Soil Chemical Property and Leaf Mineral Nutrient of Ginseng Cultivated in Paddy Field Occurring Leaf Discoloration (인삼 논재배에서 황증이 발생한 토양과 식물체의 무기성분 함량 특성)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the cause of leaf discoloration occurring frequently in paddy cultivation. Chemical property of soil and inorganic nutrient component of leaf were analyzed on abnormal fields of 7 regions where leaf discoloration occurred severely and normal fields of 7 regions among ginseng garden. The pH of abnormal fields was strong acidic condition (pH 5.51) compare to normal fields of slightly acid condition (pH 6.42). Calcium and magnesium content in abnormal fields were lower distinctly than that of normal fields, while EC, organic matter, phosphate, and potassium content showed not distinct difference between abnormal and normal fields. Whereas calcium and magnesium content were distinctly high in normal fields, both of potassium and iron content of ginseng leaf were distinctly high in abnormal fields. In particular, iron content of abnormal fields was more 1.94 times in soil, and 3.03 times in leaf than that of normal fields. In soil chemical property, there were significant negative correlation between leaf discoloration ratio and soil pH, and there were also significant positive correlation between leaf discoloration ratio and iron content. In ginseng leaf, there were highly significant negative correlation between leaf discoloration ratio and calcium content, and there were also highly significant positive correlation between leaf discoloration ratio and iron content.

Discrimination of American ginseng and Asian ginseng using electronic nose and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry coupled with chemometrics

  • Background: American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) and Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng Meyer) products, such as slices, have a similar appearance, but they have significantly different prices, leading to widespread adulteration in the commercial market. Their aroma characteristics are attracting increasing attention and are supposed to be effective and nondestructive markers to determine adulteration. Methods: The aroma characteristics of American and Asian ginseng were investigated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS) and an electronic nose (E-nose). Their volatile organic compounds were separated, classified, compared, and analyzed with different pattern recognition. Results: The E-nose showed a good performance in grouping with a principle component analysis explaining 94.45% of variance. A total of 69 aroma components were identified by GC-MS, with 35.6% common components and 64.6% special ingredients between the two ginsengs. It was observed that the components and the number of terpenes and alcohols were markedly different, indicating possible reasons for their difference. The results of pattern recognition confirmed that the E-nose processing result is similar to that of GC-MS. The interrelation between aroma constituents and sensors indicated that special sensors were highly related to some terpenes and alcohols. Accordingly, the contents of selected constituents were accurately predicted by corresponding sensors with most $R^2$ reaching 90%. Conclusion: Combined with advanced chemometrics, the E-nose is capable of discriminating between American and Asian ginseng in both qualitative and quantitative angles, presenting an accurate, rapid, and nondestructive reference approach.

Effect of Crop Rotation System on Soil Chemical Properties and Ginseng Root Rot after Harvesting Ginseng (인삼 연작지에서 윤작물 작부체계가 토양화학성 및 인삼뿌리썩음병 발생에 미치는 영향)

  • Background: The application of crop rotation systems may reduce the occurrence of soil-borne diseases by releasing allelochemicals and by subsequent microbial decomposition. Methods and Results: For reduction of ginseng root rot by the crop rotation system, after harvesting 6-year-old ginseng, fresh ginseng was grown along with continuous cultivation of sweet potato, peanut, and bellflower. Growth of 2-year-old ginseng was significantly inhibited in the continuous cultivation than in the first cultivation. Sweet potato, peanut and bellflower cultivations assisted in obtaining normal yields of ginseng in the first year after the harvest of 6-year-old ginseng. Salt concentration, potassium and sodium contents were gradually decreased, and, organic matter was gradually increased through cirp rotation. Phosphate, calcium and magnesium contents were not altered. The density of the root rot fungus was gradually decreased by the increase in crop rotation; however it was decreased distinctly in the first year compared to the second and third year. The severity of root rot disease tended to decrease gradually by the increase of crop rotation. Conclusions: Short-term crop rotation for three years promoted the growth of ginseng, however root rot infection was not inhibited significantly, although it was somewhat effective in lowering the density of the root rot pathogen.

Mineralization of organic materials applied to Korean ginseng (고려인삼(高麗人蔘) 유기질비료(有機質肥料)의 무기화(無機化))

  • 1. Ginseng field and virgin soils, to which Yakto, washed Yakto, litters (deciduous and coniferous trees) and bone meal were applied, were incubated at 60% of field capacity of the soils to shed light on the production of $NH_4-N$ and $NO_3-N$ through mineralization of the organic materials being the nitrogen sources for Korean ginseng. 2. Total nitrogen content mineralized in the soils, to which the following organic materials were applied, was:bone meal>Yakto${\gg}$litter (deciduous trees)> washed Yakto, litter (coniferous trees). The content increased with incubation time in all the virgin and ginseng field soils excepting only the virgin soils applied with washed Yakto and litters of which the contents decreased. A large part of nitrogen mineralized in the virgin and ginseng field soils to which Yakto was applied was nitrate form, while a half ginseng field soils and a considerable part in the other virgin soils was ammonium form in the other treatments. 3. $NH_4-N$ content produced in the virgin and ginseng field soils applied with bone meal increased with the time, while it decreased in the other treatments. And the content in the soils applied with bone meal was very high. 4. $NO_3-N$ content showed a continuous increase during the incubation time in all treatments of ginseng field soils and only in the virgin soil to which Yakto was applied, wherease it showed almost no change in the other treatments of virgin soils. And the content in the soils applied with Yakto was very high. 5. Yakto was expected to supply nitrate enough to meet amounts of nitrogen required by ginseng with different ages and also expected to increase in soil fertility, while bone meal was expected only to supply much nitrogen of which a considerable part was ammonium form.

Comparison of Growth Characteristics and Ginsenoside Content of Ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) Cultivated with Greenhouse and Traditional Shade Facility (비닐하우스와 관행재배 인삼의 생육특성 및 진세노사이드 함량 비교)

  • Growth characteristics, root yield and ginsenoside contents of 3-year-old ginseng in greenhouse shaded by $30^{\circ}$ sloped-curtain made of aluminum were compared to traditional shade facility in order to develop cultural practice for organic ginseng. Light transmittance ratio in greenhouse with $30^{\circ}$ sloped-curtain shade was distinctly lower than that of traditional shade from sunrise to 9 a.m., while its ratio in greenhouse was higher than traditional shade since 9 a.m. due to the reflection of light. Air temperature of greenhouse was $1.3^{\circ}C$ higher than that of traditional shade on the first ten days of August due to more reflected light. Root yield of greenhouse was 44% higher than that of traditional cultivation because of the inflow of reflected light and the decrease of disease of Alternaria and Anthracnose by blocking rainfall. Dry matter partitioning ratio of rhizome and lateral root were increased in ginseng cultivated at greenhouse due to longer survival time in leaf than traditional cultivation. Total ginsenoside contents cultivated at greenhouse was decreased in the part of taproot, while it was increased in the part of lateral and fine root compare to traditional cultivation. Individual ginsenoside contents between greenhouse and traditional cultivation showed significant difference more frequent in fine root than taproot and lateral root. Total ginsenoside contents including $Rb_1$, $Rb_2$, Rc, Rd, Re, Rf, $Rg_1$, and $Rg_2$ in whole root of 3-year-old ginseng did not showed significant difference by greenhouse and traditional cultivation.

Growth and Ginsenoside Content in Different Parts of Ginseng Sprouts Depending on Harvest Time (수확시기에 따른 새싹삼의 부위별 생육 및 Ginsenoside 함량 변화)

  • Background: Since the revised Ginseng Industrial Act was passed, ginseng sprouts have become a new medicinal vegetable for which there is high consumer demand. However, the existing amount of research and data on ginseng production has not kept pace with this changed reality. Methods and Results: In this study we analyzed the changes in the amounts of ginsenosides in different parts of growing ginseng sprouts during the period from when organic seedlings were planted in nursery soil until 8 weeks of cultivation had elapsed, which was when the leaves hardened. In the leaves, ginsenoside content increased 1.62 times with the panaxadiol (PD) system and 1.31 - 1.56 times with the panaxatriol (PT) system from 7 to 56 days after transplantation. During the same period, the total ginsenoside content of the stems decreased by 0.66 - 0.91 times, and those of the roots increased until the $21^{st}$ day, and then underwent steep declines. The effect of fermented press cake extract (FPCE) and tap water (TP) on the total amount of ginsenoside per plant were similar, and could be represented with the equations $y=1.4330+0.2262x-0.0008x^2$ and $y=0.9555+0.2997x-0.0031x^2$ in which y = ginsenoside content x = amount of and on the total amounts of FPCE or TP, respectively after 26.4 days, however, the difference between ginsenoside content with FPCE and TP widened. Conclusions: These results suggested that the amounts of ginsenosides in different parts of ginseng varied with the cultivation period and nutrient supply. These findings also provide fundamental data on the distribution of ginsenosides among plant parts for 2-year-old ginseng plants in the early-growth stage.

Quality Characteristics and Potentialities of Sugar-snap Cookies with Red Ginseng Powder (홍삼 분말 첨가 Sugar-Snap Cookie의 제조 및 품질특성)

  • This research is to figure out the manufacture proper1ies and the effect of adding red ginseng powder into cookies. When adding red ginseng powder into wheat, there was no significant change in moisture content while the amount of WRC and AWFC increased significantly. In the manufacturing and quality characteristics, there was no noticeable change in thickness and spreadability. Also, wheat cookies containing red ginseng powder didn't show significant differences either and the control plot had the biggest diameter. The change of chromaticity showed that L-value and b-value seemed to significantly decrease while a-value increased a lot In other words, the more ginseng powder was added, the darker its external colour became. In the organic characteristics, the control plot showed the best result in volume, crust, top grain and in almost every part. The volume had the most satisfying result with 6% of red ginseng powder added, and there was not much difference among the groups added with red ginseng powder. Generally, adding up tp 12% of ginseng powder was found best when making cookies.

Anti-tumor Substance from Panax Kinsenk Roots

  • Antitumor polyacetylenlc alcohol, panaxytriol (Ci7 H2603), was isolated and purified from a Powder of the root of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer. Panaxytriol Possesses unusual Property of being soluble in both water and organic solvents. Panaxytriol inhibited the growth of various kinds of human cultured cell lines in dose-dependent fashion in vitro. The in vivo effects of panaxytriol were tested against C57BU6 mice transplanted with Bl6 melanomas. Panaxytriol (8 and 40 mg/kg) administered intramuscularly (im) produced significant tumor growth delays in mice. Although a detailed mechanism of growth inhibition by panaxytriol is unknown, preliminary results appear to implicate a surface membrane site of action. And its action seems to be more dose-dependent than time-dependent. Finally, panaxytriol pharmacokinetics was evaluated in mice given single 8 mgrkg doses intraperitoneally(ip) or im. Serum panaxytriol content was measured using both tumor growth inhibitory assay and a gas chromatographic method. The maximum serum panaxytriol content after ip and im administration was 35.0 and 1.61 ug/ml respectively. These results indicate that the compound may act as cytotoxic substance even in-patients. Effectiveness for Erectile Dysfunction after the Administration of Korean Red Ginseng (발기부전 환자에서 홍삼투여의 효능)

  • A study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of Korean Red Ginseng (ERG) as an oral agent for erectile dysfunction (EF), which was compared to that of placebo and trazodone. Patients who were believed to have EF of mild or non-organic etiologies, randomized into 3 groups to receive 600 mg KRG 3 times daily (group A), placebo (group B) and 25mg trazodone once a day after evening (group C). All agents were given orally. Ninety patients, composed of 30 in each group, were included and analyzed only when clinical follow-up could be achieved at the end of the study for at least 3 months. There were no significant differences(p>0.05) between each group in mean age (43.7 years), duration of EF (5.8 years), the state of marriage (married : 80 patients) and duration of marriage (18.2 years). In group A, the parameters such as rigidity and tumescence on erection, early detumescence, libido and patient's satisfaction were significantly more effective than that of other group (p<0.05). But there were no significant differences in the parameters such as the frequency of coitus, premature ejaculation and morning erection between 3 groups (p>0.05). The efficacy achieved with KGR (60%) was significantly higher (p<0.05) than that of placebo (30%) and trazodone (30%). There were no significant changes on level of serum testosterone and type of AVS-penogram in group A. No side effect was demonstrated in all patients.
