  • Coda in the word-medial position plays an important role in acquisition of our speech. Accuracy of the coda in the word-medial position is important as a diagnostic indicator since it has a close relationship with degrees of disorder. Coda in the word-medial position only appears in condition of connecting two vowels and the sequence causes diverse phonological processes to happen. The coda in the word-medial position differs in production difficulty by the initial sound in the sequence. Accordingly, this study aims to examine the tendency of producing a coda in the word-medial position with consideration of an optional phonological process in spontaneous speech of three and four year old children. Data was collected from 24 children (four groups by age) without speech and language delay. The results of the study are as follows: 1) Sonorant coda in the word-medial position showed a high production frequency in manner of articulation, and alveolar in place of articulation. When the coda in the word-medial position is connected to an initial sound in the same place of articulation, it revealed a high frequency of production. 2) The coda in word-medial position followed by an initial alveolar stop revealed a high error rate. Error patterns showed regressive assimilation predominantly. 3) The order of difficulty that Children had producing codas in the word-medial position was $/k^{\neg}/$, $/p^{\neg}/$, /m/, /n/, /ŋ/ and /l/. Those results suggest that in targeting coda in the word-medial position for evaluation, we should consider optional phonological process as well as the following initial sound. Further studies would be necessary which codas in the word-medial position will be used for therapeutic purpose.

  • This paper presents the smart interacting multiple model (SIMM) using the concept of predicted point and maximum noise level. Maximum noise level means the largest value of the mere noises. We utilize the positional difference between measured point and predicted point as acceleration. Comparing this acceleration with the maximum noise level, we extract the acceleration to recognize the characteristics of the target. To estimate the acceleration, we propose an optional algorithm utilizing the proposed method and the Kalman filter (KF) selectively. Also, for increasing the effect of estimation, the weight given at each sub-filter of the interacting multiple model (IMM) structure is varying according to the rate of noise scale. All the procedures of the proposed algorithm can be implemented by an on-line system. Finally, an example is provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • In ad hoc networks, loss-based congestion window progression by the traditional means of duplicate ACKs and timeouts causes high network buffer utilization due to large bursts of data, thereby degrading network bandwidth utilization. Moreover, network-oriented feedbacks to handle route disconnection events may impair packet forwarding capability by adding to MAC layer congestion and also dissipate considerable network resources at reluctant intermediate nodes. Here, we propose a new TCP scheme that does not require the participation of intermediate nodes. It is a purely end-to-end scheme using TCP timestamps to deduce link conditions. It also eliminates spurious reductions of the transmission window in cases of timeouts and fast retransmits. The scheme incorporates a receiver-oriented rate controller (rater), and a congestion window delimiter for the 802.11 MAC protocol. In addition, the transient nature of medium availability due to medium contention during the connection time is addressed by a freezing timer (freezer) at the receiver, which freezes the sender whenever heavy contention is perceived. Finally, the sender-end is modified to comply with the receiver-end enhancements, as an optional deployment. Simulation studies show that our modification of TCP for ad hoc networks offers outstanding performance in terms of goodput, as well as throughput.

  • In the traditional use of conjoint analysis, in order to evaluate the relative importance of several elements composing a service, interviewed customers are asked to express their judgement about different scenarios (specific combinations of elements). In order to reduce the number of possible scenarios, design of experiments methodology is usually exploited. Previous experiences show that, even a limited number of proposed scenarios cause difficulty in answering for the interviewed customer if the scenarios differ for elements of very low interest to him/her. Consequently, a high rate of abandon of the interview has been observed. In this study it is assumed that a service can be decomposed in several improvable elements and/or enriched with new "optionals". In both cases, what under study is assumed to be a set of dichotomous attributes. For each of these attributes, its marginal contribution to customer satisfaction has to be modelled and estimated. To obtain the required information, an opportune questionnaire is proposed to a sample of interviewed customers. An interviewing procedure consisting in a customer driven design of scenarios is followed, starting from the full-optional scenario and eliminating one by one the less satisfying elements. For each interviewed customer, a ranking of attributes is so obtained. Then, by asking the interviewed customer to evaluate on a metric scale the scenarios he previously selected, a rating of attributes can also be obtained. A case study conducted in collaboration with a public transportation company is presented. Contrarily to previous experiences, the abandon rate proved extremely reduced.y reduced.

  • In this paper, we develop design procedures for carrier tracking loop for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems or other systems of blocked data. In such communication systems, phase error measurements are made infrequent enough to invalidate the traditional loop design methodology which is based on analog loop design. We analyze the degradation in the OFDM schemes caused by the tracking loop and show how the performance is dependent on the rms phase error, where we distinguished between the effect of the variance in the average phase over the symbol and the effect of the phase change over the symbol. We derive the optimal tracking loop including optional delay in the loop caused by processing time. Our solution is general and includes arbitrary phase noise apd additive noise spectrums. In order to guarantee a well behaved solution, we have to check the design against margin constraints subject to uncertainties. In case the optimal loop does not meet the required margin constraints subjected to uncertainties, it is shown how to apply a method taken from control theory to find a controller. Alternatively, if we restrict the solution to first or second order loops, we give a simple loop design procedure which may be sufficient in many cases. Extensions of the method are shown for using both pilot symbols and data symbols in the OFDM receiver for phase tracking. We compare our results to other methods commonly used in OFDM receivers and we show that a large improvement can be gained.

  • In this paper, we present a channel access mechanism, referred to as the enhanced mesh coordinated channel access (eMCCA) mechanism, for IEEE 802.11s-based wireless mesh networks. The current draft of IEEE 802.11s includes an optional medium access control (MAC), denoted as MCCA, which is designed to provide collision-free and guaranteed channel access during reserved periods. However, the MCCA mechanism fails to achieve the desired goal in the presence of contending non-MCCA nodes; this is because non-MCCA nodes are not aware of MCCA reservations and have equal access opportunities during reserved periods. We first present a probabilistic analysis that reveals the extent to which the performance of MCCA may be affected by contending non-MCCA nodes. We then propose eMCCA, which allows MCCA-enabled nodes to enjoy collision-free and guaranteed channel access during reserved periods by means of prioritized and preemptive access mechanisms. Finally, we evaluate the performance of eMCCA through extensive simulations under different network scenarios. The simulation results indicate that eMCCA outperforms other mechanisms in terms of success rate, network throughput, end-to-end delay, packet-loss rate, and mesh coordinated channel access opportunity-utilization.

  • Our luck is brute if we cannot choose or control it and, thus, we are not responsible for it. Our luck is optional if we can choose or control it and, thus, we are responsible for it. Egalitarian justice at least demands brute luck be fully neutralized. If, however, brute luck is not fully neutralized and possibly accumulated, what will happen to the Gini coefficients as a measure of inequality due to brute luck? By simulating brute luck under various combinations of the rate of accumulation and the level of, what I call, leximin-redistribution, I obtain the Gini coefficients for the distribution of the accumulated and, then, redistributed brute luck. The level of the leximin-redistribution determines the negative or positive relation between the rate of accumulation and the Gini coefficient. The minimum leximin-redistribution level that generates the negative relation between the rate of accumulation and the Gini coefficient, depends on the characteristics of the starting-point distribution of brute luck. The sooner the leximin-redistribution is ushered in, the lower the minimum level becomes. The so-called 'Growth First Redistribution Later' policy may hurt victims of brute bad luck.

  • The optional ingredient jasoja(Perillae semen) was adopted to improve Dongchimi in qualify during fermentation The final weight percentage of jasoja in Dongchimi was adjusted to 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, or 1.0% Per radish. Physicochemical characteristics were determined during fermentation for 45 days at 10$^{\circ}C$. As the fermentation of Dongchimi proceeded, the pH decreased with the increase of total acidity; however, the decreasing rate was slowed down by increasing the level of jasoja. The delayed pH drop of Dongchimi was limited only for the initial period of fermentation and the ultimate pH became almost comparable even for the 1% treatment. The total vitamin C content increased initially to a certain level depending on the level of jasoja, and then decreased later. Dongchimi with 0.5% jasoja contained the highest level of total vitamin C and reducing sugars. In case of 1% treatment, the typical pattern of an initial high content followed by a gradual decrease in reducing sugar was destroyed by a rapid fermentation at the later stage. Turbidity level, along with total solid contents of the liquid part of Dongchimi increased in all treatments as the fermentation proceeded although the extent was rather suppressed by jasoja. As a result of fermentation, the colorimetric lightness values decreased, with the intial increase followed by the decrease at a certain point in redness and yellowness and the increase in color difference values (ΔE). Overall, fermentation with 0.5% jasoja for 11 to 30 days appeared to improve the quality of Dongchimi.

  • This study focused on the investigation of objects and contents of environment-related chapters which were contained in the biology textbooks of middle school in the 5th curriculum, and in the 6th curriculum. As a result of objects analysis, cognitive domain such as the knowledge and information categories were allocated more than affective domain as skill, value and attitude, and behavior and participation. Compared with the 5th curriculum, the average-pages of environment-related chapters in the 6th curriculum were decreased. Environment-related chapters in the 6th curriculum also dealt negligibly with the real environmental problems in our country. Therefore the importance of the environment-related chapters of biology textbooks in the 6th curriculum was relatively deceased compared with that in the 5th curriculum. In considering the actual low optional rate of environment subject in middle school, it was thought that the reinforcing effect of environmental education can be hardly expected. Rather, the status of environment subject will grow weaker and weaker. Thus, in order to avoid the deterioration effect of its status and solve its problems, it is necessary to up-grade environment subject as obligatory course or needs strong reinforcement of environmental education.
