It has been reported that most wastewater treatment plants have difficulties in nitrogen removal during winter season due to declined activity of nitrifiers in the condition of low temperature. This study was conducted in order to find out optimum operating condition for efficient nitrogen removal in low temperature. A series of operating conditions with various HRTs of each tank were simulated using the GPS-X program. The optimum HRT combination for effective nitrogen removal was 0.3 hr/0.5 hr/1.36 hr/4.84 hr(PreAx/An/Ax/Ox) with 51.4% of T-N removal efficiency and 57.3% of $NH_4^+$-N removal efficiency.
This study was performed to determine the effect of the influent flow distribution ratio and hydraulic retention time(HRT) on removal of organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus when domestic sewage was treated by the advanced step aeration(ASA) process. Results of the experiment for the determination of the optimum influent flow distribution ratio between the anaerobic reactor and the anoxic reactor showed BOD removal efficiencies of above 92.0% at all influent flow distribution ratios from 9:1 to 4:6. The highest T-N removal efficiency was 82.6% at the influent flow distribution ratio of 6:4. On the other hand, the highest T-P removal efficiency was 67.8% at the influent flow distribution ratio of 9:1. Considering both the T-N and T-P removal efficiencies, the influent distribution ratio of 6:4 was considered the optimum. Results of the experiment for the determination of the optimum HRT at the optimum influent flow distribution ratio of 6:4 revealed BOD removal efficiencies better than 92.7% at all HRTs from 12hr down to 6hr. The highest T-N and T-P removal efficiency were 82.6% and 59.5%, respectively both at the HRT of 8hr. In conclusion, the optimum influent flow distribution ratio and HRT for treatment of domestic sewage by the ASA process were determined to be 6:4 and 8hr, respectively.

This study was performed to find out the optimum condition for hydrogen production by changing mixture ratio from 3:7(food waste water : swine wastewater) without pre-treatment of food wastewater and swine wastewater using a continuous reaction process. It was confirmed that hydrogen generation according to pH is the highest in a condition of pH 5.5, and that the optimum pH for hydrogen production in case of mixing food wastewater with swine wastewater is 5.5 through this. Hydrogen generation according to HRT showed high hydrogen generation rate in case of 4 days rather than 3 days, and this involves largely in vitality of hydrogen producing bacteria according to variation of the HRT value, so it is judged that HRT also acts as an important factor to hydrogen producing bacteria. The organic removal efficiency recorded a removal efficiency of maximum TS 52%, VS 71%, TSS 83% and VSS 89% at the 6th day of operation, and it was confirmed that organic removal efficiency is possible even through an hydrogen production process.
Most of the municipal wastewater treatment plants operated in Korea are designed for high concentrations municipal sewage. However, activated sludge process employed by municipal wastewater treatment plant is operated at low organic loading. The objective of this study was to determine optimum operating condition of activated sludge process for treatment of low concentration municipal sewage. Three bench scale activated sludge reactors were operated to investigate the effect of HRT and SRT on the COD and TSS removal efficiency. The average concentration of TSS, SCOD, SBOD and TKN in influent were 118mg/l, 61mg/l, 21mg/l, and 12mg/l, respectively. The activated sludge reactors operated with various HRT and SRT showed about 89-93% TSS removal efficiency. HRT and SRT does not affect the TSS removal efficiency of actvatied sludge process significantly. However, HRT affected the SCOD removal efficiency slightly. As the HRT decreases from 13hours to 3hours, the SCOD removal efficiency decreases from 67% to 56%. The average effluent TCOD concentration of the reactor operated with 3hours of HRT was approximatly 40-45mg/l. Kinetic coefficient yield (Yt) and decay coefficients(Kd) were 0.594-0.954 mgMLVSS/mgCOD and $0.0197-0.0317day^{-1}$, respectively. Low concentration municipal sewage can be treated with 3 hours of HRT without effluent quality deterioration and SRT does not affect the substrate removal efficiency at this operation condition.
Denitrification is one of the important processes of removing nitrate from in recirculating aquaculture systems. And this process is affected by many factors such as external organic carbon sources, hydraulic retention time (HRT), COD/NO3--N (C:N) ratio, etc. However, not many studies were done for the optimum conditions of denitrification in the recirculation system for aquaculture. Therefore, this study was conducted to find out the optimum removal condition of NO3--N using submerged denitrification biofilter. The combinations of two external organic carbon sources (glucose and methanol), two HRT (4 and 8-hour) and four differnent C : N ratios (3, 4, 5, 6) were tested. The removal efficiencies of NO3--N and total inorganic nitrogen (TIM) at 8-hour HRT were better than those at 4-hour's (P<0.05). The maximum removal efficiency of NO3--N by methanol (97.8%) was achieved at HRT and C : N ratio were 8-hour and 4.0 respectively. The efficiencies of methanol for the removal of NO3--N and TIN were always better than those of glucose (P<0.05). The maximum removal efficiencies of total inorgainc nitrogen (TIN) were gained at C : N ration of 5.0. The maximum removel efficiencies of TIN using methanol and glucose were 96.9% and 71.5% respectively. Anaerobic condition which is necessary for denitrification process was not made until the 8-hour HRT and higher C : N ratio (5.0). Removal of NO3--N at 4-hour HRT and C : N ration lower than 5.0 were inhibited by oxygen and/or low quantity of external organic carbon. Removal efficiencies of NO3--N were also inhibited by high C : N (6.0) ratio when HRT was 8-hour.
Characteristics of a downflow anaerobic packed bed reactor with raschig ring ceramics as a packing were measured and discussed for the basic evaluation of the process. A synthesized glucose substrate wastewater were used as a feed and process characteristics such as pH, biogas production, composition of produced gas, COD removal and VSS were measured with the hydraulic retention time (HRT) changing from 0.25 to 2 days. As a result, this type of reactor was applicable in continuous operation within the given HRT range and the transient period approaching the steady state was about 20 days. The content of methane in produced gas increase with HRT was always high above 50% enough to use as energy source. The COD removal efficiency increased gradually as HRT increased. The axial profile of VSS concentration in the reactor usually showed the maximum at the lower region and the minimum at the middle. The VSS concentration at the upper region and the exit appeared similarly. However, at 0.25 day of HRT, the VSS concentration of effluent became higher than that of the upper region. Therefore the optimum HRT of this reactor occurred about 0.5 day, at which the production of methane began to be just stabilized and loss of VSS and COD removal were resonable.
This study was carried out to evaluate the performance of a lab-scale novel septic tank system for improving the conventional septic tank in the developing countries of water shortages. The lab-scale novel septic tank system consists of sepetic tank, aeration tank with HBC-ring, and sand filter. Optimum HRT was reguired about 1.5days to get a total COD removal efficiency of 90%, COD, BOD and SS removal efficiency was about 70%, 60%, and 85% in sepetic tank only. The structure of sepetic tank with two stages results in the high removal efficiency of organic matter. When sepetic tank, aeration tank, and sand filter were more than HRT 1.5days, 18hrs, and 12hrs, respectively, final effluent was less than 20 mg/L of BOD, 14 mg/L of SS, so that there is a high potential of its use for reusing water in flush toilet. There is no significant effect of HRT change on nutrient removal. Total nitrogen removal efficiency was about 40%, final effluent was 30~40 mg/L of TN, total phosphorus removal efficiency was about 11~25%, final effluent was 9~12 mg/L of TP. Because there is very small amounts of organic nitrogen and phosphorus in effluent, it was possible to reuse water for agricultural use.
This study was accomplished using Anaerobic/Anoxic/Oxic biofilm reactors with fixed media and post-treatment reactor for natural purification with aquatic floating plants. The objectives of this study was to investigate the characteristics of organics, nitrogen and phosphorus removal from sewage with the HRT. The average removal efficiency of SS and $COD_{Cr}$ increases as increasing the hydraulic retention time (HRT) until 12 hr of the HRT, and it was constant over 12 hr of the HRT. The removal efficiency of them was about 93% and 89% respectively over the 12 hr of HRT. The average $BOD_5$ and $COD_{Mn}$ increases as increasing the HRT and the removal efficiency of them was 84.91 % and 76.03% respectively at the 26 hr of HRT. The removal efficiency of T-N and T-P increases as increasing the HRT until 61 hr of the HRT, and it was constant over 61 hr of the HRT. At the HRT of 61 hr, it was 70.20%, 77.86% respectively. It was found that the optimum HRT was 61 hr in case of the nutrients. Before and after experiment, the nitrogen content was similar in leaves of the water hyacinths but the nitrogen content in roots after experiment was 5.5% more than its content before experiment. It was known that the nitrogen was absorbed by the water hyacinths.
This study was accomplished using Anaerobic/Anoxic/Oxic upflow packed-bed column reactors with fixed media and Loop Reactor with fluidized media instead of Oxic reactor. The objectives of this study was to investigate the characteristics of organics, nitrogen and phosphorus removal from sewage with the HRT. The average removal efficiencies of $BOD_5$ and SS increase as increasing the hydraulic retention time (HRT) until 16 h of the HRT, and they were constant over 16 h of the HRT. The removal efficiency of $BOD_5$ in case of packed-bed reactor and Loop Reactor was about 86.6% and 90.9% respectively at 16 h of the HRT. The removal efficiency of SS in packed-bed reactor and Loop Reactor was about 78.0% and 88.2% respectively at 16 h of the HRT. The average removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$ and $COD_{Mn}$ showed similar trends as those of $BOD_5$ and SS. At the HRT of 16 h, the removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ in case of packed-bed reactor and Loop Reactor was 63.5%, 75.2% and that of $COD_{Mn}$ was 60.7%, 73.6% respectively. The average removal efficiencies of T-N and T-P increase as increasing the HRT. The removal efficiencies of T-N and T-P in Loop Reactor were 33.6% and 54.5% respectively at 16 h of the HRT and T-N and T-P were better removed in Loop Reactor. From this result, it was found that the performance of Loop Reactor was much higher than the performance of packed-bed reactor and the optimum HRT was 16 h.
This study was to survey proper condition of nitrate removal by hydraulic retention time (HRT) and measured growth of black rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) and giant croaker (Nibea japonica) in the seawater recirculating culture system designed for nitrate removal. Nitrate conversion to nitrogen at 8 hr-HRT was higher than 16 hr-HRT, amounting to $32.2\;g/m^3/day$ in the seawater recirculating culture system. The removal efficiency of nitrate improved when dissolved oxygen was situated less than 0.5 mg/L. Daily growth rate (DGR) and feed efficiency (FE) of S. schlegeli with mean body weight of 108 g in 8 hr-HRT were significantly higher values than those in 4 hr-HRT (P<0.05). The DGR and FE of N. japonica with mean body weight of 12 g in added carbon system showed not differing in the values from N. japonica in control system (P>0.05).
