Purpose: This study was performed to determine the relative frequency of positioning errors, to identify those errors directly responsible for diagnostically inadequate images, and to assess the quality of panoramic radiographs in a sample of records collected from a dental college. Materials and Methods: This study consisted of 1,782 panoramic radiographs obtained from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. The positioning errors of the radiographs were assessed and categorized into nine groups: the chin tipped high, chin tipped low, a slumped position, the patient positioned forward, the patient positioned backward, failure to position the tongue against the palate, patient movement during exposure, the head tilted, and the head turned to one side. The quality of the radiographs was further judged as being 'excellent', 'diagnostically acceptable', or 'unacceptable'. Results: Out of 1,782 radiographs, 196 (11%) were error free and 1,586 (89%) were present with positioning errors. The most common error observed was the failure to position the tongue against the palate (55.7%) and the least commonly experienced error was patient movement during exposure (1.6%). Only 11% of the radiographs were excellent, 64.1% were diagnostically acceptable, and 24.9% were unacceptable. Conclusion: The positioning errors found on panoramic radiographs were relatively common in our study. The quality of panoramic radiographs could be improved by careful attention to patient positioning.

Halitosis is primarily caused by oral conditions. In particular, volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) are mainly responsible for intra-oral halitosis. They are closely associated with the water temperature. In this study, we investigated the association between halitosis and water temperature for oral rinse (10℃, 30℃, and 45℃) using the BB checker and oral chroma. The application of BB checker on an empty stomach revealed that halitosis decreased with the use of tongue cleaners (p=0.001) and toothpastes (p=0.002). Furthermore, halitosis decreased after drinking milk (VSCs-induced food intake) (p=0.000). There were no significant differences in the results of oral chroma. Finally, we measured halitosis on an empty stomach and after drinking milk. The BB checker showed increased halitosis after drinking milk (p<0.001). The oral chroma showed decreased hydrogen sulfide (p<0.001) and increased methyl mercaptan (p=0.009) and dimethyl sulfide (p=0.002) after drinking milk. In conclusion, halitosis cannot be modulated using water temperature for oral rinse. The findings of this study cannot be generalized because of the small sample size and the limits of age and sex. Further studies are required to extensively analyze both sexes and various age groups, with more number of subjects.
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of patients showing fissured tongue (FT) with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). Methods: We reviewed the clinical records of 16 FT patients with BMS who visited the Oral Diseases Clinic of Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital from March 1, 2017 to February 28, 2018. The subjects were graded by FT classification and compared with each group on a numeral rating scale (NRS) of tongue pain, proportion of coated tongue, unstimulated salivary flow rate (USFR), Ryodoraku, and heart rate variability (HRV) results. Results: FT grade had no significant correlation with NRS of tongue pain and USFR. FT grade had a substantially significant positive correlation with BMI and LF/HF ratio in HRV. FT grade had a substantially significant negative correlation with proportion of coated tongue. The most frequent accompanying symptoms were xerostomia and insomnia. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that FT has no correlation with tongue pain in BMS. Rather, FT seems to correlate with sympathetic function acceleration.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the association between low tongue position (LTP) and the volume and dimensions of the nasopharyngeal, retropalatal, retroglossal, and hypopharyngeal segments of the upper airway. Methods: A total of 194 subjects, including 91 males and 103 females were divided into a resting tongue position (RTP) group and a LTP group according to their tongue position. Subjects in the LTP group were divided into four subgroups (Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4) according to the intraoral space volume. The 3D slicer software was used to measure the volume and minimum and average cross-sectional areas of each group. Airway differences between the RTP and LTP groups were analyzed to explore the association between tongue position and the upper airway. Results: No significant differences were found in the airway dimensions between the RTP and LTP groups. For both retropalatal and retroglossal segments, the volume and average cross-sectional area were significantly greater in the patients with extremely low tongue position. Regression analysis showed that the retroglossal airway dimensions were positively correlated with the intraoral space volume and negatively correlated with A point-nasion-B point and palatal plane to mandibular plane. Males generally had larger retroglossal and hypopharyngeal airways than females. Conclusions: Tongue position did not significantly influence upper airway volume or dimensions, except in the extremely LTP subgroup.
Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a premalignant condition characterized by juxtaepithelial fibrosis of the oral cavity. The clinical manifestations include burning sensation to spicy food, blanched oral mucosa with palpable fibrous bands, trismus, depapillation of tongue, and dry mouth. As OSF is predominantly seen in people of the Indian subcontinent, cases of this disease have been rarely reported in South Korea. We present a case of OSF in a Sri Lankan man living in South Korea and emphasize the importance of enhancing knowledge of this disease while the number of immigrants is increasing.
The purpose of this article is reviewed the historical background and development of oral care devices in the ancient civilization. Through an evolutional process of oral care devices, the prevalence of periodontal diseases and dental caries has revealed decreasing tendency. Because of the changing the role of the toothbrush, the name of brush should be alter from toothbrush to oral brush. Recent we can apply toothbrush to tongue cleaner to diminish the oral breathe odor. Selection of the toothbrush for fittable for each and every person is the one of important point to maintain the oral hygiene. including check-up the oral hygiene status after toothbrush with disclosing solution. This review of literature suggest that the most important way to maintain the oral health shoul be included the selection of proper toothbrush for each person and confirmation of result of toothbrush in oral cavity after had learned tooth brush instruction from professional person.
Intraoral prosthesis (Palatal Augmentation Prosthesis, PAP) may be used to augment swallowing function in patients with dysphagia. PAP can be used to recontour the dimensions of hard palate to fit the tongue following removal of oral cancer. Use of PAP can significantly improve the patient's ability to use the tongue to propel the bolus through the pharynx. The aim of this study is to show the effects of PAP through videofluoroscope in patients with dysphagia. The results were as follows: 1. A decrease in pharyngeal transit time was detected wearing with PAP. 2. Pharyngeal cross area was decreased wearing with PAP. 3. The results indicated PAP may effectively help lingual movement in patients with dysphagia.
The ultimate goal of cleft palate repair is to achieve an intact palate with the separation of the oral and nasal cavities. However, some patients develop an oronasal fistula in the secondary palate after palatoplasty. Postoperatively, a secondary palatal oronasal fistula may develop, leading to functional problems. In this study, we describe a patient with recurrent oronasal fistula and alveolar cleft with multiple failed previous reconstructions at another clinic. The oronasal fistula and alveolar cleft were repaired using a tongue flap and an iliac bone graft, respectively. The patient demonstrated excellent clinical progress with no recurrence of the oronasal fistula at the 1-year follow-up.

Preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy using cisplatin and 5-FU is generally given in oral and maxillofacial cancer. At tissue level both inflammation and fibrosis occur after chemotherapy. The cellular changes mimic those of a granulating wound, with activated macrophages and fibroblasts replacing the malignant cells as they are erradicated. Stromal cells, together with extracellular matrix components, provide the microenvironment that is pivotal for tumor cell growth, invasion, and metastatic progression. Vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF), an important regulator of angiogenesis in cancer, induces mitogenesis of vascular endothelial cells, and vascular permeabilization and microvessel formation in a tumor are associated with tumor nutrition and oxygenation. Also, they are associated with chemotherapeutic drug delivery. Oxygen delivery to tumor appears to rely on a network of microvessels, On the other hand, the tumor microvessel is clearly an important factor in chemotherapeutic drug delivery to cancer cells, and the efficacy of drug delivery can be high in richly vascularized tumors. So, this study was conducted to evaluate the effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on microvessel density from 11 patients with tongue cancers. Our results showed that neoadjuvant chemotherapy was seemed to decrease VEGF expression in tumor cells, however, it did not significantly alter VEGF expression in tumor-associated macrophages. Also, Neoadjuvant chemotherapy had little effect on the microvessel density using CD34, and tumor-associated macrophage level using CD68. Thus, tumorassociated macrophages seem to be the key factor associated with the maintenance of microvessel density after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in tongue cancer.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC) is the sixth most common cancer among men in the developed world affecting the tongue, pharynx, larynx and oral cavity. HNSCC is thought to represent a multistep process whereby carcinogen exposure leads to genetic instability in the tissue and accumulation of specific genetic events, which result in dysregulation of proliferation, differentiation, and cell loss and the acquisition of invasive capacity. Despite therapeutic and diagnostic progress in oncology during the past decades, the prognosis of HNSCC remains poor. Thus it seems that finding a biological tumor markers which will increase the early diagnosis and treatment monitoring rates, is of paramount importance in respect to improving prognosis. In an effort to identify gene expression signatures that may serve as biomarkers, this study several genes were selected, such as H3,3A, S100A7, UCHL1, GSTP1, PAI-2, PLK, TGF${\beta}$1 and bFGF, and used 7 HNSCC cell lines that were established various anatomical sites, and also 17 other cancer cell lines were used for control group using real-time quantitative RT-PCR and immunocytochemical analysis with a monoclonal antibody. In this study, S100A7 showed a clearly restricted occurrence in tongue originated cell line, and GSTP1 expression level in the pharynx originated cell line was very increased, relative to corresponding other cell lines. These results suggest that S100A7 and GSTP1 genes' expression can occur during tongue and pharynx originated head and neck tumorigenesis and that genetic change is an important driving force in the carcinogenesis process. This data indicate that S100A7 and GSTP1 expression pattern in HNSCC reflect both diagnostic clue and biological marker. And this is provides a foundation for the development of site-specific diagnostic strategies and treatments for HNSCC.
