  • An ideal heat pump system was optimized by considering the coefficient of performance and the size of condenser and evaporator as two competing objectives. Thermodynamic limitations were included as natural constraints. Experimental data for compressor performance were utilized in evaluating the system behavior. With a varying weighting factor between the two competing objectives the optimum deiogn parameters were presented in a graphical form.

  • The heat and flow characteristics in a single-phase parallel-flow heat exchanger was examined numerically to obtain its optimal shape. A response surface method was introduced to predict its performance approximately with respect to design parameters over design domain. Design parameters are inflow and outflow angle of the working fluid and horizontal and vertical location of inlet and outlet. The evaluation of the relative priority of the design parameters was performed to choose three important parameters in order to use a response surface method. A JF factor was used as an evaluation characteristic value to consider the heat transfer and the pressure drop simultaneously. The JF factor of the optimum model, compared to that of the base model, was increased by about 5.3%.

  • This study is focused on the performance prediction and design of the centrifugal pump with optimum shape. Design and analysis of centrifugal pump rely on experience of designer due to many fluid mechanical and geometrical variables. In this study, a design method was developed with experimental factors and analysed the method by comparition with 2nd-order vortex panel method. Impeller is the most important component affecting the performance of the centrifugal pump. The predicted total head for three cases, of which designs were determined by this method, agrees well with a particular commercial pump. This study shows that satisfactory performance of an optimal pump shape can be obtained through the automatic design routine.

  • This paper optimized the design parameters of the offset strip fin in a heat exchanger. To decrease the pressure drop and increase heat transfer, the performance factors such as j/f, $j/f^{1/3}$, and JF, which could be used to estimate the pressure drop and heat transfer simultaneously, were employed as the criteria for optimization. In the present study, STDQAO, PQRSM, and MGA were used for solving the constrained nonlinear optimization problem. The JF factor and heat transfer performance of the optimized offset-strip fin were greater than those of the reference offset-strip fin by 36% and 280%, respectively.

  • This research automatically designed psc-box girder bridges by using an optimum design program and applied the results to the various types of bridges to verify if common facts used in steel bridges or concrete bridges can be applied to PSC bridges. Namely, it investigated appropriate unequal span length division by comparing with bridge of unequal and equal span length division, and verified the influence of the load factors which are changed by time or specification applying the results to various types of bridge. and it applied reinforced concrete bridge and steel bridge's variable girder depth which is slender and effective to save material costs to PSC box girder bridges. Technical solution of optimum design program used SUMT procedure, and Kavlie's extended penalty function to allow infeasible design points in the process. Powell's direct method was used for searching design points and a gradient's approximate method was used to reduce the design time.

  • Staggered dimples printed on opposite walls of an internal cooling channel are formulated numerically and optimized to enhance heat transfer performance. Nusselt number and friction factor based objectives are considered and a weighted average surrogate model is used to approximate the data generated by numerical simulation. The dimpled channel shape is defined by three geometric design variables, and the design point within design space are selected using Latin hypercube sampling. A weighted-sum method for multi-objective optimization is applied to integrate multiple objectives into a single objective. By the optimization, the objective function value is improved largely and heat transfer rate is increase much higher than pressure loss increase due to shape deformation. Channel with vertically non-symmetric optimum dimples is tested and found that the best appears if dimples on opposite wall are displaced by one quarter of dimple spacing.

  • Manufacturing of complex surface plates in stern and stem is a major factor in cost of a preliminary ship design by computing process. If these hull plate parts are effectively classified, it helps to compute the processing cost and find the way to cut-down the processing cost. This paper presents a new method to classify surface plates effectively in the preliminary ship design using neural network. A neural-network-based ship hull plate classification program was developed and tested for the automatic classification of ship design. The input variables are regarded as Gaussian curvature distributions on the plate. Various applicable rules of network topology are applied in the ship design. In automation of hull plate classification, two different numbers of input variables are used. By observing the results of the proposed method, the effectiveness of the proposed method is discussed. As a result, high prediction rate was achieved in the ship design. Accordingly, to the initial design stage, the ship hull plate classification program can be used to predict the ship production cost. And the proposed method will contribute to reduce the production cost of ship.

  • When Deterministic Design Optimization (DDO) methods are used, deterministic optimum designs are frequently pushed to the design constraint boundary, leaving little or no room for tolerances (or uncertainties) in design, manufacture, and operating processes. In the Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO) model for robust system design, the mean values of uncertain system variables are usually used as design variables, and the cost is optimized subject to prescribed probabilistic constraints as defined by a nonlinear mathematical programming problem. Therefore, a RBDO solution that reduces the structural weight in uncritical regions does not only provide an improved design but also a higher level of confidence in the design. In this work, we seek to improve the quality of RBDO processes using efficient optimization techniques with object of improving the resulting objective function and satisfying the required constraints. Our recent RBDO developments show its efficiency and applicability in this context. So we present some recent structural engineering applications demonstrate the efficiency of these developed RBDO methods.

  • A basic procedure to design marine propellers by a curved lifting line theory was shown. By adapting discrete singularity method, it became possible to take into account of skew, rake and the contraction of slip stream in the early stage of preliminary design procedure. It is also shown that lifting line theory based on the discrete singularity method converges to a common solution obtained by induction factor method with a relatively small number of discrete elements. Lifting the blade geometry more accurately on the basis of hydrodynamic principles. A number of numerical results from lifting line calculation are presented for the purpose of comparison with the previous method, and with these results two sample designs are carried out, which are wake-adapted optimum and wake-adapted non-optimum propellers.

  • Purpose: Recently, renewable energy system has been widely used to reduce the energy consumption and CO2 emission of building. A photovoltaic/thermal(PVT) system is a kind of efficient energy uses, which is combined with photovoltaic module and solar thermal collector. PVT system removes heat from PV module by through thermal fluid to raise the performance efficiency of the PV system. However, though PVT system has the merit of the improved efficiency in theoretical approach, there have been few performance analysis for PVT system using the dynamic energy simulation. In this study, in order to establish the optimum design method of this system, simulation was conducted by using individual system modules. Method: For the dynamic simulation, TRNSYS17 was used and local weather data was utilized. Furthermore, the system performance in various installation condition was calculated by case studies. Result: As a result, the amount of electric generation and heat production in each case was found by the simulation. The gap of system performance was also evident according to the installation condition.
