Objectives: In this study 54,848 people were selected as participants to investigate the relationship between oral health factors and eating habits education experiences of adolescents using raw data from the 17th (2021) online survey on adolescent health behavior. Methods: Data were collected using the IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0 statistical program was used. A multi-sample chi-square test was performed on the dietary education experience according to the general characteristics of the subjects. Logistic regression analysis was performed on factors affecting the eating habits education experience. Results: Eating breakfast and consuming fruits was more frequent among eating habits (p<0.001). Regarding factors influencing dietary habits education, in the case of eating habits education experience, sealant was 1.23 times higher (p<0.001), and tingling & throbbing were 0.93 times lower (p<0.01). Conclusions: Educating adolescents on correct eating habits is related to oral health, hence a school based oral health education program related to eating habits is necessary for adolescents.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting oral health impact profile. Methods: Subjects included elderly in the metropolitan areas of the cities of Daegu and Gyeong-buk. Statistical analysis was done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 19.0 for Windows. We determined frequencies and percentage, calculating means, and standard deviations, and determining statistical significance using T-tests, analysis of variance, multiple regression analysis. Results: The results of multiple regression analysis between the oral health impact profile and the related factors indicated that Occupation, Economic status are the major component oral health impact profile in general characteristics and the Impediment of oral health promotion behavior is the major component that contribute the oral health impact profile in oral health belief. Conclusion: The comprehensive and reliable research which measures oral health impact profile of elderly is necessary.
Background: Among the health problems in old age, oral health is closely related to nutrition intake and digestion, so although it is an important factor in the well-being of the elderly along with general health, studies examining the relationship between oral health-related factors and grip strength of the elderly are insufficient. Therefore, this study intends to examine the relationship between oral health-related factors and grip strength, which are closely related to the general health of the elderly. Methods: This study used data from the 7th period of Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey (2016~2018) approved by the Research Ethics Review Committee of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Complex sample frequency analysis and descriptive statistics were performed, and general linear model analysis was performed to confirm the relationship between demographic characteristics, oral health -related factors and grip strength. The statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 23.0, and the significance test was based on type I error level of 0.05. Results: Grip strength was higher in the case of no discomfort than in the case of discomfort in relation to mastication discomfort and grip strength (B=0.927, p<0.001). In addition, the grip strength was decreased by 1.348 times when not using dental floss (p<0.001) and when not using mouth wash was 1.480 times (p<0.001). Conclusion: In this study, in the relationship between oral health-related factors and grip strength, grip strength was found to be high in the absence of mastication discomfort. and in the case of using dental floss and mouthwash the elderly showed high grip strength. Therefore, it is suggested to present a lifestyle to improve hand function and grip strength in the elderly and develop a program to increase grip strength and provide them at the same time during oral health education.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in oral health-related quality of life among elderly people aged over 65 years, in terms of physical, mental and oral health status and to analyze factors affecting their oral health-related quality of life. Methods: From May 9 to June 23, 2017, we randomly visited aged-care community centers in the metropolitan area, and recruited 222 elderly, aged 65 or older. First, each participant completed a questionnaire consisting of 4 general items: 1 systematic disease, and 3 subjective oral conditions. Afterwards, the researchers interviewed the participants to assess their mental status, using MMSE-DS and recorded the responses. Finally, an oral examination was performed to determine the number of remaining teeth. The average oral health-related quality of life according to each characteristic was analyzed by t-test and ANOVA. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis and Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis were used to analyze the correlations between factors and the factors affecting oral health-related quality of life. Results: The mean oral health-related quality of life was 4.15. Participants with 20 or more remaining teeth demonstrated better oral health-related quality of life than those with 19 or less teeth. Higher oral health-related quality of life was also found among elderly without gingival bleeding, self-reported halitosis and dry mouth. In addition, positive correlation with the number of remaining teeth and negative correlation with gingival bleeding, self-reported halitosis and dry mouth, were noted. Finally, the results of the hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that remaining teeth, gingival bleeding, self-reported halitosis and education were influential factors in determining the oral health-related quality of life among the elderly. Conclusions: The results of this study confirmed the necessity of better policy support, and the importance of implementing delivered, elderly-centered oral health education program by professionals to prevent tooth loss and manage periodontal diseases.
The present study aimed to examine the influence of mental health factors on oral health factors using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). A total of 1,548 elderly individuals aged over 65 years who completed the screening and health questionnaire were selected as the final study participants. The psychological health factors related to perceived oral health status were depression and stress when the gender was controlled, and in terms of gender, both elderly male and female individuals were stressed and depressed. These results suggested that the psychological health of elderly individuals negatively affects not only perceived oral health but also the quality of life. In addition, the psychological health of the elderly individuals should be systematically managed along with oral health care and overall health care and lifestyle. If a comprehensive health management system is available for low-income groups or an elderly person living alone, it should positively affect and improve the quality of life of elderly individuals.
Objectives: Grip strength is a measure for assessing overall muscle strength, muscle mass, and nutritional status, and is a useful tool for early examination of a person's general health. Thus, this study analyzed the association between oral health-related factors and grip strength, using the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data. Methods: Data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS version 25.0 (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA) software with a complex sampling analysis of stratified and clustered variables, all with weighted values, applied for every analysis conducted. From the 6th KNHANES data, a total of 26,101 people were selected as the study population. A complex sample generalized linear model analysis was performed for participants' sociodemographic characteristics, health status, use of oral care products, and factors such as adult mastication and speaking habits. Results: Grip strength was found to be higher among men compared to women. Grip strength was the highest in the 20-39 year old group. Furthermore, grip strength was statistically significantly higher among married and employed individuals, and in the right hand (p<0.001). Grip strength was statistically significantly higher among people who perceived themselves to have good health and among those who did not have health-related problems in the past two weeks (p<0.001). It was also higher among those who used interdental brushes and electronic toothbrushes (p<0.001), but decreased with greater discomfort in mastication and speaking among adults (p<0.05). Conclusions: Grip strength was found to be associated with oral health-related factors and therefore, these could be helpful tools in evaluating both general and subjective health statuses. In general, oral care products are small in size with oral care involving the use of hands and certain precise motions and actions to remove foreign substances in the oral cavity. As shown in the findings, grip strength declines with increased age and as a result, the use of oral care products should be strongly recommended in order to promote better general health.
Purpose: This study was conducted to provide basic data for a health promotion program by analyzing the effects of high school students' mental health-related factors on oral symptom experiences. Methods: This study included 24,833 high school students who participated in the screening and health survey in the "17th (2021) Adolescent Health Behavior Survey." SPSS software (SPSS Statistics ver. 21.0; IBM) was used for statistical analysis. Multiple sample logistic regression analysis was performed. The significance level was set to 0.05. Results: The result of the analysis on the effect of mental health revealed that oral symptom experience was low in students without depression and suicidal thoughts. Oral symptom experience was high in students with stress perception. Additionally, the experience of oral symptoms was low when there was sufficient subjective sleep. Conclusion: Therefore, it is necessary to develop a customized oral health education program for early detection of oral symptoms and oral health promotion in high school students. Furthermore, it suggests the need for strategies and continuous oral health guidance to practice proper oral health habits to maintain healthy oral conditions.
The Status of oral health and dental prosthetic treatment in Daegu and Gyoung Buk area was examined. To investigate the correlation between factors such as demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and status of oral health and knowledge about oral preventive measures, a survey was performed. After analyzing the effects of knowledge levels about dental prosthetic treatment on the oral health status and preventive measures, following results were obtained. A Total of 625 people participated in the survey for three months from October 2007 to January 2008. The responses from the survey were then analyzed to assess whether those with less knowledge of preventive measures tended to have more dental prosthetic work. Of those that took part in the survey: ${\cdot}$ 30.2% were in their twenties ${\cdot}$ 56.2% were married ${\cdot}$ 51.4% of respondents had at least a college degree ${\cdot}$ 42.4% had monthly incomes below one million Won ${\cdot}$ 24.3% were students ${\cdot}$ 55.8% were from urban areas After studying the relationship between oral health and various demographics, researchers concluded that respondents' sex, income, job and place of residence had no effect on the overall status of their oral health. However, those that were divorcees or widows (1.95${_+}/{_-}$ 0.32), over the age of 70 (1.67${_+}/{_-}$0.31), or had little education (0.82${_+}/{_-}$0.28), all demonstrated a statistically significant effect on their oral health with a significance level of 0.05.Cross analysis revealed a p-value of 0.000. The correlation between knowledge of oral preventive measures and other factors was examined. No difference was found between men and women but people who were divorced or lost their spouse, people over the age of 60, and people with no education, the results of knowledge of oral preventive measure was poor as 1.74$\pm$0.44, 1.85$\pm$0.40, 1.85$\pm$0.44,and 1.60$\pm$0.47 separately. Cross analysis showed that p-value was 0.000 and correlation between knowledge of oral preventive measures and those factors were statistically significant at significance level of 0.05. The status of dental prosthetic treatment was investigated. Women, people with higher income, and married people had more dental prosthetic treatment and it was related to education, income, residential area, and the status of dental prosthetic treatment. Therefore, a preventive program for oral health care needs to be developed in advanced countries. Government intervention such as enacting an oral health initiative or dental insurance that covers prosthetic treatments is urgently needed.
Objectives: The main purpose of this study was to examine factors contributing the quality of life related to oral heath such as level of oral health knowledge, subjective knowledge on oral health, awareness of oral health and OHIP-14, and furthermore to analyze any relations among these factors. Methods: The questionnaire survey was carried out on a convenience sample of 230 middle school students at the selected middle school in Chungcheongnam-do. T-test and one-way ANOVA and correlation test were conducted over the collected datas using SPSS 12.0(SPSS 12.0 KOR for Windows, SPSS Inc, Chicago, USA). Results: The results of the study are as follows: 1. 6.38 was average score for oral health knowledge and 10.0 was the maximum. Subjective oral health awareness scored of average 2.99 with maximum of 5.0. OHIP-14 corresponded to average 4.30 and maximum 5.0. 2. Different level of oral heath knowledge was resulted from that of education, which means the greater level of oral health knowledge indicated greater awareness of oral health. 3. OHIP-14 was higher for those who lived with their parents than those who in did not(P=0.012). 4. There exhibits a proportional relationship between subjective awareness of oral health and OHIP-14(r=0.297). Conclusion: It was found that subjective awareness of oral health partially influences to OHIP-14. In other words, subjective awareness of oral health has an effect on the quality of life related to oral health. Hence, there needs more effort on oral health education and oral disorder prevention activities in order to improve subjective awareness of oral health.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the influencing factors of oral health behavior and oral health awareness of university students by assessing oral health practice. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was completed by 500 university students in Jeonbuk from June 2 to 15, 2014. Except ten incomplete answers, 490 data were analyzed. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, subjective oral health status (8 items), oral health knowledge (18 items), and oral health practice (22 items) by Likert 5 point scale. Results: Oral health behavior had a significant effect on smoking status (${\beta}=-0.200$, p<0.001), oral health knowledge (${\beta}=-0.235$, p<0.001), dietary control practice (${\beta}=-0.123$, p<0.05), and daily toothbrushing frequency (${\beta}=-0.240$, p<0.001). With respect to factors influencing oral health knowledge, significant effect was found in oral health behavior (${\beta}=0.258$, p<0.001), dietary control awareness (${\beta}=0.208$, p<0.001), and dietary control practice (${\beta}=-0.136$, p<0.05). Conclusions: Oral health knowledge of university students is an important factor to cause a change in the behavior of oral health practice. Consequently, oral health education is essential to university students. In order to help improve the oral health, more customized and organized oral health programs will be necessary and it will encourage changes in university students oral health practices.
