To investigate the solute pattern of salt marsh plants in Suncheon Bay in Korea, plants and soil samples were collected at three sites from July to September 2011. The soil pH around the investigated species was weakly alkaline, 6.9-8.1. The total ion and Cl- content of site 1 gradually increased, while those of site 2 and site 3 were lowest in August and highest in September. The exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $K^+$ in the soil were relatively constant during the study period, but the soil exchangeable $Na^+$ content was variable. Carex scabrifolia and Phragmites communis had constant leaf water content and very high concentrations of soluble carbohydrates during the study period. However, Suaeda malacosperma and S. japonica had high leaf water content and constant very low soluble carbohydrate concentrations. Carex scabrifolia accumulated similar amounts of $Na^+$ and $K^+$ ions in its leaves. Phragmites communis contained a high concentration of $K^+$ ions. Suada japonica and S. malacosperma had more $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ ions than $K^+$ ions in their leaves. Suaeda japonica had higher levels of glycine betaine in its leaves under saline conditions than C. scabrifolia and P. communis. Consequently, the physiological characteristics of salt marsh chenopodiaceous plants (S. japonica and S. malacosperma) were the high storage capacity for inorganic ions (especially alkali cations and chloride) and accumulation of glycine betaine, but monocotyledonous plant species (C. scabrifolia and P. communis) showed high $K^+$concentrations, efficient regulation of ionic uptake, and accumulation of soluble carbohydrates. These characteristics might enable salt marsh plants to grow in saline habitats.
Various parameters such as solvent selection, concentration, solid/liquid ratio, soaking time, temperature, stationary, shaking conditions, and repeated extractions were investigated in order to determine the optimum extraction conditions of ${\beta}$-glucosidase from bagasse fermented by mixed culture of Aspergillus niger NRC 7A and Aspergillus oryzae NRRL 447. Among various solvents tested, non ionic detergents gave the best results than the inorganic or organic salt solutions and distilled water. The optimum conditions for extraction of ${\beta}$-glucosidase were 30 min soaking time at $40^{\circ}C$ under shaking condition at 150 rpm, with solid/liquid ratio 1:15 (w/v), which yielded $2882.74{\pm}95.52U/g$ fermented culture (g fc) of enzyme activity. With repeated washes under the above optimum conditions, the results showed that enzyme extracted in the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ washes represents about 90% of the total activity.
A new gel polymer electrolyte based on the modified polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polyacrylonitrile-co-bis[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl]itaconate (abbreviated as PANI) copolymer was synthesized in expectation of enhanced trapping ability of liquid electrolytes. PAN and PANI blend was complexed with organic solvents, ethylene carbonate (EC) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC), and $LiClO_4$ salt. The highest room temperature conductivity of $2\times10^{-3}\;Scm^{-1}$ was found for a film of 25PAN+10PANl+50EC/DMC+$15LiClO_4$. The solvent-rich crystalline part decreases due to the blending of PANI and therefore number of charge carriers increases giving higher ionic conductivity. The addition of PAM as a host polymer in the PAN-based gels has beneficial effects such as higher ionic conductivity, better thermal characteristics, better miscibility with solvent, wider electrochemical stability, and better interfacial stability with lithium electrode, though it exhibits slightly less mechanical rigidity.
Ionic liquids (ILs) existing as liquid state at room temperature are composed of a immense heterocyclic cation and inorganic anion which is smaller than cation's size. Thus, the species of cation and anion as well as the length of alkyl group on the cation have influence on their physical properties. Their outstanding properties such as non-volatility, thermal stability and wide range of electrochemical stability make these materials excellent candidates for green solvent which can substitute the conventional organic solvents. In this study, ILs based on imidazolium cation have been synthesized such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([BMIM][Br]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM] [Cl]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide ([BMIM][I]), and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][$BF_4$]). The density, viscosity, refractive index, heat capacity and ionic conductivity of [BMIM][Br], [BMIM][I], and [BMIM] [$BF_4$] were measured over range of temperature of 293.2 to 323.2 K. The density and refractive index values of [BMIM][I] were the highest among three ILs and the viscosity values of [BMIM][Br] were the highest among three ILs. The heat capacities [BMIM][$BF_4$] were higher than those of [BMIM][Br]. The ionic conductivities of [BMIM][$BF_4$] were higher than those of [BMIM][I].
These studies were investigated ionic balance of leaves from different stalk positions of tobacco plant (cv. NC82) grown on pots supplied with nitrate salts solution in the phytotrone. The results of studies are summerized as follows: 1. In comparision with the leaves along the stalk positions, lower position contained higher proportion of total cation and total anion including organic acid, but their concentration lessened gradually at the upper stalk. The ratio in amounts of inorganic cations and anions in leaf laminae depended on their stalk positon, being more than three times in the fifth, but becoming about 1.3 in the tenth. 2. Inorganic cations in the laminae were mostly $K^+$, $Ca^{{+}{+}}$, and $Mg^{{+}{+}}$, comprising about 80% of total with the first two regardless of their stalk positions. Among these two ions $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ tended to become higher at lower stalks, while $K^+$ was higher in younger and became lower when leaves got older and/or more number of leaves were emerged. 3. Total cations were balanced with inorganic and organic acid anions. Composition of inorganic and organic anions were different along stalk positions, ionic balance was governed by organic acid anions dominantly in older leaves, but by inorganic anions in the younger leaves. 4. The discrepancy in the balance between total cations and anions was more pronounced in the older leaves containing higher amount of cations and organic acids. It was suggested that discrepancy was due to precipitation of oxalate as Ca-salt which was not dissolved in the methylation solution of measurement employed.

The fiber wall filling(FWF) technology, which is based on Precipitatin of fillers in the micropores of the cell wall structure of never-dried chemical pulp fiber, has been developed to improve filling and loading process in papermaking. In presenting FWF technique here, micropores of pulp fiber are first impregnated with an ionic solution of water soluble salt and consecutively impregnated with the second salt solution. This procedure generates an insoluble precipitate within the micropores of cell wall by chemical interaction of these two ionic salt solutions This is the first attempts to use FWF technology for the quality of waste paper grade which is recycled in papermaking, even though this FWF technology has been impressively improved for never-dried chemical pulp in filling and loading process of papermaking. The precipitated amount of CaCO$_3$ and SrCO$_3$ reached 5-6% and 4-5% of the waste paper weight respectively, which was measured by ash content of the burned waste paper fiber. On the other way the precipitated amounts of those materials impregnated into never-dried chemical pulp fiber have reached 17-18% and 16-18% respectively. The micropore loading technique gives optical and physical properties to the handsheets formed with celt-wall-filled fibers which are better than those handsheet properties resulting from conventional loading. The papers made from the cell-wall-filled pulps are stronger than those with the customary location of filler between the fibers.
The major ionic components of precipitation collected at the 1100 Site of Mt. Halla and Jeju city have been determined. The reliability of the analytical data was verified by the comparison of ion balances, electric conductivities and acid fractions; all of their correlation coefficients were above 0.94. Ionic strengths lower than $10^{-4}$ M were found in 53% of the 1100 Site samples and 28% of the Jeju city samples. Compared with other inland areas, the wet deposition of $Na^+,\;Cl^-\;and\;Mg^{2+}$ was relatively larger, but that of $NH_4^+,\;nss-SO_4^{2-}$(non-sea salt sulfate) and $NO_3^-$ was lower. Especially the wet deposition increase of $Ca^{2+}$ in the spring season supports the possibility of the Asian Dust effect. The acidification of precipitation was caused mostly by $SO_4^{2-}\;and\;NO_3^-$ in the Jeju area, and the organic acids have contributed only about 7% to the acidity. The neutralization factors by NH₃were 0.47 and 0.48, and that of CaCO₃was 0.31 and 0.25 at the 1100 Site and Jeju city, respectively. Investigation into major influencing sources on precipitation components by factor analysis showed that the precipitation at the 1100 Site had been influenced mostly by an anthropogenic source, followed by soil and seawater sources. The precipitation at Jeju city was mainly influenced by oceanic sources, followed by anthropogenic and soil sources.

Atmospheric fine particles $(PM_{2.5})$ were collected at the background sites, Kangwha, Taean, and Kosan and characterized to understand their behaviors at the sites. Daily samples of $PM_{2.5}$ mass were measured and ionic species, carbonaceous species, and gaseous species were analyzed. Four-day backward trajectory analysis was also carried out. The mean concentrations of anthropogenic species were highest at Kangwha among three sites, while contributions from sea salts wree highest at Taean during the measurement period due to higher wind speed at Taean. Major chemical components in fine particles were sulfate, organic carbon, nitrate, and ammoniu. Most of the non-sea-salt (nss) sulfates in $PM_{2.5}$ might be present as ammonium sulfates at these sites. Most air parcels arriving at Kangwha and Taean were from northern China. Therefore, both sites were thought to be affected by the same air parcel. At Kosan, during the measurement period, air parcels were from either northern China or sourthern China. The nss sulfate concentration in the air parcels from southern China was higher, while the nss calcium, nitrate, and ammonium concentrations were higher when the air parcels were from northern China.

The daily mean concentrations of PM2.5 mass ionic species carbonaceous species and HNO3, HCl, and NH3 were analyzed at three background sites in Korea : Kangwha, Kosan, and Dongbaik during two intensive field studies between December 1996 and January 1997, Four-day backward trajectory analysis was also carried out. The mean concentrations of anthropogenic species were higher at Kangwha and Dongbaik than Kosan. At these two sites themean concentrations of nitrate and ammonium/ammonia were higher than those of Kosan. It was suggested that these two sites be considered as the background sites of the Seoul Metropolitan Area and Pusan respectively. Major chemical components in fine particles were sulfate organic carbon nitrate and ammonium for all the sites. More than 90% of sulfate were non-sea-salt(nss) sulfates and most of the nss sulfate in PM2.5 might be present as ammonium sulfates at all sites. Most of air parcels arriving a Kangwha and Dongbaik were from the northern China. At Kosan during the measurement period half of air parcels were from the northern China and the other half from the southern China. At Kosan the concentrations of anthropogenic air pollutants originated from the southern China were higher than those typically observed from the northern China.
The adsorption behavior of aromatic acids on Amberlite XAD-4 resin was investigated by measuring the distribution coefficient by batch method. The adsorption of solutes on XAD-4 was affected by the several factors such as, analyte concentration, the pH of solution and concentration of pairing ion. The enhanced adsorption of solutes on XAD-4 in the presence of tetraalkylammonium salt as an ion pairing reagent, referred to as ion interaction, was suggested to follow a double layer model where the pairing ion occupies a primary layer at the adsorbent while the solute anion and other anions in the system comlpete for the secondary layer. Therefore, the ability of an ion pairing reagent to enhance solute adsorption depended significantly on the type and concentration of counter-ion and co-anion accompanying the ion pairing reagent or salt used for ionic strength control. In addition, a good linear relationship between the logarithm of capacity factors measured by batch and elution method as a function of the concentration of ion pairing reagent and methanol can be used to predict the retention in elution method on the basis of capacity factors measured by batch method.
