  • Background: The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a simple index of systemic inflammatory response, and has been shown to be a prognostic indicator in some types of cancer. Inflammation has been implicated in the initiation and progression of thyroid cancer. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of NLR with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and different benign thyroid pathologies like multinodular goiter (MNG) and lymphocytic thyroiditis (LT). Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the neutrophil, lymphocyte counts and NLR calculated from these parameters of 232 patients with histologically confirmed as multinodular goiter (group MNG) (n=70), lymphocytic thyroiditis (group LT) (n=97), LT with PTC (group LT-PTC) (n=25) and PTC (group PTC) (n=40). The optimal cut-off value for NLR was determined. Results: NLR level was significantly higher in groups LT-PTC and PTC as compared to groups MNG and LT (p<0.05). NLR of LT subgroups according to TSH levels were not different (p>0.05). When we grouped the patients as benign and malignant according to PTC presence, the optimum NLR cut-off point obtained from ROC analysis was 1.91 (sensitivity 89.0% and specificity 54.5%). Conclusions: Since NLR was significantly elevated in group LT-PTC and group PTC, NLR value may give an opinion as a potential marker in differentiation of benign and malign thyroid disorders. For this purpose a cut-off value of 1.91 for NLR may be accepted.

  • This paper describes the magnetic flux leakage(MFL) type non-destructive testing(NDT) system to detect the 3D defects in underground gas pipe. Magnetic systems with permanent magnets and yokes are analyzed by 3D non-lineal finite element method(FEM) with optimum design. In case of under-saturation of gas pipe, sensing signals are too weak to detect. In case of over-saturation, the changes of the sensing signals are too low to detect the defects sensitively. So, the operating points of the magnetic system are optimized to increase the changes of the MFL signals. The effects of the depth and size of the defects on the sensing signals are analyzed to define the range and resolution of the MFL sensors. To increase the sensor's sensitivity, the back-yoke sensors are introduced and tested.

  • [ $LaMeO_3$ ](Me = Cr, Co) powders were prepared using the polymeric precursor method. The effects of the chelating agent and the polymeric additive on the synthesis of the $LaMeO_3$ perovskite were studied. The samples were synthesized using ethylene glycol (EG) as the solvent, acetyl acetone (AcAc) as the chelating agent, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the polymer additive. The thermal decomposition behavior of the precursor powder was characterized using a thermal analysis (TG-DTA). The crystallization and particle sizes of the $LaMeO_3$ powders were investigated via powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and particle size analyzer, respectively. The as-prepared precursor primarily has $LaMeO_3$ at the optimum condition, i.e. for a molar ratio of both metal-source (a : a) : EG (80a : 80a) : AcAc (8a) inclusive of 1 wt% PVP. When the as-prepared precursor was calcined at $700^{\circ}C$, only a single phase was observed to correspond with the orthorhombic structure of $LaCrO_3$ and the rhombohedral structure of $LaCoO_3$. A solid-electrolyte impedance-metric sensor device composed of $Li_{1.5}Al_{0.5}Ti_{1.5}(PO_4)_3$ as a transducer and $LaMeO_3$ as a receptor has been systematically investigated for the detection of NOx in the range of 20 to 250 ppm at $400^{\circ}C$. The sensor responses were able to divide the component between resistance and capacitance. The impedance-metric sensor for the NO showed higher sensitivity compared with $NO_2$. The responses of the impedance-metric sensor device showed dependence on each value of the NOx concentration.

  • In the modem power distribution systems, there are lots of zero-phase current harmonics in the neutral power line due to much usages of the controlled switching devices, various semiconductor power converting systems, OA(Office Automation) equipments, PC etc. In order to minimize the current harmonics a zero-phase neutral line current eliminating reactor (NHER) is designed and analyzed its performance using the finite element program. For the design of NHER a program is developed using C++ program. To verify the program a case model(380/220[V], 200[A]) is designed and analyzed by the developed program. As the results of the optimal design, the core loss is reduced by 26[%] with eliminating of the current harmonics. Especially the ninth harmonics is much reduced as compared with the others. When the design of NHER is adapted to the load of the power system, the eliminating effect and efficiency of the device will be much better

  • The standard data link layer encryption provided by CCSDS has a structure that encodes HDLC frame into it using an AES algorithm. However, CCSDS is standard method has a structure in which the receiving side cannot request a re-activation when noise interference occurs over an unstable channel. SES Alarmed has a structure that enables the receiving side to additionally detect errors and perform re-activation requests in an operational structure similar to that of link encryption in CCSDS. The SES Alarmed related paper was intended to identify the optimum range of thresholds and identify data corruption due to channel noise. In this paper, the focus was on reducing the re-activation process if the HDLC frame, excluding the password Sync code, consistently exceeds any threshold levels. The HDLC frame order was changed and the results of using SES Alarmed were proposed and compared.

  • This study was undertaken for the production capacity expansion and energy saving through entire process simulation and optimization for the commercial process of manufacturing monoethylene glycol as a staple from ethylene oxide. Aspen $Plus^{TM}$(ver. 2006) was employed in the simulation and optimization work. The multicomponent vapor-liquid equilibria involved in the process were calculated using the NRTL-RK equation. As for the binary interaction parameters required for a total of 91 binary systems, those for 8 systems were self-supplied by the simulator, those for 28 systems were estimated through regression of the VLE data in the literature, and the remainder were estimated with the estimation system built in the simulator. Subsequent to ascertaining the accuracy of the generated parameters through comparison between actual and simulated process data, sensitive variables highly affecting the process were searched and selected using sensitivity analysis tool in the simulator. The optimum operating conditions minimizing the total heat duty of the process were investigated using the optimization tool based on the successive quadratic programming in the simulator.

  • This study presents a design method for three-span continuous preflex composite girder bridges (3S-PCB) which imposes prestresses in the negative moment region by lifting or lowering interior supports and the design method is automated by a computer program which incorporates optimal design procedure. The objective function for the design of 3S-PCB minimizes the cost of construction materials and the constraint functions represent the limited dimensions of the design section and the allowable stress for each structural member as given in the specifications. Optimal design procedure used in this study is a modification of existing sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT), a numerical analyses procedure for two-span continuous preflex composite bridges. The optimized design sections determined for each span length are compared with those of simple preflex composite beams (SPCB) and the optimal girder depth is determined by defining the relationship between girder depth and construction material costs.

  • The blade of motor grader is used for scattering and leveling the aggregates on the foundation of road construction site. The paper performed a design improvement research of the blade part to enhance the working efficiency of motor graders. The scattering works of aggregates by blade driving were simulated by DEM (discrete element method) of a dynamic code. The four design parameters were selected and a specific leveling scenario for the simulation was determined. The nine blade models were numerically experimented, and the sensitivity of each factors was analyzed. Next, the design factors that influence a blade performance have been selected by ANOVA, and these key design factors were applied to the progressive quadratic response surface method (PQRSM). The optimum set of design factors of the blade was finally proposed.

  • Steel anchor bolts are installed in concrete using a variety of methods. One of the most common methods of anchor bolt installation is using epoxy resin as an infill material injected into the drilled hole to act as a bonding material between the steel bolt and the surrounding concrete. Typical design standards assume uniform stress distribution along the length of the anchor bolt accompanied with single crack leading to pull-out failure. Experimental evidence has shown that the steel anchor bolts fail owing to the multiple failure patterns, hence these design assumptions are not realistic. In this regard, the presented research work details the analytical model that takes into consideration multiple micro cracks in the infill material induced via impact loading. The impact loading from the Schmidt hammer is used to evaluate the bond condition bond condition of anchor bolt and the epoxy material. The added advantage of the presented analytical model is that it is able to take into account the various type of end conditions of the anchor bolts such as bent or U-shaped anchors. Through sensitivity analysis the optimum stiffness and shear strength properties of the epoxy infill material is achieved, which have shown to achieve lower displacement coupled with reduced damage to the surrounding concrete. The accuracy of the presented model is confirmed by comparing the simulated deformational responses with the experimental evidence. From the comparison it was found that the model was successful in simulating the experimental results. The proposed model can be adopted by professionals interested in predicting and controlling the deformational response of anchor bolts.
