Wastewater was treated by two different treatment processes; activated sludge process and advanced wastewater treatment process (KNR process) using lab-scale experiment. Two treated wastewater showed good treatment efficiency of organic matter removal, up to 90% removal. Nitrogen and phosphorus were not effectively removed though activated sludge process, while KNR process showed good removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus; 56% nitrogen removal and 95% phosphorus removal. KNR process showed better removal efficiency of organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus compared to activated sludge process. Organic matter characterization was tracked though measurement of UV scan, SUVA, and XAD fractionation. Treated wastewater showed higher SUVA value than wastewater influent, indicting less aromatic characteristic of organic matter. XAD fractionation showed hydrophilic fraction decreased though wastewater treatment, suggesting microbes preferentially digest hydrophilic and aliphatic molecules rather than hydrophobic and aromatic molecules of organic matter.
In this study, we evaluated the treatment efficiency of livestock wastewater by altering the current density using boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes. As the current density was adjusted from 10 to 35 mA/cm2, the removal efficiency of organic matter increased from 22.2 to 71.5%. Similar to that of organic matter, the removal efficiency of color increased with increasing current density up to 85.7%, indicating a higher removal efficiency for color than that of organic matter. The removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen increased from 14.6 to 53.3% as the current density increased, but it was lower than that of organic matter. In addition, the removal of organic matter, color, and ammonia nitrogen followed first-order reactions, according to the reaction rate analysis. The energy consumption ranged from 4.87 to 8.33 kWh/kg COD, and it was found that the organic matter removal efficiency was more efficient at high current densities. Based on various analyses, the optimal current density was 20 mA/cm2, and the corresponding energy consumption was 6.824 kWh/kg COD.
An experimental study on improvement of the paper-mill wastewater treatment using the pure oxygen activated sludge process was conducted. The effects of hydraulic retention time(HRT) and BOD loading on organic removal efficiency were investigated. The BOD removal efficiencies were above 90% under all examined HRTs except for HRT of 3 hours. The increase of HRT from 3 hours to 6 hours, and to 12 hours significantly improved BOD and COD removal efficiencies, respectively. However, additional increase of HRT did not affect organic removal efficiency. F/M ratio change at fixed HRT did not affect organic removal efficiency. However, F/M ratio investigated in this study(0.11~1.98kgBOD/kgMLVSS/day) was 5 times greater in maximum than that of conventional activated sludge process, which implies that pure oxygen activated sludge process can treat wastewater with high organic strength. Under the same HRT, the volumetric BOD loading change cause no effect on organic removal efficiency also.
Laboratory investigation was conducted to evaluat the mixing effects on organic removal efficiency to treat low-strength synthetic wastewater using modified anaerobic - filter reactor combining anaerobic filter and upflow anaerobic sludge blanket. Using the modified process the low-strength wastewater like municipal sewage could be treated with 85% T-COD removal efficiency at hydraulic retention time of 6 hours. At the constant organic loading of 0.5 kg COD/m 3-day, the organic removal efficiency and effluent COD concentration are increased as influent COD concentration increased from 125 mg/l to 500 mg/l. Mixing effects on organic removal efficiency are evident and optimum mixing speed is found as 50RPM. Placing the granular sludge and media on which slime layer was pre-formed into the reactor seemed to be very effective In achieving short start-up period. Therefore, the steady state was achived after 4 weeks and 1 week based on T-COD and S-COD, respectively.
A mathematical model for organic removal efficiency was investigated in a fluidized bed biofilm reactor by changing the feed flow rate, the residence time and the recycle flow rate. In batch experiment, organic removal could be assumed as first order and an intrinsic first order rate constant(k1) was found $6.4{\times}^{-6}cm^3/mg{\cdot}sec$ at influent COD range of 3040 - 6620 mg/L. In continuous experiment, at the condition of the influent COD, 3040 mg/L, the superficial upflow velocity, 0.47 cm/sec, the biofilm thickness 336 ${\mu}m$ and the biofilm dry density 0.091 g/mL, the calculated COD removal efficiency from the mathematical model gave 60% which was very close to the observed value of 66 %. As the feed flow rate was increased, the COD removal efficiency was sharply decreased and at constant feed flow rate, the COD removal efficiency was decreased also as the residence time being decreased.
Lab-scale experiments have been carried out to investigate the effect of F/R ratio of ASBR (Anaerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor) process on the removal of the organic matters in ammonia stripped swine wastewater. Three ASBR inoculated with sludge mixed with granular sludge of UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) and anaerobic digested sludge of municipal wastewater treatment plant were operated. Ammonia stripped swine wastewater was used as influent. Prior to conducting the experiments with varied conditions, the effect of increasing organic loading rate from 2.34 to $5.79gTCOD_{Cr}/L$-day at a fixed F/R ratio of 0.1 on the organic removal efficiency has been studied during start-up period. As the result of the experiment, under the condition of varied organic loadings, less than $4.14gTCOD_{Cr}/L$-day, the removed efficiency $TCOD_{Cr}$ of the ASBR process is 83% resulted from the mean value of effluent $TCOD_{Cr}$, 9,125 mg/L during the start-up period. Then ASBRs were operated with F/R ratio of 0.024, 0.303 and 0.91 respectively. Organic loading rate was increased from 4.56 to $15.43gTCOD_{Cr}/L$-day to investigate the effects of F/R ratio and organic loading rate on the organic removal efficiency. As the result of the experiment, less than $6.23gTCOD_{Cr}/L$/L-day, F/R ratio haven't an effect on the organic removal efficiency and the mean removal efficiency of TSS, $TCOD_{Cr}$ and $SCOD_{Cr}$ was about 80%, 86% and 78% at the all of F/R ratio. But as organic loading rate was increased from 8.54 to $12.04gTCOD_{Cr}/L$-day at the F/R ratio of 0.024, the removal efficiency of $SCOD_{Cr}$ decreased from 71% to 63%. The range of decreased removal efficiency of $SCOD_{Cr}$ at the F/R ratio of 0.024 was much more higher than at the F/R ratio of 0.303, 0.91. Thus, as organic loading rate was increased, ASBRs were operated with high F/R ratio to obtain high removal efficiency.
The effect of major operating parameters in spray drying sorber(=SDS) for automatic control for the simultaneous removal of acidic and organic gaseous pollutants from solid waste incinerator was performed. The field experiment was carried out in pilot scale test for the quantification of major operating parameters of hydrophilic and the hydrophobic pollutants. The removal efficiencies of $SO_2$and HCI in the 5wt% slurry condition were being increased with the increase of the stoichiometric ration which is the molecular ratio of lime to the pollutant concentration, and with the decrease of inflow flue gas temperature in the pilot SDS reactor. The removal efficiency along the height of spray drying sorber was closely related to the temperature profile, and more than 90% of total removal efficiency was achieved in an absorption region. For the removal of acidic gas the optimum operating condition considering the economics and a stable operation is the 5wt% of slurry concentration, 1.2 of stoichiometric ratio and 25$0^{\circ}C$ of inflow flue gas temperature. For the organic gases of benzene and toluene the removal efficiencies were 20-60% which is much lower than that of acidic gas. The best removal efficiency was obtained at 1.5 of stoichiometric ratio and 25$0^{\circ}C$ of inflow flue gas temperature. The organic\`s removal efficiency along the height of spray drying sorber was quite different from that of acidic gas, that is, more than 60% of the total removal efficiency for benzene and 90% of the total removal for toluene were achieved in the dried adsorption region, which was formed at the lower or exit part of the reactor.
This study was initiated to evaluate the efficiencies of DEPHANOX and Modified-DEPHANOX, which were devoloped to enhance nitrogen removal efficiency in municipal wastewater treatment. In the results, removal efficiency of organic matters was not affected much by increased loading rate of organic matters which is contained in influent. The nitrogen removal efficiencies according to the loading rate of influent TN was decreased drastically in conditions of over $0.2kg/m^3{\cdot}day$, which is T-N loading rate, and the DEPHANOX process was affected more sensitively than the M-DEPHANOX was. When the temperature was altered from $25^{\circ}C$ to $16^{\circ}C$ at HRT 6hrs, the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen was still over 90% and it was concluded that both DEPHANOX and M-DEPHANOX were strong enough to endure temperature variation. Moreover, both processes showed over 90% in ammonia removal efficiencies in over HRT 5hrs, so it was concluded that they were strong in HRT variation. M-DEPHANOX process showed a higher value than DEPHANOX did in T-N removal efficiency to the extent of 4~21 %, which resulted from differency of denitrification rates and the biosorption efficiency of organic matter in both processes. In the condition of HRT less than 4hrs, concentrations of ammonia nitrogen contained in effluents and nitrification reactors, might be sensitively affected by biosorption efficiency of organic matters in first separation tank. In the effect of effluent nitrate concentration in phosphorus removal, the more effluent nitrate concentration was decreased, the more phosphorus removal efficiency was increased. This result is related to the decrease of concentration of effluent nitrate which resulted from nitrification inhibition by decreased HRT.
The water treatment by was performed to remove VOC and organic substances in the multi-stage ozone contactor. Ozone is mainly utilized to change the chemical structures of organic substance, of which finally has the purpose to degrad them. The removal efficiency of VOC has 20~60% at the ozone concentration of 3 ppm, in case of trichloroethylene, its efficiency is reduced by 85% at the ozone contact time of 8 min. Design factors such as the number of stage, ozone concentration, zone contact time are determined for optimal treatment in the multi-stage contactor.
This study was accomplished using packed bed column reactors that contain nonsurface-modified polypropylene media and surface-modified media from hydrophobic surface property into hydrophilic property by ion beam irradiation. The objectives of this research was investigated the characteristics of organic compounds removal and microbe attachment from sewage of school cafeteria in these reactors. In 736.8 mg/L of the average inflow $COD_{Cr}$ concentration the reactors with and without surface modification showed 81.8% and 70.3% of average $COD_{Cr}$ removal efficiencies, respectively, which proves the $COD_{Cr}$ removal efficiency of surface-modified media reactor is higher than that of nonsurface-modified media reactor. After 90 days, there were maximum differences between modified system and non-modified system. In that time the maximum removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ was 96.5% in modified system and was 85.2% in non-modified system that showed removal efficiency of surface-modified media system is 11.3% higher than that of nonsurface-modified media system. The average removal efficiency of SS was 80.4% for the surface modified system and 61.6% for the non-modified system under same condition. Also, the reactor of surface-modified media has advantage on microbe attachment and biofilm formation.
