Data of 1,866 older adults (Mean age 69.5 years) were analyzed with hierarchical logistic regression analyses with IBM SPSS 23.0. Over 87.7% of the subjects rated their oral health as fair or poor. Women and less educated participants more likely to report their perceived oral health as poor (p<.05). Older participants who rated their general health positively were more likely to rate their oral health as good (F=19.04, p<.001). Elders who had bad perceived health (OR: 2.86, 95% CI: 1.5~5.5), had carries in permanent teeth (OR: 2.68, 95% CI: 1.67~4.32) and anxiety or depression (OR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.42~2.57) had negative oral health perception after controlling for covariates. • The purpose of this study is to find out potential factors associated with the quality of life in South Korean senior people, on the basis of their oral health, so that it may provide basic reference materials in developing and assessing national policies for improving the quality of life in senior people. The data of 3,882 senior citizens who were at the Western age of 65 and up and got a dental checkup were selected from the first-, second- and third-year raw data of the 4th National Health and Nutrition Survey that were conducted from July 2007 to December 2009. And the statistical package SPSS 19.0 was employed to analyze the selected data. The findings of the study were as follows: The senior citizens whose remaining tooth was larger in number and who didn't need partial or full denture lead a better quality of life. Therefore, dental loss without any prosthetic appliance has significant negative effects on the quality of life in senior people, so it is urgently demanded to try to increase the number of remaining teeth and apply dental prosthesis to senior people for recovery of their oral health.

Methods: Studies on quality of life related to oral health among Korean elderly adults were selected as targets, and literature published in Korean journals until January 10, 2019, was examined. A total of 179 papers were reviewed using RISS, KISS, eArticle, and DBpia, and 17 papers meeting the final conditions were selected for analysis. Factors were categorized with publication year, sample size, gender, and statistical analysis as main variables. Relevant factors and effect sizes were then encoded, and the values of correlation coefficients and correlation effect sizes were coded. Results: After classifying the factors affecting OHRQoL among elderly adults according to common characteristics, four studies related to food and diet, five studies related to xerostomia, and four studies related to dentures and denture satisfaction were found to be related. Conclusions: Overall, various factors affected OHRQoL among elderly adults. Therefore, oral health among elderly adults must be developed and managed considering the various factors related to OHRQoL.

  • The present study aimed to examine the influence of mental health factors on oral health factors using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). A total of 1,548 elderly individuals aged over 65 years who completed the screening and health questionnaire were selected as the final study participants. The psychological health factors related to perceived oral health status were depression and stress when the gender was controlled, and in terms of gender, both elderly male and female individuals were stressed and depressed. These results suggested that the psychological health of elderly individuals negatively affects not only perceived oral health but also the quality of life. In addition, the psychological health of the elderly individuals should be systematically managed along with oral health care and overall health care and lifestyle. If a comprehensive health management system is available for low-income groups or an elderly person living alone, it should positively affect and improve the quality of life of elderly individuals.
