  • The main requirements of modern welded metal structures are the load-carrying capacity (safety), fitness for production, and economy. The primary objective of attaching longitudinal stiffeners is to improve the buckling strength of relatively thin compression panels. This paper gives several comparisons for stiffened plates with different loadings (static, dynamic), different shape of stiffeners (flat, L-shape, trapezoidal), different steel grades, and different welding technologies (SMAW, GMAW, SAW), different costs to show the necessity of a combination of design, fabrication and economic aspects. Safety and fitness for production are guaranteed by fulfilling the design and fabrication constraints. The economy is achieved by minimizing the cost function. It is shown that the optimum sizes depend on the welding technology, the material yield stress, the profile of the stiffeners, the load cycles and the place of the production.

  • This paper investigate the optimum thickness distribution of plate structure with different essential boundary conditions in the fundamental natural frequency maximization problem. In this study, the fundamental natural frequency is considered as the objective function to be maximized and the initial volume of structures is used as the constraint function. The computer-aided geometric design (CAGD) such as Coon's patch representation is used to represent the thickness distribution of plates. A reliable degenerated shell finite element is adopted calculate the accurate fundamental natural frequency of the plates. Robust optimization algorithms implemented in the optimizer DoT are adopted to search optimum thickness values during the optimization iteration. Finally, the optimum thickness distribution with respect to different boundary condition

  • This paper deals with the maximization of the critical buckling load of simply supported antisymmetric angle-ply plates resting on Pasternak foundation subjected to compressive loads using teaching learning based optimization method (TLBO). The first order shear deformation theory is used to obtain governing equations of the laminated plate. In the present optimization problem, the objective function is to maximize the buckling load factor and the design variables are the fibre orientation angles in the layers. Computer programming is developed in the MATLAB environment to estimate optimum stacking sequences of laminated plates. A comparison also has been performed between the TLBO, genetic algorithm (GA) and differential evolution algorithm (DE). Some examples are solved to show the applicability and usefulness of the TLBO for maximizing the buckling load of the plate via finding optimum stacking sequences of the plate. Additionally, the influences of different number of layers, plate aspect ratios, foundation parameters and load ratios on the optimal solutions are investigated.

  • A numerical analysis of cable-stayed bridge is conducted to determine optimum longitudinal modulus of elasticity which represents the boundary condition between the tower and main girder. The effect of longitudinal modulus of elasticity is investigated for different loading condition (live load, wind load, seismic load), respectively. There are significant changes in the member forces as variations of longitudinal modulus of elasticity, such as, $k_h$=e=100tonf/m/bearing (live load), $k_h$=e=1000tonf/m/bearing (seismic load), However, the wind loads do not affect member forces. The optimum longitudinal modulus of elasticity is determined from considering minimum member forces in the numerical analysis results.

  • The occurrence of progressive collapse induced by the removal of the vertical load-bearing element in the structure, because of fire or earthquake, has been a significant challenge between structural engineers. Progressive collapse is defined as the complete failure or failure of a part of the structure, initiating with a local rupture in a part of the building and can threaten the stability of the structure. In the current study, the behavior of the structures equipped with a cylindrical friction damper, when the vertical load-bearing elements are eliminated, is considered in two cases: 1-The load-bearing element is removed under the gravity load, and 2-The load-bearing element is removed due to the earthquake lateral forces. In order to obtain a generalized result in the seismic case, 22 pair motions presented in FEMA p 695 are applied to the structures. The study has been conducted using the vertical push down analysis for the case (1), and the nonlinear time-history analysis for the second case using OpenSEES software for 5,10, and 15-story steel frames. Results indicate that, in the first case, the load coefficient, and accordingly the strength of the structure equipped with cylindrical friction dampers are increased considerably. Furthermore, the results from the second case demonstrate that the displacements, and consequently the forces imposed to the structure in the buildings equipped with the cylindrical friction damper substantially was reduced. An optimum slip load is defined in the friction dampers, which permits the damper to start its frictional damping from this threshold load. Therefore, the optimum slip load of the damper is calculated and discussed for both cases.

  • This paper deals with multiobjective optimization of symmetrically laminated composite angle-ply annular sector plates subjected to axial uniform pressure load and thermal load. The design objective is the maximization of the weighted sum of the critical buckling load and fundamental frequency. The design variable is the fibre orientations in the layers. The performance index is formulated as the weighted sum of individual objectives in order to obtain the optimum solutions of the design problem. The first-order shear deformation theory is used for the mathematical formulation. Finally, the effects of different weighting factors, annularity, sector angle and boundary conditions on the optimal design are investigated and the results are compared.

  • The objectives of this study are to develope the automatic design programs to offer the data when constructing a small scale vinyl-house by region. This program consists of four subroutines. The first is an automatic greenhouse modeling program, the second is a calculating design load program by region, the third is a structural analysis program and the last is a optimum shape design program. The structural analysis can be conducted by simple date input and considering the design load of the install regions into account. The shape of input data is very simple, and the program reflects the design load by region. The output data can be obtained from the automatical calculation processing after structural analysis. The program was verified by compared with outputs of a common use structural analysis program and the results are the same. It was concluded that the developed program could be used efficiently in optimum design of small scale vinyl house.

  • This paper suggests a method to design the deep groove ball bearing for high-load capacity by using a genetic algorithm. The design problem of ball bearings is a typical discrete/continuous optimization problem because the deep groove ball bearing has discrete variables, such as ball size and number of balls. Thus, a genetic algorithm is employed to find the optimum values from a set of discrete design variables. The ranking process is proposed to effectively deal with the constraints in genetic algorithm. Results obtained fer several 63 series deep groove ball bearings demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed design methodology by showing that the average basic dynamic capacities of optimally designed bearings increase about 9~34% compared with the standard ones.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an integrated process planning system which can flexibly cope with the status changes in a shop floor by utilizing the concept of Non-Linear and Closed-Loop Process Planning(NCPP). In this paper, Genetic Algorithm(GA) is employed in order to quickly generate feasible setup sequences for minimizing the makespan and tardiness under an NCPP. The genetic algorithm developed in this study for getting the machine load utilizes differentiated mutation rate and method in order to increase the chance to avoid a local optimum and to reach a global optimum. Also, it adopts a double gene structure for the sake of convenient modeling of the shop floor. The last step in this system is a simulation process which selects a proper process plan among alternative process plans.

  • In order to improve the digging load capacity of a domestic excavator model. computer aided design(CAD) technique was applied to the optimum design of the excavator boom. From this study, the digging load capacity of both the bucket cylinder and the dipperstick cylinder could be made about same and the overall digging load capacity could be increased by about 50%, also, the computer program package developed in this study can be flexibly applied to the design of other construction machines by changing and/or adding a few subprograms and the input data.
