In the present study, stern form optimization has been carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. The viscous pressure drag has been minimized to optimize stern shape. Parametric modification function has been used to modify the shape of the hull. By the use of the parametric modification function and algebraic scheme to grid manipulation, the initial ship geometry was easily deformed according to change of design parameters. For purpose of illustration, KRISO 319K VLCC (KVLCC) is chosen for example ship to demonstrate stern form optimization. The numerical results indicate that the optimized hull yields a reduction in viscous resistance.

The primary objective of this study was to assess the energy efficiency performance of an optimized hull form capable of saving energy based on existing vessels. The bow shape of existing vessels was investigated, giving consideration to design draft and speed. Resistance performances were also assessed for existing vessels according to operating conditions. Commercial CFD codes and model test materials were used to assess effective power. An optimized hull form with minimum resistance was selected given real operating conditions. The effective horsepower of existing and optimized vessels was estimated at three speeds. Resistance performance for an optimized vessel showed a 6 % improvement in effective horsepower at design speed (12 knots) compared to existing vessels. Quasi-propulsive efficiency employed experimental data, while energy efficiency performance was analyzed based on operating days, bunker fuel oil C cost, daily fuel oil consumption and specific fuel oil consumption. Energy efficiency performance for an optimized vessel showed a gain of 30 million won per year in reduced costs at design speed (12 knots) compared to existing vessels.

The hull form of icebreaking tanker depends on the trade route and ice characteristic. The hull form has to be designed for icebreaking concept if the vessel is operating in heavy ice and also the hull from has to be optimized for general tanker when the ship is operating in ice-free ocean. This paper presents comparison of ship resistance in pack ice, level ice and open water. Four ships are used to compare the resistance characteristic. One is conventional tanker and three ships are icebreaking tankers. The ice model test was carried out at the IOT (Institute for Ocean Technology, Newfoundland, Canada) and open water test was performed at 55MB (Samsung Ship Model Basin). The ice resistance of conventional tanker was predicted by Colbourne's method. The resistance of open water, pack ice and level ice are compared and discussed. The best hull form of icebreaker is not good in open water performance compare to conventional tanker. This result explains that the hull form of icebreaker and normal tanker have to compromise when the ship is operated in ice and ice-free condition. The result of this paper gives a guide for icebreaking tanker design.

A design procedure for a ship with minimum total resistance was developed using a numerical optimization method called SQP(Sequential Quadratic Programming) and a CFD technique based on the Rankine source panel method with the nonlinear free surface boundary conditions. During the whole optimization process the geometry of the hull shape was represented based on the NURBS(Non-uniform rational B-spline) technique and the modification of the hull shape was controlled using the Bell-shaped distribution function to keep the fairness of the hull shape before and after the hull modification. The numerical analysis was carried out using 4000TEU container ship in the towing tank facility installed in the Pusan national university to know the validity of the developed algorithm for this study. As the results of the numerical analysis it proved that the resistance of the optimized hull is conspicuously reduced in comparison with the original hull in a wave-making resistance point of view.

The model tests results for the original lines of an 10000TEU container vessel show that the delivered power is higher and could not satisfy the requirement of energy saving effects and design targets. In this paper, the lines optimization of the 10,000 twin-skeg container vessel was carried out by parametric modeling and CFD simulations. At first, the CFD methods for twin-skeg hull form were validated by the comparison with the experimental results. Then more than one hundred parameters were adopted for the establishment of the fully parametric model. Based on the parametric model of the twin-skeg container vessel, the preliminary optimization was carried out by tight coupling of FRIENDSHIP-FRAMEWORK with potential flow of SHIPFLOW. Then several important parameters related to the after part of twin-skeg vessel were investigated by viscous flow computation. The final optimized variant PM11, which the total resistance was reduced by about 8.3% in model scale, is obtained within the constraints of general arrangement. And the model tests for variant PM11 was carried out in CSSRC, which shows that the resistance of optimized variant PM11 is decreased by about 8.6%.
The effects of the air on the reductions in resistance when supplied under the bottom of a semi-planing ship with a step are investigated in the present study. A 1.275m long FRP model is constructed and the pressure and viscous tangential stresses over the planing surface of the hull with and without air supply are measured through measuring holes carefully selected at the towing tank of Seoul National University. Locations of holes most suitable for air injection are surveyed in front of the planing surface of the model with careful examinations of the limiting streamlines and pressure distributions measured without air supply. At those locations, found to be just front of the step, air has been supplied into a wake region to form an air filled cavity of fixed type. Flow rates and pressure of the supplied air as well as the local pressure and shear stress distributions on the hull surface are measured to understand the physics involved as well as to determine the conditions most effective in resistance reduction at the design speed. It has been found that total resistance of the stepped semi-planing hull can be considerably reduced if an air cavity generated by an adequate air injection at the bottom of the hull near the step. After the cavity optimized at the given speed, air bubbles also have been generated right behind the point where dividing streamlines re-attach to further reduce the frictional resistance but found to be not so effective as the air cavity in resistance reductions.

The optimized distance between skegs and angle of the skeg for a standard twin-skeg type LNG carrier were presented using the CFD and model tests. The evaluation method of self-propulsion performance was derived based on the results of CFD and confirmed the validity through model tests. The analyses to assess self-propulsion performance using CFD were shown by flow line patterns on the skeg surface, nominal wake distribution in the propeller plane and the evaluation for flow balance around stern skegs. The optimized ship that was applied to the optimized two design parameters in stern skeg arrangement for target ship was derived in this work. Finally speed performance of mother ship which is existing ship and optimized ship were compared through CFD and model tests. And the usefulness about the evaluation method of self-propulsion performance was reconfirmed.

This paper presents a method of minimizing the wave resistance components, due to the linear wave propagating to the far field and the breaking wave in the vicinity of the hull. This method consists of the linear optimization method for the linear wave resistance and the statistical optimization method for the breaking wave resistance through the analysis of the experimental data. For the purpose of the application, a wall-sided model with parabolic waterplane shape was selected as a basic hull form, and two modified hull forms with varied $C_p-curve$ of the fore-body were derived from the linear wave optimization method and the empirical method. The correlation between the linear wave resistance and the breaking wave resistance according to the $C_p-curve$ variation of the fore-body was investigated through the experimental and analytical results for the three hull forms. The fore-body shape optimized by the present method shows the reduction of the wave resistance by 47% comparing to the basic hull form at the design speed($F_n=0.26$).

This paper discusses some practical problems of the determination of ship wave resistance from flow calculation and the model test. there are so many kind of CFD program as FLUENT, WAVIS, SHIPFLOW, COMET etc. for finding optimized hull. we should know how much percent we trust the program. so if we gather computed values of the wave resistance we'll able to get more accurated values of presumptive.
Vessels are traditionally optimized for a single condition, normally the contract speed at the design draft. The actual operating conditions quite often differ significantly. At other speed and draft combinations, adjusting the trim can often be used to reduce the hull resistance. Changing the trim is easily done by shifting ballast water. There are several ways to assess the effect of the trim on the hull resistance and fuel consumption, including in-service measurements, model tests, and CFD. In this paper, CFD is employed for the assessment of the resistance performance according to the trim conditions. The commercial CFD code of the STAR-CCM+ is utilized to evaluate the ship’s resistance performance on a 6,800 TEU container ship. To validate of the effectiveness of STAR-CCM+, the experimental result of the KCS hull form is compared with the result from STAR-CCM+. It is found that the total resistance of the 6,8000 TEU container ship was reduced by 2.6% in the case of a 1-m trim by head at 18knots.
