  • It is necessary to develop an efficient optimization technique to perform optimum designs which have given design spaces, discrete design values and several design goals. As optimization techniques, direct search method and stochastic search method are widely used in designing of ship structures. The merit of the direct search method is to search the optimum points rapidly by considering the search direction, step size and convergence limit. And the merit of the stochastic search method is to obtain the global optimum points well by spreading points randomly entire the design spaces. In this paper, Pareto Strategy (PS) multi-objective function method is developed by considering the search direction based on Pareto optimal points, the step size, the convergence limit and the random number generation. The success points between just before and current Pareto optimal points are considered. PS method can also apply to the single objective function problems, and can consider the discrete design variables such as plate thickness, longitudinal space, web height and web space. The optimum design results are compared with existing Random Search (RS) multi-objective function method and Evolutionary Strategy (ES) multi-objective function method by performing the optimum designs of double bottom structure and double hull tanker which have discrete design values. Its superiority and effectiveness are shown by comparing the optimum results with those of RS method and ES method.

  • The genetic algorithm (GA) which is one of the popular optimum algorithm has been used to solve a variety of optimum problems. Because it need not require the gradient of objective function and is easier to find global solution than gradient-based optimum algorithm using the gradient of objective function. However optimum method using the GA and the finite element method (FEM) takes many computational time to solve the optimum structural design problem which has a great number of design variables, constraints, and system with many degrees of freedom. In order to overcome the drawback of the optimum structural design using the GA and the FEM, the author developed a computer program which can optimize frame structures by using the GA and the generalized transfer stiffness coefficient method. In order to confirm the effectiveness of the developed program, it is applied to optimum design of plane frame structures. The computational results by the developed program were compared with those of iterative design.

  • This paper proposes a hybrid heuristic and criteria-based method of optimum design which combines the advantages of both the iterated simulated annealing (SA) algorithm and the rigorously derived optimality criteria (OC) for structural optimum design of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings under multi-load cases based on the current Chinese design codes. The entire optimum design procedure is divided into two parts: strength optimum design and stiffness optimum design. A modified SA with the strategy of adaptive feasible region is proposed to perform the discrete optimization of RC frame structures under the strength constraints. The optimum stiffness design is conducted using OC method with the optimum results of strength optimum design as the lower bounds of member size. The proposed method is integrated into the commercial software packages for building structural design, SATWE, and for finite element analysis, ANSYS, for practical applications. Finally, two practical frame-shear-wall structures (15-story and 30-story) are optimized to illustrate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed optimum design method.

  • A growing attention has been paid to the optimum design of structures in recent years. Most studies on the optimum design of reinforced concrete structures has been mainly focussed to the design of structural members such as beams, slabs and columns, and there exist few studies that deal with the optimum design of large-scale concrete shell structures. The purpose of the present investigation is, therefore, to set up an efficient optimum design method for the large-scale reinforced concrete cylindrical shell structures like intake tower of reservoir. The major design variables are the dimensions and steel areas of each member of structures. The construction cost which is compo8ed of the concrete, steel, and form work costs, respectively, is taken as the objective function. The constraint equations for the design of intake-tower are derived on the basis of strength design method. The results obtained are summarized as follows 1. The efficient optimlzation algorithrns which can execute the automatic optimum design of reinforced concrete intake tower based on the strength design method were developed. 2. Since the objective function and design variables were converged to their optimum values within the first or second iteration, the optimization algorithms developed in this study seem to be efficient and stable. 3. When using the strength design method, the construction cost could be saved about 9% compared with working stress design method. Therefore, the reliability of algorithm was proved. 4. The difference in construction cost between the optimum designs with substructures and with entire structure was found to be small and thus the optimum design with substructures may conveniently be used in practical design. 5. The major active constraints of each structural member were found to be the 'bending moment constraint for slab, the minimum longitudinal steel ratio constraint for tower body and the shearing force, bending moment and maximum eccentricity constraints for footing, respectively. 6. The computer program developed in the present study can be effectively used even by an uneiperienced designer for the optimum design of reinforced concrete intake-tower on the basis of strength design method.

  • In this study, the algorithm for the optimum design of cantilever retaining wall was de veloped and solved using Modified Method of Feasible Directions(MMFD), Sequential Linear Programming(SLP) and Sequential Quadratic Programming(SQP). The algorithm was applied to the optimum design of 3-different height cantilever re tairing walls. It was shown that even though the starting points and optimization strategies are dif- ferent, the objective function and optimum design variables converge to within a close range, and consequently the reliability and efficiency of the underlying optimum design algorithm can be verified. It is expected that the optimum design algorithm developed in this study can be utilized efficiently for the optimum design of any scale cantilever retaining wall. Using optimum design method, cantilever retaining wall will be designed more economi- cally and reasonably than using traditional design method.

  • This study was carried out to find out the reasonable optimum design method for the design of prestressed concrete structures. The optimum design problems were formulated and computer programs to solve these problems were developed. To test the reliablity, efficiency, possibility of application and reasonablity of optimum design problems and computer programs, both continuous optimization method and mixed-discrete optimization method were applied to the design of prestressed concrete composite girder and application results were discussed. It is proved that mixed-discrete optimization method is more reliable, efficient and reasonable than continuous optimization method for the optimum design of prestressed concrete structures.

  • Optimum shape and length of laterally loaded piles can be obtained with different optimization techniques. In particular, the Fully Stress Design method (FSD) is an optimality condition that allows to obtain the optimum shape of the pile, while the optimum length can be obtained through a transversality condition at the pile lower end. Using this technique, the structure is analysed by finite elements and shaped through the FSD method by contemporarily checking that the transversality condition is satisfied. In this paper it is noted that laterally loaded piles with optimum shape and length have some peculiar characteristics, depending on the type of cross-section, that allow to design them with simple calculations without using finite element analysis. Some examples illustrating the proposed simplified design method of laterally loaded piles with optimum shape and length are introduced.

  • As the computer related technology evolves a study for a practical use of real structure as well as its hteory for optimum design has been greatly advanced. But the study on optimum design of pre-stressed concrete beam(PSC-beam) bridge for the construction of national roads and highways in Korea is not sufficient. Since a standard section for the PSC-beam is proposed, it is practically used in designing the PSC-beam. It is noticed that the section using the current standard PSC-beam design to be an over-designed with its surplus safety factor. Therefore, it is necessary to consider economical PSC-beam section which automatically satisfies all requirement of design specifications. Thus, in this study, the optimum design methods of PSC-beam are carried out using the gradient-based search method and global search method. As a result of the optimum design method, it was confirmed that the design of PSC-beam has a serious properties to non-linearity and discontinuity. And the section that in economical and efficinet design methods than the current standard design method is proposed.

  • The purpose of the present study is to set up an efficient optimum design method for the large-scale reinforced concrete cylindrical shell structures like intake tower of reservoir and to establish a solid foundation for the automatic optimum structural design combined with finite element analysis. The major design variables are the dimensions and steel areas of each member of the structures. The construction cost which is composed of the concrete, steel, and form work costs, respectively, is taken as the objective function. The constraint equations for the design of intake-tower are derived on the basis of the working stress design method. The corresponding design guides including the standard specification for concrete structures have been also employed in deraving the constraint conditions. The present nonlinear optimization problem is solved by SUMT method. The reinforced concrete intake-tower is decomposed into three major substructures. The optimization is then conducted for both the whole structure and the substructures. The following conclusions can be drawn from the present study. 1. The basis of automatic optimum design of reinforced concrete cylindrical shell structures which is combined with finite element analysis was established. 2. The efficient optimization algorithms which can execute the automatic optimum desigh of reinforced concrete intake-tower based on the working stress design method were developed. 3. • Optimum nozzle design exploiting the method of characteristic(M.O.C) has been in application as an efficient design methodology targeting a less weighted and short expansion nozzle. This paper treats the optimum nozzle design and the analysis of the inviscid compressible flow inside. Based on traditional Rao's method, the optimum nozzle design is coded with minor modifications for the identification of the control surface across which the mass flux should be conserved. Internal flow field is simulated numerically by M.O.C and implicit/explicit Taylor-Galerkin finite element method(F.E.M) with the aid of adaptive remeshing to capture the shock wave, hence improve the accuracy. Designed and calculated flow fields due to the separate analyses show that the mass flux predicted by optimum nozzle design with M.O.C is not conserved across the control surface and the sonic line should be located upstream of the nozzle throat. Rao's optimum nozzle design methodology exaggerates the momentum thrust and tends to overemphasize the engine performance loss.
