Characterization of Acid-soluble Collagen from Alaska Pollock Surimi Processing By-products (Refiner Discharge)

  • The study was carried out to examine on the refiner discharge from Alaska pollock as a collagen resource by characterizing biochemical and functional properties of collagen. The refiner discharge from Alaska pollock surimi manufacturing was a good resource for collagen extraction according to the results of total protein, heavy metal, volatile basic nitrogen, collagen content, amino acid composition, and thermal denaturation temperature (TDT). TDT of acid soluble collagen from refiner discharge showed $20.7^{\circ}C$, which was similar to that of collagen from Alaska pollock muscle and was higher than that of collagen from Alaska pollock skin. TDT of acid-soluble collagen from refiner discharge was, however, lower than those of skin collagens from warm fish and land animal. Acid-soluble collagen from refiner discharge of Alaska pollock could be used as a functional ingredient for food and industrial applications according to the results of water and oil absorption capacities, and emulsion properties. In addition, if the thermal stability of the acid-soluble collagens is improved, collagen from refiner discharge from Alaska pollock could be more effectively used.

Modeling of Suspended Sediment Transport Using Deep Neural Networks (심층 신경망 기법을 통한 부유사 이동 모델링)

  • Land reclamation, coastal construction, coastline extension and port construction, all of which involve dredging, are increasingly required to meet the growing economic and societal demands in the coastal zone. During the land reclamation, a portion of landfills are lost from the desired location due to a variety of causes, and therefore prediction of sediment transport is very important for economical and efficient land reclamation management. In this study, laboratory disposal tests were performed using an open channel, and suspended sediment transport was analyzed according to flow velocity and grain size. The relationships between the average and standard deviation of the deposition distance and the flow velocity were almost linear, and the relationships between the average and standard deviation of deposition distance and the grain size were found to have high non-linearity in the form of power law. The deposition distribution of sediments was demonstrated to have log-normal distributions regardless of the flow velocity. Based on the experimental results, modeling of suspended sediment transport was performed using deep neural network, one of deep learning techniques, and the deposition distribution was reproduced through log-normal distribution.

  • $({\pm})-{\gamma}$-Rhodomycinone(4) and 10-Deoxy-${\gamma}$-rhodomycinone(5), late-stage Precursors of the alglycone of antitumor antibiotic Rhodomycin(2) were prepared from the cleavage of epoxide ring of 9-ethyl-9,10-epoxy-4,6, 11-trihydroxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydronaphthacene-5,12-dione(10). The epoxide 10 was furnished from 9-acetyl-4,5,6,11,12-pentamethoxy-7,8-dihydronaphthacene(6), which was assembled utilizing ring annelation methodology developed by Hauser-Rhee.

  • 7,9-Dideoxydaunomycinone (32), a late-stage precursor of the aglycone of antitumor antibiotic daunorubicin(2a) was prepared from 3-methoxybenzoic acid(5). Thus, 3-methoxybenzoic acid was converted to 4-methoxy-3-(phenylsulfonyl)-1(3H)-isobenzofuranone(11), which furnished trimethoxynaphthoate 16 upon ring annelation developed by Hauser and Rhee. The trimethoxynaphthoate 16 upon ring annelation developed by Hauser and Rbee. The trimethoxynaphtboate 16 was then transformed into phenylsulfonylnaphthofuranone 22, which was used to make anthracenoate 24 via Michael type reaction with 7-(ethylenedioxy)-2-octenoate(23). Conversion of anthracenoate 24 to tetracyclic product 28, followed by subsequent deprotection of the methyl groups in ring-B and C furnished 7, 9-Dideoxydaunomycinone(32).

  • This paper provides an overview of system analysis of immunology. The theoretical research in this area is aimed at an understanding of the precise manner by which the immune system controls Infec pious diseases, cancer, and AIDS. This can provide a systematic plan for immunological experimentation by means of an integrated program of immune system analysis, mathematical modeling and computer simulation. Biochemical reactions and cellular fission are naturally modeled as nonlinear dynamical processes to synthesize the human immune system! as well as the complete organism it is intended to protect. A foundation for the control of tumors is presented, based upon the formulation of a realistic, knowledge based mathematical model of the interaction between tumor cells and the immune system. Ordinary bilinear differential equations which are coupled by such nonlinear term as saturation are derived from the basic physical phenomena of cellular and molecular conservation. The parametric control variables relevant to the latest experimental data are also considered. The model consists of 12 states, each composed of first-order, nonlinear differential equations based on cellular kinetics and each of which can be modeled bilinearly. Finally, tumor control as an application of immunotherapy is analyzed from the basis established.

Effect of in vitro B-6 Vitameric Forms on Lymphocyte Proliferation in Healthy Young Women with Oral Vitamin B-6 Supplementation

  • A vitamin B-6 (B-6) intake higher than the current Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) has been found to provide an improvement in immune system. Seven premenopausal women consumed their usual diet with the exception of foods relatively high in vitamin B-6 for a total of 27 d. After 7 d, all subjects received a multivitamin supplement containing 2mg B-6 and 4 subjects were given an additional 50mg of B-6 supplement for 20 d. Lymphocyte response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) was measured before and after the supplementation. To determine the effect of different forms of B-6 on lymphocyte proliferation, cell culture media supplemented with pyridoxal (PL) and PLP, as well as B-6 free media, were tested. A 50mg B-6 supplement significantly increased vitamin B-6 status. There was no further enhancement on lymphocyte proliferation when subjects were taking an additional 50mg of vitamin B-6 supplement. In general, lymphocyte proliferation in media with either PLP or PL did not show any prominent difference. These [m-dings suggest that there may be no further benefits of a B-6 dose beyond twice that of the current RDA on lymphocyte proliferation. Further studies are necessary to examine the effect of the B-6 intake level on activities of enzymes involved in cellular B-6 metabolism in lymphocytes to provide substantial insight into the mechanisms underlying the role of B-6 in the lymphocyte proliferation.

Flux of Dissolved Organic and Inorganic Constituents in Forested Headwater Streams

  • Headwaters initiate material export to downstream environments. A nested headwater study examined the flux of dissolved constituents and water from a perennial stream and four ephemeral/intermittent streams in the Upper Gulf Coastal Plain of Mississippi. Water was collected during storm and baseflow conditions. Multiple linear regression was used to model constituent concentration and calculate flux. Event was the major source of water discharged from the ephemeral and intermittent streams however, baseflow was the major source for water discharged by the perennial stream during events. The perennial stream had an area weighted average yields of 10.1, 0.01, 1.03, 0.65 kg/ha/yr of DON (dissolved organic nitrogen), $NO_3^-$-N, $NH_4^+$-N and $PO_4^{-3}$, respectively while large variabilities existed between the ephemeral and intermittent streams. These findings highlight the importance of headwaters in protecting the low order drainage basins as a key to water quality within perennial streams.

Effects of fines content on void ratio, compressibility, and static liquefaction of silty sand

  • Many aspects of the behavior of sands are affected by the content of non-plastic fine particles and these various aspects should be included in a constitutive model for the soil behavior. The fines content affects maximum and minimum void ratios, compressibility, shear strength, and static liquefaction under undrained conditions. Twenty-eight undrained triaxial compression tests were performed on mixtures of sand and fine particles with fines contents of 0, 10, 20, 30, 50, 75, and 100% to study the effects of fines on void ratio, compressibility, and the occurrence of static liquefaction. The experiments were performed at low consolidation pressures at which liquefaction may occur in near-surface, natural deposits. The presence of fines creates a particle structure in the soil that is highly compressible, enhancing the potential for liquefaction, and the fines also alter the basic stress-strain and volume change behavior, which should be modeled to predict the occurrence of static liquefaction in the field. The void ratio at which liquefaction occurs for each sand/fines mixture was determined, and the variation of compressibility with void ratio was determined for each mixture. This allowed a relation to be determined between fines content, void ratio, compressibility, and the occurrence of static liquefaction. Such relations may vary from sand to sand, but the present results are believed to indicate the trend in such relations.

  • Diurnal variation of the flow over a forest canopy on a mountain slope is simulated numerically. In the daytime, the earth surface is heated by the solar radiation and the flow goes up the mountain due to the buoyancy force, and during the night, the air is drained downward along the slope owing to the cooling of the surface by radiation. In this flow process the forest canopy that consists of leaf region and the trunk region plays a dominant role as a momentum sink to the flow, thus the modeling of the leaf area region and trunk region is critical to the successful flow simulation. In the present study, a field measurement in an experimental forest in the State of Oregon in the United States is numerically analyzed. The resistance to the flow in the leaf region is directly related to the leaf area density (LAD), and the trunk is modeled as a cylinder.

A Semantic Service Discovery Network for Large-Scale Ubiquitous Computing Environments

  • This paper presents an efficient semantic service discovery scheme called UbiSearch for a large-scale ubiquitous computing environment. A semantic service discovery network in the semantic vector space is proposed where services that are semantically close to each other are mapped to nearby positions so that the similar services are registered in a cluster of resolvers. Using this mapping technique, the search space for a query is efficiently confined within a minimized cluster region while maintaining high accuracy in comparison to the centralized scheme. The proposed semantic service discovery network provides a number of novel features to evenly distribute service indexes to the resolvers and reduce the number of resolvers to visit. Our simulation study shows that UbiSearch provides good semantic searchability as compared to the centralized indexing system. At the same time, it supports scalable semantic queries with low communication overhead, balanced load distribution among resolvers for service registration and query processing, and personalized semantic matching.
