  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate trends of oral health behaviors in Korean adolescents. Methods: From the 2005 to 2017 Korea Youth Risk Behavior web-based Survey (KYRBS) Secondary Data (study to 748,461). Independent variables were the year, gender, grade, and living area. Dependent variables were the rate of tooth-brushing after lunch, scaling, use of sealant, and oral health education within 1 year. Chi-squire tests were used to estimate the rate of oral health behaviors and trends. In addition, multiple logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between socio-economic characteristics and oral health behaviors. The analyses were conducted using IBM SPSS statistics 21 (version 21.0, IBM Corporation, New York, NY, USA). Results: The rate of tooth-brushing after lunch and use of sealant have significantly increased every year. Oral health behaviors were significantly associated with socio-economic characteristics. The rate of oral health education was higher among males than females, which was in contrast to other oral health behaviors. The scores for tooth-brushing after lunch, use of sealant, and scaling in females were 2.33 (95% CI; 2.27-2.40), 1.31 (95% CI; 1.29-1.33), and 1.20 (95% CI; 1.18-1.22), which were higher than those in males. The score for use of sealant in the highest household economy group was 1.13 (95% CI; 1.10-1.17), which was higher than the lowest economy group. Conclusions: We found positive trends of oral health behaviors in Korean adolescents.

Methods: The present study utilized data from the 15th (2019) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey data, which included a total of 57,303 adolescents for analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using PASW Statistics 21.0. The significance level for significance was set at 0.05. Results: The rate of toothbrushing before sleeping was 1.152 times higher in the group that performed muscle strengthening exercises more than 3 times a week than in the group that did not (p < 0.001). The rate of use of oral hygiene products was 1.246 times higher in the group that performed physical activity for 60 min or more every day than in the group that did not, and 1.207 times higher in the group that performed muscle strength exercise at least 3 times a week than in the group that did not (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Adolescents who engaged in physical activities had a high rate of practice for some oral health behaviors.

  • Objectives: To provide basic data for oral health policy by identifying the differences in oral health behaviors and conditions among middle-aged people in their 40s and 50s and relating these to their health-related quality of life, and to identify factors affecting health-related quality of life. Methods: In this study, secondary data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used. Data were gathered from 8,127 participants, of which 2,353 were middle-aged (40-59 years old). Covariance analysis was performed using a complex sample general linear model to investigate the changes in the subjects' health-related quality of life (EQ-5D) according to their general characteristics, oral health behaviors, and oral health status. Results: Oral health behavior was not significantly related to health-related quality of life. In contrast, a higher oral health status (chewing function) was associated with better health-related quality of life. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study suggested a close relationship between oral health status (chewing function) and health-related quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize the importance of oral health in improving the health-related quality of life of middle-aged people in their 40s and 50s, as well as in informing oral health policies and preventive measures for individuals and communities.
