A highly flexible polyimide (PI) was synthesized successfully from ethylene glycol bis(anhydrotrimellitate) (TMEG) and 1,3-bis(4-aminophenoxy)benzene (TPER) for its application in electronics. To enhance the thermal stability and mechanical properties of this novel PI, we prepared PI nanocomposite films using nanoparticles of clays that had been treated with organic intercalating agents (organoclays). We used two types of organoclays: montmo-rillonite (MMT) treated with hexadecylamine (C$\_$16/) and MMT treated with dimethyl dihydrogenated tallow quaternary ammonium (l5A). PI/organoclay hybrid films were obtained by first preparing poly(amic acid) (PAA)/organoclay films and then converting the PAA to polyimide by thermal conversion. PAA was characterized by FT-IR and $^1$H-NMR spectroscopy and the conversion of PAA to PI was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. We analyzed the dispersion of the organoclays in the PI film by X-ray diffraction. The thermal stability and mechanical properties of the hybrid films were also investigated.

In this study, styrene butadiene rubber(SBR)/organoclay nanocomposites were manufactured using the latex method with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES) as a modifier. The X-ray diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) images, Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy, swelling ratio and mechanical properties were measured in order to study the interaction between filler and rubber according to the mixing temperature in the internal mixer. In the case of SBR/APTES-MMT compounds, the dispersion of the silicates within the rubber matrix was enhanced, and thereby, the mechanical properties were improved. The characteristic bands of Si-O-C in APTES disappeared after hydrolysis reaction in the MMT-suspension solution and the peak of hydroxyl group was increased. Therefore the formation of chemical bonds between the hydroxyl group generated from APTES on the silicate surface and the ethoxy group of bis(triethoxysilylpropyl) tetrasulfide(TESPT) was possible. Consequently, the 300% modulus of SBR/APTES-MMT compounds was further improved in the case of using TESPT as a coupling agent. However, the silanization reaction between APTES and TESPT was not affected significantly according to the increase of mixing temperature in the internal mixer.

A two-step process of the solution blending and the subsequent melt mixing in a Brabender mixer was used to prepare clay nanocomposites of SAN/PVC and of ABS, respectively. It was found that the new method was effective in obtaining well-dispersed nanocomposites for both cases. The glass transition behavior of the organoclay nanocomposites were analyzed by using theoretical equations. The interaction characteristics were evaluated by using the solubility parameters estimated from the group molar attraction constants.
In the present work, low density polyethylene (LDPE)/aliphatic polyester (APES)/organoclay ternary nanocomposites were prepared. In particular, the effect of a compatibilizer, polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PE-g-MAH), on the morphology and properties of the ternary nanocomposites was investigated. LDPE/APES/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared through melt intercalation method using two different kinds of organoclay. The dispersibility of silicate clays in the nanocomposites was investigated by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The ternary nanocomposites showed higher tensile properties than the LDPE/APES blend did. The dispersibility and properties of nanocomposites containing Cloisite 30B were better than those of the nanocomposites containing Cloisite 20A. Unlike Cloisite 20A, hydroxyl groups in the intercalants in Cloisite 30B interlayer underwent a certain polar interaction with the carboxyl group of APES, favoring the intercalation of APES chains and the formation of LDPE/APES/Closite 30B nanocomposites. However, the introduction of the polar hydroxyl groups also enhanced the interaction with the silicate surface at the same time, thereby rendering somewhat difficult the replacement of the surface contacts by LDPE chains, and impeding the extensive intercalation and further exfoliation of Cloisite 30B in the LDPE/APES matrix. The compatibilizer enhanced the intercalation of the polymer chain inside the clay gallery and thus improved the mechanical properties of the ternary nanocomposites. Rheological measurements of the nanocomposites via frequency sweep experiment indicated a certain interaction between the clay platelet and the polymer molecules in the melted state.
Poly(lactic acid)(PLA) nanocomposites containing various nanofillers were synthesized using the solution intercalation method. Organically modified bentonite clay (NSE), octadecylamine-graphene oxide (ODA-GO), and an NSE/ODA-GO complex were utilized as nanofillers in the fabrication of PLA hybrid films. PLA hybrid films with varying nanofiller contents in the range of 0-10 wt% were examined and compared in terms of their thermomechanical properties, morphologies, and oxygen permeabilities. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed that most of the NSE and ODA-GO nanofillers were dispersed homogeneously throughout the PLA matrix on the nanoscale, although some agglomerate NSE/ODA-GO complex particles were also formed. Among the three nanofillers for PLA hybrid films, the NSE/ODA-GO complex showed the best improvement in film thermal stability. In contrast, NSE and ODA-GO exhibited the best improvement in tensile mechanical properties and oxygen barrier properties of the PLA hybrid films, respectively.
Polyurethane (PU)/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by mixing UV curable urethane acrylate oligomer with organoclay, and a subsequent curing by UV irradiation. As organoclays, commercially available Cloisite 20A (C20A) and acrylsilane modified C20A were used. XRD and TEM analyses revealed that the UV cured PU/clay nanocomposites formed intercalated nanocomposites, and acrylsilane modified C20A are dispersed more finely than unmodified C20A in PU matrix. DMTA, pencil hardness and adhesion test onto PET substrate showed that the clay nanolayers induced an increase in the properties, and the enhancement in the properties was more pronounced in the PU/acrylsilane modified C20A nanocomposites than in the PU/unmodified C20A nanocomposites. It was also observed that the PU/surface modified clay nanocomposites showed remarkably lower shrinkage upon UV curing than the unfilled PU. The nanocomposites showed excellent optical transparency but lower gloss as compared to unfilled PU.

A new electric application method was developed to prepare epoxy/organoclay nanocomposite for the electrical insulation in the AC electric fields and it could be also used in the field of various viscous polymer/organoclay systems. The applied AC electric field condition was as follows; (1) inter-electrode distance: 40 mm, (2) application voltage: 3-11 kV, (3) frequency: 60~1,000 Hz, and (4) application time: 0~60 min. To characterize the epoxy/clay nanocomposite, WAXS and TEM analyses were confirmed. In order to explain how the organic modifier affects the exfoliation phenomena, a mechanism of the oscillating collision of the quaternary ammonium head was proposed and the effects of the AC voltage and frequency and the organoclay content were studied.

Immobilization technique by PVA encapsulation is an effective alternative for wastewater treatment. However little information is available about the effect of PVA characteristics on physical properties as an encapsulation media. This study aims at investigating the effect of the preparation methods of PVA and filler addition to media on the solubility of PVA. The solubility decreased as the freezing temperature decreased and the vacuum-drying was applied. Addition of the PAC (Powered Activated Carbon) and organoclay decreased the solubility of the PVA gels. Organoclay was more effective for lowering the solubility about 25% than the PAC. Nitrification with the PVA-coating media was less sufficient than with the polyurethane media due to the mass transfer restriction for oxygen and nutrients.
