  • In this paper, we introduce a satellite conceptual design software which can be used for outlining a new satellite as well as for educational purpose. This software consists of three commercial tools: MATLAB, STK(Satellite Tool Kit), and Excel. The management of the design software is done by MATLAB which provides basic calculations, GUI(Graphical User Interface), Excel data base management, and STK control. STK, an orbital simulation software developed by AGI, takes a part of obtaining accurate orbital information of a satellite. Excel, a product of Microsoft, is used for the data base of previous satellites and for the saving place of temporary and final results of the software. The conceptual design of a satellite is to roughly estimate power system and mass. In the power system design, the sizes of solar array and battery are determined. Based on the database of existing satellites, we can estimate the subsystems's mass fraction of a target satellite. Design examples for Kompsat 1 and 2 are suggested for verification of the developed software.

  • In this study, we investigate the feasibility of modeling entire image strips that has been acquired from the same orbital segments. We tested sensor models based on satellite orbit and attitude with different sets(Type1 ~ Type4) of unknowns. We checked the accuracy of orbit modeling by establishing sensor models of one scene using control points extracted from the scene and by applying the models to adjacent scenes within the same orbital segments. Results indicated that modeling of individual scenes with 1st or 2nd order unknowns was recommended. We tested the accuracy of around control points, digital map using the HIST-DPW (Hanjin Information Systems & Telecommunication Digital Photogrammetric Workstation) As a result, we showed that the orbit-based sensor model is a suitable sensor model for making 1/25,000 digital map.

  • This study examined the quenching of ofloxacin (OFL) and flumequine (FLU) fluorescence by $Cuj^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$ in an aqueous solution. The change in the fluorescence intensity and lifetime was measured at various temperatures as a function of the quencher concentration. According to the Stern-Volmer plots, the fluorescence emission was quenched by both collisions (dynamic quenching) and complex formation (static quenching) with the same quencher but the effect of static quenching was larger than that of dynamic quenching. Large static and dynamic quenching constants for both OFL and FLU support significant ion-dipole and orbital-orbital interactions between fluorophore and quencher. For both molecules, the static and dynamic quenching constants by $Cu^{2+}$ were the largest among all the metal quenchers examined in this study. In addition, both the static and dynamic quenching mechanisms by $Cu^{2+}$ were somewhat different from the quenching caused by other metals. Between $Ni^{2+}$ and FLU, a different form of chemical interaction was observed compared with the interaction by other metals. The change in the absorption spectra as a result of the addition of a quencher provided information on static quenching. With all these metals, the static quenching constant of FLU was larger than those of OFL. The fluorescence of OFL was quite insensitive to both the dynamic and static quenching compared with FLU. This property of OFL can be explained by the twisted intramolecular charge transfer in the excited state.

  • The development of time-frequency analysis techniques allow astronomers to successfully deal with the non-stationary time series that originate from unstable physical mechanisms. We applied a recently developed time-frequency analysis method, the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT), to two non-stationary phenomena: the superorbital modulation in the high-mass X-ray binary SMC X-1 and the quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of the AGN RE J1034+396. From the analysis of SMC X-1, we obtained a Hilbert spectrum that shows more detailed information in both the time and frequency domains. Then, a phase-resolved analysis of both the spectra and the orbital profiles was presented. From the spectral analysis, we noticed that the iron line production is dominated by different regions of this binary system in different superorbital phases. Furthermore, a pre-eclipse dip lying at orbital phase ~0:6-0:85 was discovered during the superorbital transition state. We further applied the HHT to analyze the QPO of RE J1034+396. From the Hilbert spectrum and the O-C analysis results, we suggest that it is better to divide the evolution of the QPO into three epochs according to their different periodicities. The correlations between the QPO periods and corresponding fluxes were also different in these three epochs. The change in periodicity and the relationships could be interpreted as the change in oscillation mode based on the diskoseismology model.

  • The alloying effects on the electronic structures of Zinc are investigated using the relativistic $DV-X{\alpha}molecular$ orbital method in order to obtain useful information for alloy design. A new parameter which is the d obital energy level(Md) and the bonder order(Bo) of alloying elements in Zinc was introduced and used for prediction of the mechanical properties. The Md correlated with the atomic radius and the electronegativity of elements. The Bo is a measure of the strength of the covalent bond between M and X atoms. First-principles calculations of electronic structures were performed with a series of models composed of a MZn18 cluster and the electronic states were calculated by the discrete variational- $X{\alpha}method$ by using the program code SCAT. The central Zinc atom(M) in the cluster was replaced by various alloying elements. In this study energy level structures of pure Zinc and alloyed Zinc were calculated. From calculated results of energy level structures in MZn18 cluster, We found Md and Bo values for various elements of Zn. In this work, Md and Bo values correlated to the tensile strength for the Zn. These results will give some guide to design of zinc based alloys for high temperature applications and it is possible the excellent alloys design.

  • Purpose: The survival of organisms critically depends on avoidance responses to life-threatening stimuli. Information about dangerous situations needs to be remembered to produce defensive behavior. To investigate underlying brain regions to process information of danger, manganese-enhanced MRI (MEMRI) was used in olfactory fear-conditioned rats. Materials and Methods: Fear conditioning was conducted in male Sprague-Dawley rats. The animals received nasal injections of manganese chloride solution to monitor brain activation for olfactory information processing. Twenty-four hours after manganese injection, rats were exposed to electric foot shocks with odor cue for one hour. Control rats were exposed to the same odor cue without foot shocks. Forty-eight hours after the conditioning, rats were anesthetized and their brains were scanned with 9.4T MRI. Acquired images were processed and statistical analyses were performed using AFNI. Results: Manganese injection enhanced brain areas involved in olfactory information pathways in T1 weighted images. Rats that received foot shocks showed higher brain activation in the central nucleus of the amygdala, septum, primary motor cortex, and preoptic area. In contrast, control rats displayed greater signals in the orbital cortex and nucleus accumbens. Conclusion: Nasal delivery of manganese solution enhanced olfactory signal pathways in rats. Odor cue paired with foot shocks activated amygdala, the central brain region in fear, and related brain circuits. Use of MEMRI in fear conditioning provides a reliable monitoring technique of brain activation for fear learning.

  • The screening of various molecular descriptors for predicting carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic activities of chlorinated aliphatic compounds as drinking water disinfection byproducts (DBPs) has been investigated for the application of quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR). The present work embodies the study of relationship between molecular descriptors and toxicity parameters of the genotoxicity endpoints for the screening of relevant molecular descriptors. The toxicity Indices for 29 compounds constituting the testing set were computed by the PASS program and active values were chosen. We investigate feasibility of screening descriptors and of their applications among different genotoxic endpoints. The correlation to teratogenicity of all 29 compounds was significantly improved when the same analysis was done with 20 alkanes only without alkene compounds. The HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) energy and number of Cl parameters were dominantly contributed.

  • Admittance Spectroscopic analysis was applied to study the effect of LiF buffer layer and to model the equivalent circuit for poly(2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV)-based polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs) with the LiF cathode buffer layer. The single layer device with ITO/MEH-PPV/Al structure can be modeled as a simple parallel combination of resistor and capacitor. Insertion of a LiF layer at the Al/MEH-PPV interface shifts the highest occupied molecular orbital level and the vacuum level of the MEH-PPV layer as a result the barrier height for electron injection at the Al/MEH-PPV interface is reduced. The admittance spectroscopy measurement of the devices with the LiF cathode buffer layer shows reduction in contact resistance ($R_c$), parallel resistance ($R_p$) and increment in parallel capacitance ($C_p$).

  • Signals of the short wave part of centimetre, millimetre and optic wave length ranges are being broadly used in the communication, location and remote sensing systems with space channels. In this case the presence of discrete non-uniform mediums like orbital debris, space dust and other discrete formations in the propagation channel may have substantial influence upon the characteristics of wave processes. and thus upon the data system quality. Mathematical models for studying the discrete non-uniform mediums effect on the characteristics of electromagnetic wave propagation are analyzed in this paper.

  • In early 2004, KARI developed 5ft S-Band TT&C antenna for especially KOMPSAT-2 operation in LEOP phase. This paper shows system features of 5ft S-Band antenna and its test result with KOMPSAT-l. Tracking test, command uplink test and telemetry downlink test were performed. Through tests, 5ft antenna was verified to be operational in uplink and downlink with KOMPSAT series. Due to its inherent wide 3dB beam-width of about 7deg at S-Band, this antenna system can be used very effectively even though orbital information is less accurate like LEOP and spacecraft safe mode.
