Viscous-driven pumping is a very promising type in microscale applications. However, there exist a few disadvantages such as low efficiency and small volume flow rate. In the present study, a pump with tandem rotating cylinders and its optimum synthesis are proposed fur enhancing pumping performance. First, using an unstructured grid CFD method, we investigate the effects of geometrical parameters and then the performance of the pump with tandem cylinders is evaluated. Next, an optimum design synthesis tool is constructed by combining the aforementioned CFD analysis model with the mathematical optimization model, namely, Modified Method of Feasible Directions (MMFD). This technique is used to optimize the geometrical parameters of the pump, fur maximizing pumping efficiency. From the optimization results, it is believed that the present optimum synthesis is robust and has a potential fur other microfluidic device design.
Performance data in the literature on air lift pumps have been based primarily on pumps of long length and large diameter (high lift pumps). Since mariculture operations involve pumps of relatively short length and small diameter, performance data are required for efficient operation. To provide such data, an experimental apparatus was designed and fabricated to test all lift pumps from 2.1 to 3.4 cm inside diameter and from 40 to 300 cm in length. Instrumentation was provided to measure water flow rate and air flow rate as well as water temperature, air temperature, and pressure throughout the system. Results from this study correlate well with high lift pump data in that, for a given pump geometry, maximum water flow occurs for a specific air flow rate. Driving the pump with air flows larger or smaller than this optimum flow rate will decrease the pumping rate. The optimum flows are significantly different for low lift pumps compared to high lift pumps. However, the pumping rate for low lift pumps approaches that for high lift pumps with increasing length.
The groundwater heat pump system(GWHP) is one of the most efficient ground source heat pump system(GSHP) which uses low grade and shallow geothermal energy for cooling and heating purpose. The GWHP system shall be designed properly based on peak block load performance and optimum pumping rate of groundwater comparable to ground coupled heat pump system(GCHP). The optimum pumping rate depends on groundwater temperature at a specific site, size of plate heat exchanger, and total head loss occurred by whole system comprising pumps and pipings. The required optimum flow rates of the system per RT are ranged from 3.8 to 9.8lpm being less than the typical building loop flow of 9.5 to 11.4lpm.
Riverbank Filtration (RBF) is a kind of indirect artificial recharge method and is useful in obtaining higher-quality source water than surface water when procuring municipal water. This study evaluated optimal riverbank filtered water and the productivity of the radial collector wells on Ttansum Island in the area downstream of the Nakdong River, where Gimhae City is constructing a municipal water plant for the purpose of acquiring high-quality water. The RBF wells are planned to provide water to the citizens of Gimhae City through municipal water works. Groundwater flow modeling was performed with the following four scenarios: (a) 9 radial collector wells, (b) 10 radial collector wells, (c) 10 radial collector wells and two additional vertical wells, and (d) 12 radial collector wells. This study can be useful in determineing the optimum production rate of bank filtrated water not only in this study area but also in other places in Korea.

A time-iterative compressible Navier-Stokes code is developed to analyze the flowfield of a two-dimensional ejector nozzle system. A parametric study has been made for two controlling parameters, duct to nozzle area ratio and nozzle pressure ratio. Results show that there is an optimum area ratio for an efficient pumping of secondary flow. At high area ratios, a freestream flow directly passes through the mixing duct without giving adequate pumping. While at low area ratios, jet boundary is acting as a blockage to incoming flow. The nozzle pressure ratio variation shows that the pumping rate increases as the pressure ratio increases provided there is no interaction between the shroud wall and the shock cell structure.

Seawater intrusion phenomenons of coastal area happen by natural or artificial factor. For example, density difference of seawater and fresh water, surface of the water change by tidal current, pumping, aggregate picking from mouth of a river, large scale reclamation in water area business etc. This research analyzed effect that groundwater TDS changed by pumping. As a result, it was expose that TDS density increases by sudden inflow of seawater when do pumping up more than $200m^3/day$. Finally, We are expected to prevent calamity by seawater intrusion in coastal area through this study and propose optimum pumping amount to use groundwater safety.

This study investigates the relationships between the maximum freshwater pumping discharge and hydraulic properties of coastal aquifer using a laboratory model. The experiment performed the fresh pumping test in various locations near the saltwedge induced by saltwater intrusion to freshwater over aquifer characteristics of hydraulic conductivity, salinity, and ground surface slope. Saltwater pumping also tested to protest saltwater intrusion to the excessively discharging freshwater well. The maximum freshwater discharges were achieved, and then the optimum saltwater discharges were measured. It is found that greater hydraulic conductivity and ground surface slope produced greater the maximum freshwater pumping discharge. Salinity gave less impact on the pumping discharge relatively. Higher freshwater discharge was found at higher hydraulic conductivity and steeper ground surface slope. The optimum saltwater discharge required 14% more pumping rate than the maximum freshwater discharge to keep saltwater intrusion to the freshwater pumping well. Pumping well located closer to salt-wedge profile promoted less freshwater pumping discharge. Therefore, pumping well location, hydraulic conductivity, ground surface slope, and salinity should be taken into account in freshwater pumping in coastal aquifer.
Leachate flow behavior due to intermediate cover soil of low hydraulic conductivity and the applicability of pumping method for reducing the leachate level in the landfill are analyzed with the numerical flow model, MODFLOW. Using the hydraulic conductivity and storativity data obtained from the field pumping and slug tests(Jang and Cho, 1999), the hydraulic condition within the landfill is validated. The optimum rate of pumping, the radius of influence, and the efficiency of horizontal drain are analyzed for reducing the leachate level in the landfill. From the results of the analyses, the barrier effect that the buried cover soil of low hydraulic conductivity prevents the vertical movement of leachate flow through the cover soil, which is found from the in-situ geotechnical studies(Jang and Cho, 1999), is identified again. Also, the installation of horizontal drains to the pumping well can increase the pumping rate from 120 ton/day per a well to 300 ton/day. The length of horizontal drain did not influence significantly on the drawdown-time curve of leachate in the landfill.

The use of groundwater and ground_heat is one of the ways to use natural and renewable energy, and it has been considered as a technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy-saving. There are a few researches on the optimum design for the open-loop geothermal system. In this study, to develop the optimal design method numerical simulation of the open-loop geothermal system with two-wells was performed by a groundwater and heat transfer model. In this paper, a study was performed to analyze the system performance according to well distance and pumping flow rate. In the result, average heat exchange rate and heat source temperature were calculated and it was found that they were dependent on the pumping rate.
Experimental investigation has been carried out to determine drag reducing effects of polymer additives for a plate type heat exchanger(evaporator or condenser) in OTEC power plant applications, where the pressure drop in the heat exchangers takes up $70{\sim}80%$ of the total pumping power in the existing system. The rate of drag reduction was investigated with various polymer concentrations and mass flow rates. Experiments were undertaken for a test section in Alfa-Laval plate heat exchanger utilizing Poly Ethylene Oxide(Mw $5{\times}10^6$) as polymer additives. Concentrations of polymer additives were 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 100, 200, 400 wppm at $25^{\circ}C$ and mass flow rates were 0.6kg/s, 0.7kg/s, 0.8kg/s and 0.9kg/s in normal operating ranges for a 15kW Alfa-Laval plate heat exchanger. The maximum effects of drag reductions were found at approximately 0.7kg/s of mass flow rate. The results show that there exists the optimum mass flow rate for the plate heat exchanger to obtain maximum drag reductions. Drag reduction of 20% means considerable savings in pumping power for a large size of OTEC plant.
