  • Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with the high efficieney and long lifetime are of growing interest in next-generation displays. Among the factors influencing OLEDs properties, one of unstable factor is $Alq_3$ cationic species caused by the excess holes resided in $Alq_3$ layer. Therefore, we suppressed the accumulation of excess holes by using the mixed-hole transporting layer (MHTL) of NPB and CBP in multilayer green OLEDs. The devices with MHTL showed improved characteristics in the luminous efficiency and lifetime. More characteristics and the carrier transport mechanism will be discussed.

  • [ ${\varepsilon}-caprolactam$ ] was polymerized in the layers of the [DEACOOH]-Montmorillonite intercalations complex at high temperatures ranging from 250% to 260% formed from Na-Montmorillonite and 10-Carboxy-n-decyldimethylethylammonium bromide to achieve [DEACOOH]-Polycaprolactam-Montmorillonite, in which an inorganic polymer (montmorillonite) is chemically combined with an organic polymer (polycaprolactam). The results of X-ray and IR analyses for the samples obtained after polymerization showed that the polymerization reaction was successfully accomplished. For the purpose of studying the polymeric reaction product more precisely, the polymerized product was separated from the silicate layers and analyzed with an X-ray diffractometer and an IR-spectrometer. A comparison of the results of the X-ray and IR analyses of the separated polymer and the polymer that was synthesized by the reaction of ${\varepsilon}-caprolactam$ solely with the organic cation without montmorillonite showed that the obtained both polymers are identical compounds.

  • In prepaparation of the high performance polymer/clay nanocomposite, it is essential to modify the hydrophillic $Na^+$-MMT to hydrophobic alkyl ammonium-MMT via organic surfactant. The organic surfactant, VDAC (vinylbenzyldimethyl-dodecylammonium chloride) was synthesized from two primary chemicals and $VDA^+$-MMT was prepared from $Na^+$-MMT through a cation exchange reaction between $Na^+$ and $VDA^+$ (vinylbenzyldimethyl-$dodecylammonium^+$) cation. $VDA^+$-MMT was then dispersed in styrene and polystyrene/$VDA^+$-MMT nanocomposite was fabricated by in-situ polymerization reaction. The clay dispersion and barrier property of the nanocomposite were investigated. From the investigations, it was confirmed that dispersion of the $VDA^+$-MMT was enhanced compared with that of $Na^+$-MMT and as a consequency of better dispersion, barrier property of organic solvent was improved in a great extent.

  • To understand the properties of soil in Dokdo, we collected soil samples from 12 locations on Seodo and 23 locations on Dongdo, in Dokdo of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province in 2007-2008 and analyzed the soil's physical and chemical characteristics. Sand comprises the largest component (49.37%) of Dokdo soil, followed by silt (40.70%) and clay (9.93%). The soil structure consists mostly of sand loam, followed by loam and silt loam. The pH level of soils from Dokdo varied dramatically among sampling sites and seasons, ranging from 3.36 to 8.02. The total ion content of Dokdo soil also varies greatly among survey places and periods, but in general the total ion content was high in summer when vegetation develops, and low in spring. The exchangeable cation contents of the soil showed low levels in samples where the soil pH was low, including habitats dominated by Agropyron tsukushiense var. transiens and Echinochloa crus-galli, whereas the exchangeable cation contents were high where the organic contents were high, as in habitats dominated by Liriope platyphylla and Artemisia japonica subsp. littoricola. Soil N contents varied greatly among survey sites and higher N contents were found in soil inhabited by Chenopodiaceous plants than in habitats inhabited by other plants. The substantial differences in phosphorus contents among sites were related to excrement of black-tailed gulls. To understand the basic physical and chemical features of the soil on Dokdo, it will be necessary to conduct seasonal and long-term research on soil pH, ion contents, organic contents, N and P, as well as obtaining precise data from samples collected at different depths.

  • This study was carried out to elucidate the vertical characteristics of soil properties at six planted sites of land reclaimed from the sea, in Gwangyang Bay, Jeollanam-do Province, Korea. Based on the types of planting site, the chemical properties of the vertical soil layers varied. The vertical variation was great in the planting sites $Z_1\;and\;Z_2$, but less varied in the mounded planting sites $Z_3,\;Z_5,\;and\;Z_6$. Major reasons for the vertical variation in soil chemical properties included differences in the accumulation of organic matter, soil disturbance by heavy construction equipment, and heterogeneity of soil properties between soil horizons. As soil depths increased, soil salts varied. The electrical conductivity (ECe) increased in the lower areas of planting sites $Z_1\;and\;Z_2$, and the disturbed, saline planting site $Z_3$, but decreased in the lower areas of $Z_3,\;Z_5,\;and\;Z_6$. These tendencies did not coincided with exchange cation concentrations $(Na^+,\;K^+,\;Mg^{++},\;Ca^{++})$. Both total carbon (T-C) and total nitrogen (T-N) accumulated more in the lower areas of planting sites than in the higher areas, and levels were higher closer to the surface than in the soil depths. It is supposed that these tendencies are related to the accumulation of fallen leaves or other organic matter at the soil surface, and the soil chemicals then slowly move downward from the surface. Impediments to tree growth included soil hardiness, high soil salinity and exchangeable cation concentration, low soil moisture content, acidic or alkaline soil, low organic matter, heterogeneity of soil texture and establishment of soil stratification.

  • Imperatorin, a major bioactive furanocoumarin with multifunctions, can be used for treating neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of imperatorin transport in the brain. Experiments of the present study were designed to study imperatorin transport across the blood-brain barrier both in vivo and in vitro. In vivo study was performed in rats using single intravenous injection and in situ carotid artery perfusion technique. Conditionally immortalized rat brain capillary endothelial cells were as an in vitro model of blood-brain barrier to examine the transport mechanism of imperatorin. Brain distribution volume of imperatorin was about 6 fold greater than that of sucrose, suggesting that the transport of imperatorin was through the blood-brain barrier in physiological state. Both in vivo and in vitro imperatorin transport studies demonstrated that imperatorin could be transported in a concentration-dependent manner with high affinity. Imperatorin uptake was dependent on proton gradient in an opposite direction. It was significantly reduced by pretreatment with sodium azide. However, its uptake was not inhibited by replacing extracellular sodium with potassium or N-methylglucamine. The uptake of imperatorin was inhibited by various cationic compounds, but not inhibited by TEA, choline and organic anion substances. Transfection of plasma membrane monoamine transporter, organic cation transporter 2 and organic cation/carnitine transporter 2/1 siRNA failed to alter imperatorin transport in brain capillary endothelial cells. Especially, tramadol, clonidine and pyrilamine inhibited the uptake of [$^3H$]imperatorin competitively. Therefore, imperatorin is actively transported from blood to brain across the blood-brain barrier by passive and carrier-mediated transporter.

  • For understanding the radiation environment in the land of Korea and acquiring baseline data to be referred to at the time of a nuclear accident, cultivated soils in the $0{\sim}15cm$ layer were sampled at 33 sites scattered all over the country and $^{137}Cs$ concentrations were measured by $\gamma$-spectrometry. The soil $^{137}Cs$ concentrations were in the range of $0.7{\sim}17.7$ Bq/kg-dry in the paddy field and $1.2{\sim}27.8$ Bq/kg-dry in the upland field, The means were 6.9 Bq/kg-dry and 9.9 Bq/kg-dry, respectively. In the paddy field, the soil $^{137}Cs$ concentration was positively correlated to the organic matter content and negatively correlated to the clay content. In the upland field, it was positively correlated to the cation exchange capacity. It was revealed that soil organic matter play an important role in the change of soil $^{137}Cs$ concentration.

  • Organic cation transporters (OCTs) are important for absorption, elimination of many endogenous small organic cations as well as a wide array of drugs and environmental toxins. This gene is located in a cluster on chromosome 6 and OCTs are in major organs such as intestine, liver, kidney, brain and placenta. Therefore, expression levels and function of OCTs directly affect plasma levels and intracellular concentrations of drugs and thereby determine therapeutic response. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of the SNPs on OCT1 (C181T and C1022T) and OCT2 (G808T) to analyze haplotype frequency in healthy Korean population. Human subjects have been genotyped for OCT1 (C181T for 195 subjects and C1022T for 825 subjects), using polymerase chain reaction-based diagnostic tests (RFLP). And for OCT2 (G808T), a total of 861 subjects have been genotyped, using pyrosequencing method. Haplotype was statistically inferred using an algorithm based on the expectation-maximization (EM). OCT1 C181T genotyping showed 100% homozygous wild-type (C/C). OCT1 C1022T genotyping showed wild-type (C/C), heterozygous (C/T) and homozygous mutant-type (T/T) and each accounted for 72.1, 24.5 and 3.4%, respectively. OCT2 G808T genotyping results also showed homozygous wild-type (G/G), heterozygous (G/T) and homozygous mutant-type (T/T) and each took 81.8, 17.9 and 0.3%, respectively. Based on these genotype data, haplotype analysis between OCT1 C181T and OCT1 C1022T has proceeded. The result has revealed that linkage disequilibrium between alleles is not obvious (P=0.0122).

  • The effect of a rapid freeze pretreatment of organic ion exchange resins on their grinding properties was studied. It was found that the structure of ion exchange resins was defected by freezing pressure formed in the process of rapid freezing. The defected resins didn't recover their own structure after thawing and those could be easy to be broken at room temperature by small force. Therefore, organic ion exchange resins could be ground readily at room temperature after rapid-freezing the fully swelled resins using by solid carbon dioxide, or liquid nitrogen. The rapid freeze pretreatment of cation exchange resins was very effective on grinding in particular. However, the effect of the pretreatment of anion exchange resins on grinding was less than that of cation exchange resins. In case of anion exchange resins, the ionic form of affected the grindability remarkably.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the pharmacokinetics of organic cations in intrahepatic cholestatic rats. A pretreatment with $17{\alpha}$-ethynylestradiol was used to induce intrahepatic cholestasis, and tributylmethylammonium (TBuMA) was used as a representative model organic cation. When $[^3H]$TBuMA was intravenously administered, the AUC value for TBuMA was significantly increased by $79\%$ in cholestasis, and its total systemic clearance was consequently decreased by $46\%$. In addition, the in vivo hepatic uptake clearance of TBuMA from the plasma to the liver was decreased by $50\%$ in cholestasis. The concentration of bile salts in plasma was increased by 2.1 fold in cholestatic rats. Since TBuMA forms ion-pair complexes with anionic components such as bile salts, the decreased hepatic uptake of TBuMA in cholestasis may be due to a change in endogenous components, e.g., bile salts in the plasma. In isolated normal hepatocytes, the uptake clearance for TBuMA in the presence of cholestatic plasma was decreased by $20\%$ compared with normal plasma. Therefore, we conclude that the inhibition of the hepatic uptake process by the cholestasis may be in part due to the increased formation of ion-pair complexes of TBuMA with bile salts in the plasma.
