  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factors related to xerostomia in patients with systemic diseases, and the results were analyzed through t-test, ANOVA, and multiple linear regression analysis. There were 62 respondents (56.9%) who reported dry mouth and the season of the most severe dry mouth was reported to be the highest during winter. According to the analysis made in the relationship of xerostomia with the awareness of general health and health behavior, the group that understood their own health poorly, had more than two kinds of diseases, and had been administered more than two kinds of daily medication showed higher xerostomia. Also, those who experienced desperation, had high dryness in other parts of the body, and heavy snoring were more aware of xerostomia (p<0.05). According to the analysis made in the relationship between xerostomia and awareness of oral health state, the group that understood their oral health poorly and had pain in the oral mucous membrane and halitosis was more aware of xerostomia (p<0.05). According to the analysis made in the relationship between quality of life and xerostomia, the group that showed high level of problem in daily living and stress and were self-conscious and felt tense due to halitosis reported more xerostomia (p<0.05). Finally, xerostomia was most correlated with consciousness of the eyes of others due to halitosis followed by the number of transferred systemic diseases and stress level. Based on such results, xerostomia was understood to be an obstacle in maintaining favorable social life and health. Since xerostomia was shown to be related to the number of transferred systemic diseases, the dental professions are asked to further improve their understanding not only on oral health but also systemic diseases. Therefore, these efforts are expected to prevent xerostomia and reduce various complications caused by xerostomia.

  • Chronic ultraviolet (UV) exposure is the major cause of photoaging that causes skin wrinkling, roughness, dryness, laxity, and pigmentation. Recently, increasing efforts are being made to understand the relationship between foods and skin health. Ginsenosides are present in ginseng (Ginseng Radix Rubra) extract, and are known to have biomedical properties, such as, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we investigated whether KTNG0345 prepared from red ginseng extracts delivered orally reduces skin wrinkling and ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced wrinkle formation in hairless mouse skin. KTNG0345 was administrated orally to the mice (5 times a week) during the period of UVB-irradiation (3 times a week) for 8 weeks at three different doses of 300 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg (w/v). UV doses were increased weekly by 1 MED (1MED = 75 $mJ/cm^2)$ up to 4 MED and then maintained at this level. After the 8-week administration period, it was found that orally administered KTNG0345 significantly inhibited UVB-induced wrinkle formation in a dose-dependent manner. Increases in skin thickness caused by UVB were prevented by KTNG0345. Moreover, it also significantly inhibited matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) -13 and MMP-9 expressional inductions by UVB. In addition, KTNG0345 was observed to prevent UVB-induced water loss of epidermis in hairless mouse skin. Our results demonstrate that orally administered KTNG0345 has anti-wrinkling effects in hairless mouse skin, and suggest that dietary red ginseng and herbal mixture may be considered a functional beauty food for preventing UVB-induced skin wrinkles.

  • This study was carried out in order to offer basic data for preventing halitosis by understanding about the factors related to self-awareness of halitosis and about the relationship with stress and compulsion targeting students for the Department of Dental Hygiene. As a result of research, the whole subjects were indicated to be 1.76 points for the mean in stress, 1.62 points for the mean in compulsion, and 1.84 points for the mean in self-awareness of halitosis. The group of feeling the tongue to be white and the inside of the mouth to be sticky in own symptom inside the mouth was indicated to be 2.02 points(p=0.000) for stress and 2.00 points(p=0.000) for self-awareness of halitosis. The group of often feeling a sense of oral dryness was indicated to be 2.23 points(p=0.000) for stress, 1.95 points(p=0.000) for compulsion, and 1.89 points(p=0.046) for self-awareness of halitosis. The self-awareness of halitosis stood at r=0.133 with compulsion, thereby having indicated slight positive correlation. Stress and compulsion showed high positive correlation with r=0.425. Accordingly, there is a need of infusing recognition through steady education as a dental hygienist who will have interest in emotional factor along with grasping diverse causes for halitosis, and who will be in charge of a future patients' halitosis.

  • An HPLC method was employed for the determination of ethambutol in human plasma. After addition of internal standard (IS, octylamine, $2\;{\mu}g/mL$) and alkalinization of the plasma with 5 M sodium hydroxide, the drug and IS were extracted into the mixture of chloroform and diethyl ether (40:60, v/v). Following a 15-min vortex-mixing and a 10min centrifugation, the organic phase was spiked with $100{\mu}L$ of phenylethylisocyanate $(2000{\mu}g/mL)$ for chemical derivatization, mixed for 5 min and evaporated to dryness under a stream of nitrogen. The residue was reconstituted with $100{\mu}L$ of mobile phase and $20{\mu}L$ was injected into C18 column with a mobile phase consisting of methanol:water (70:30, v/v). The samples were detected utilizing an ultraviolet detector at 200 nm. The method was specific and validated with a limit of $0.15\;{\mu}g/mL$. Intra- and inter-day precision and accuracy were acceptable for all quality control samples including the lower limit of quantification. The applicability of this method was demonstrated by analysis of human plasma after oral administration of a single 1200-mg dose to 20 healthy subjects. From the plasma ethambutol concentration vs. time curves, the mean AUC was $9.61{\pm}1.64\;{\mu}g{\cdot}hr/mL$ and Cmax of $2.68\;{\mu}g/mL$ reached 2.73 hr after administration. The mean biological half-life of ethambutol was $3.46{\pm}1.21$ hr. Based on the results, this simple and validated assay could readily be used in any pharmacokinetic studies using humans.
