The fermentation of medicinal herbs facilitated by microbes is assumed to exert promising therapeutic efficacy on the absorption, bioavailability, and pharmacological effects by speeding up the making or conversion of active constituents into their metabolites. We examined the cardioprotective potential of fermented ginseng, GBCK25, against high-fat diet (HFD)-induced metabolic and functional illnesses as following the essential analysis such as electrocardiographic parameters, alterations of body and organ weights, and echocardiographic studies. The results exhibited that body weights were significantly reduced and the gain of different organ weights were partly eased by GBCK25 treatment. Echocardiography results proposed the amelioration of heart function through normalized levels of left ventricle systolic pressure, ejection fraction, and fractional shortening. These outcomes deliver straight confirmation that GBCK25 could be a potential nutraceutical source for the relief of HFD-induced obesity mediated cardiac dysfunctions.
In the present study, iodine-131 S values (rT ← thyroid) were calculated for 30 target organs and tissues using the most recently developed Korean reference computational phantoms. The calculated S values were then compared with those of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) reference computational phantoms to investigate the dosimetric impact of the Korean S values against those of the ICRP reference phantoms. The results showed significant differences in the S values due to the different anatomical/morphological characteristics between the Korean and ICRP reference phantoms. Most target organs/tissues showed that the S values of the Korean reference phantoms are lower than those of the ICRP reference phantoms, by up to about 4 times (male spleen and female thymus). Exceptionally, three target organs/tissues (gonads, thyroid, and extrathoracic region) showed that the S values of the Korean reference phantoms are greater, by 1.5-3.7 times. We expect that the S values calculated in the present study will be beneficially used to estimate organ/tissue doses of Korean patients under radioiodine therapy.
An experiment was conducted to study the protective role of polyherbal feed supplement (Growell) during induced mycotoxicosis in broilers. A total of 240 Vencobb broilers were divided at day old stage into eight equal groups. Group A served as control and was given plain feed, group B, D, F and H were given Growell at 0.35 g/kg of feed. Group C, D, G and H were given dietary aflatoxin $B_1$ at 0.2 ppm and groups E, F, G and H were given ochratoxin A at 0.2 ppm in feed to study effect of Growell on individual aflatoxicosis, ochratoxicosis and combined mycotoxicosis of broilers. The chicks were given their respective feeds from 1st day to 6th week of age and were vaccinated at 7th and 28th day of age with Lasota strain of Newcastle disease virus. There was no statistically significant effect of mycotoxins individually or in combination on body weight of broilers. However, body weights were highest in group B and lowest in co-mycotoxicated group G. Feed conversion ratio was best in group B followed by A, D, F, E, H and G. Significant improvement in haemoglobin values was observed in broilers due to feeding of Growell in ochratoxin and co-mycotoxicated groups. There was no significant effect of mycotoxin treatment on PCV, TEC and TLC of broilers. Due to single and combined mycotoxicosis, there was reduction in serum total protein, albumin, cholesterol and triglyceride and rise in alkaline phosphatase, creatinine and uric acid levels. Supplementation of diets with Growell reduced the alterations induced due to mycotoxins. There was a significant rise in per cent organ weight of liver and reduction of that of spleen, bursa of Fabricius and thymus of broilers fed mycotoxins. Protection from alteration in per cent organ weight of these organ by supplementation of Growell was recorded. The observed impaired immune response and histopathological changes in liver, kidney, spleen, bursa of Fabricius and thymus of broilers given mycotoxins were protected by supplementation of Growell.
Computational anthropomorphic phantoms are computer models of human anatomy used in the calculation of radiation dose distribution in the human body upon exposure to a radiation source. Depending on the manner to represent human anatomy, they are categorized into two classes: stylized and tomographic phantoms. Stylized phantoms, which have mainly been developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), describe human anatomy by using simple mathematical equations of analytical geometry. Several improved stylized phantoms such as male and female adults, pediatric series, and enhanced organ models have been developed following the first hermaphrodite adult stylized phantom, Medical Internal Radiation Dose (MIRD)-5 phantom. Although stylized phantoms have significantly contributed to dosimetry calculation, they provide only approximations of the true anatomical features of the human body and the resulting organ dose distribution. An alternative class of computational phantom, the tomographic phantom, is based upon three-dimensional imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and computed tomography (CT). The tomographic phantoms represent the human anatomy with a large number of voxels that are assigned tissue type and organ identity. To date, a total of around 30 tomographic phantoms including male and female adults, pediatric phantoms, and even a pregnant female, have been developed and utilized for realistic radiation dosimetry calculation. They are based on MRI/CT images or sectional color photos from patients, volunteers or cadavers. Several investigators have compared tomographic phantoms with stylized phantoms, and demonstrated the superiority of tomographic phantoms in terms of realistic anatomy and dosimetry calculation. This paper summarizes the history and current status of both stylized and tomographic phantoms, including Korean computational phantoms. Advantages, limitations, and future prospects are also discussed.

To investigate the impact of the recently released pediatric reference voxel phantoms (0-, 1-, 5-, 10-, 15-year-old males and females) of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) on organ dose estimates for radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment in pediatric patients, we calculated and analyzed pediatric-specific iodine131 S values (rT ← thyroid) for the 30 radiosensitive organs by conducting Monte Carlo simulations using the Geant4. The gender dependency in the S values was frequently seen for the 15-year-old phantoms with higher S values of female than male. In addition, the age dependency in the S values was observed for most target organs; that is, the S values tend to decrease for older ages (e.g., ~120 times for the gonads between the adult and newborn) due mainly to the inter-organ distances generally longer for older ages. Moreover, we observed that the iodine-131 S values tend to be significantly greater by up to ~145.5 times than those of the stylized phantoms that have been widely used for organ dose estimates of pediatric RAI patients. We believe that the pediatric-specific iodine-131 S values (rT ← thyroid) of the ICRP pediatric reference voxel phantoms should be beneficial to improve the dosimetry of pediatric RAI patients.
Recently, the interest in the orthodontic treatment for children is increased by a rise in national income level. The number of cephalometric radiography that could diagnose a malocclusion and malposition between teeth and jawbone increased. It required attention to radiation exposure, because the subject of dental examination is children which are more sensitive to radiation and the head and neck, the object of that include radiation sensitive organ such as the thyroid, bone marrow, eyes, salivary gland, and so on. In this study, we measured two-dimensional dose distribution in cephalometric radiography system (VATEC Pax-400C) using Agfa CP-G Plus film and MagicMax Dosimeter, and calculated radiation organ dose of head and neck through MCNPX simulation. And then we designed a radiation protective device to decrease radiation dose. The dose distribution of the cephalometric radiography system irradiated the head and neck overall as well as the oral and maxillofacial parts. The radiation organ dose calculated that thyroid, oesophagus and eyes are irradiated high, and the radiation organ dose decreased about 70 ~ 80% by the application of the radiation protective device. The results of this study will be used construction of database for dental radiation exposure and research of reducing radiation dose.
Because the MIRD phantom, the representative mathematical phantom was developed for the calculation of internal radiation dose, and simulated by the simplified mathematical equations for rapid computation, the appropriateness of application to external dose calculation and the closeness to real human body should be justified. This study was intended to modify the MIRD phantom according to the comparison of the organ absorbed doses in the two phantoms exposed to monoenergetic broad parallel photon beams of the energy between 0.05 MeV and 10 MeV. The organ absorbed doses of the MIRD phantom and the Zubal yokel phantom were calculated for AP and PA geometries by MCNP4C, general-purpose Monte Carlo code. The MIRD phantom received higher doses than the Zubal phantom for both AP and PA geometries. Effective dose in PA geometry for 0.05 MeV photon beams showed the difference up to 50%. Anatomical axial views of the two phantoms revealed the thinner trunk thickness of the MIRD phantom than that of the Zubal phantom. To find out the optimal thickness of trunk, the difference of effective doses for 0.5 MeV photon beams for various trunk thickness of the MIRD phantom from 20 cm to 36 cm were compared. The optimal thunk thickness, 24 cm and 28 cm for AP and PA geometries, respectively, showed the minimum difference of effective doses between the two phantoms. The trunk model of the MIRD phantom was modified and the organ doses were recalculated using the modified MIRD phantom. The differences of effective dose for AP and PA geometries reduced to 7.3% and the overestimation of organ doses decreased, too. Because MIRD-type phantoms are easier to be adopted in Monte Carlo calculations and to standardize, the modifications of the MIRD phantom allow us to hold the advantage of MIRD-type phantoms over a voxel phantom and alleviate the anatomical difference and consequent disagreement in dose calculation.

The present investigation was planned to estimate potential possibility of striped field mice, Apodemus agrarius coreae (A. a. coreae), as a biological dosimeter in radio-environmental ecology. We bred captured wild A. a. coreae at laboratory and classified taxonomically based on external, cranial and tooth characters. Organ weights and splenocytic apoptosis were observed in order to establish a basic data on radiation biology of A. a. coreae (male, 40 weeks old). The biological effects was observed at 24hrs following irradiation (doses : 0, 0.5, 1, 2 Gy, dose rate : $0.8Gymin^{-1}$, $^{137}Cs$). Only thymus weights was significantly decreased. Splenocytic apoptosis was increased after irradiation. But splenocytic apoptosis was decreased in 0.5 Gy ${\gamma}$-irradiated mice compared to those of 0, 1, 2 Gy (P < 0.05). These data suggested that events in thymus and spleen of Korean dark-striped field mice, A. a. coreae THOMAS, could be a potential radio-biological indicator in human environments.

Recently High-Definition Reference Korean-Man (HDRK-Man) and High-Definition Reference Korean-Woman (HDRK-Woman) were constructed in Korea. The HDRK phantoms were designed to represent respectively reference Korean male and female to calculate effective doses for Korean by performing Monte Carlo dose calculation. However, the Monte Carlo dose calculation requires detailed knowledge on computational human phantoms and Monte Carlo simulation technique which regular researchers in radiation protection dosimetry and practicing health physicists do not have. Recently the UFPE (Federal University of Pernambuco) research group has developed, and opened to public, an online Monte Carlo dose calculation system called CALDOSE_X(www.caldose.org). By using the CALDOSE_X, one can easily perform Monte Carlo dose calculations. However, the CALDOSE_X used caucasian phantoms to calculate organ doses or effective doses which are limited for Korean. The present study developed an online reference Korean dose calculation system which can be used to calculate effective doses for Korean.
Antimicrobial studies on reproductive organs have been scarcely reported. Candida albicans and Neisseria gonorrhoea test to find out the natural substances of various concentrations in the antimicrobial experiments have been made. Antimicrobial effect of biopole as the natural compound biosynthesis matter that contain anti-inflammatory material, catechin polyphenols and lactic acid as a single natural substance on C. albicans were of great significance. Also the results of antimicrobial effects of biopole, catechin and lactic acid as a single natural substance on N. gonorrhoea, respectively, showed lower concentration than those of the antimicrobial effects on C. albicans. Through the survival of Lactobacillus acidofillus that acts for the protection of the genital tissue the importance of lactic acid was confirmed. Lactobacillus acidofillus protection and C. albicans firmly into disinfected to low concentrations of the natural mixture from biopole and catechin with lactic acid were found and the antimicrobial effects of this natural mixture on N. gonorrhoea were perfect. C. albicans and N. gonorrhoea to disinfect the optimal natural mixture from 2% concentration biopole, 0.2% concentration of catechin and 2% lactic acid were obtained. Through the survival of Lactobacillus acidofillus in the reproductive organs protectable effects were acquired to prevent the infections of reproductive tissue and the recurrence.
