifon), 2 pyrethroid pesticides(Fepropathrin, Lambda-cyhalothrin) and 2 other pesticides(Bromopropylate, Pendimethalin). On the other hand, in case of Dicofol, average recovery by medium was over 70% for water and lawn grass but was only 53.3% for soil. Therefore, the simultaneous analytical method applied in this experiment is not appropriate for analysis of Dicofol in soil. Furthermore, among 7 pesticides, 2 pesticides(Amitraz and Pyraclofos) showed that theirs average recovery rates deviated from criteria(70~130%) at almost all media, while 5 pesticides(Bensulide, Deltamethrin, Iprodione, Phosphamidon and Tralomethlin) were not detected from all media by selected GC detector(NPD or ECD).
Photodegadation rates of carbofuran in aqueous solution were measured under various test conditions mainly following the guidelines of U.S. EPA and OECD. Half-lives of carbofuran in distilled water were 9.7 days. 3.3 days, and 1 hr under natural sunlight, SUNTEST with UV filter, and SUNTEST without UV filter, respectively. Waters from a paddy field accelerated the decomposition by factor of 6. It was confirmed that the use of SUNTEST could shorten the test period of photodegradation.

This study was conducted to investigate the extraction method for the determination of organochlorine, organophosphorus and synthetic pyrethroid pesticide residues in beef fat by gas chromatography-mass selective detector(GC-MSD). Twenty one pesticide residues in fat were determined using a simple and rapid procedure based on solid- phase extraction(SPE) clean-up cartridges with octadecyl $(C_{18})-bonded$ porous silica, florisil, $10\%$ deactivated florisil. a tandem $C_{18}$ and florisil and a tandem $C_{18}$ and $10\%$ deactivated florisil. Solvent-solvent extraction using acetonitrile was not satisfied to eliminate fat interference for pesticide residue analysis by GC-MSD, and the recoveries of the method in fat ranged from 16.2 to $57.3\%$ except DDT$(83.2\%)$. The recoveries of SPE methods using a tandem $C_{18}$ and Florisil was $59.6\~123.8\%$ except fenitrothion $(135.2\%)$. the SPE method was verified the satisfactory performance of pre-treatment for pesticide residues analysis in fat by GC-MSD. The efficiency of florisil deactivated with $10\%$ water has been not proved significantly on recoveries of pesticide residues in fat.
Methidathion is one of the organophosphorus pesticides commonly used for stamping out harmful pests in farming areas. This paper presents a fatality due to methidathion intoxication and describes the distribution of methidathion in postmortem blood and tissues obtained at autopsy. Qualitative identification of methidathion was achieved by TLC, GC and GC/MS, and quantitative analysis was performed by GC with thermionic specific detector (TSD). The analytes in postmortem specimens were extracted by liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) with ethylether. After the ethylether layer was evaporated, the residue was partitioned into hexane and acetonitrile, and the acetonitrile layer was used for analysis. Tissue specimens were homogenized with 4% perchloric acid and applied for LLE. After extraction, the extracts were reconstituted 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$ pyraclofos (IS, 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml in methanol) for GC and GC/MS analysis. On analysis of postmortem specimens, methidathion was identified and quantitated. The methidathion concentrations were 2.0 $\mu$l/ml in blood, 24.4 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g in liver, 13.9 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g in lung, 21.8 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g in kidney, respectively.
The toxicity of the mixture at 1 to 1 ratio among the insecticides, BPMC, carbofuran, diazinon and monocrotophos to the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens and green leafhopper (GLH), Nephotettix virescens were tested and compared to their toxicities of individual insecticides. Among the mixtures, carbofuran combinations with BPMC and diazinon showed synergistic effect in toxicity to BPH. There was also synergistic action in toxicity with mixture of BPMC plus monocrotophos to GLH. Other combinations were independent in toxic action to both insects.
