  • In this paper, we propose a fast algorithm that can reduce the complexity for inter mode decision of the H.264 encoder. The main idea consists of two techniques. The first one is the technique early terminating mode decision process. We focused on the skip and $16{\times}16$ mode because these modes occupies the largest portion in most of sequences. The second one is the technique skipping unnecessary $8{\times}8$ modes. The time consumption caused by the $8{\times}8$ mode is very considerable. Therefore if we can extract the unnecessary $8{\times}8$ mode calculation well, a large amount of time can be saved in total encoding process. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve up to 43% speed up ratio with insignificant PSNR loss. The increase of total bits encoded is also not noticeable.

  • Low-Rank Representation (LRR) based methods are widely used in many practical applications, such as face clustering and object detection, because they can guarantee high prediction accuracy when used to constructing graphs in graph - based semi-supervised learning. However, in order to solve the LRR problem, it is necessary to perform singular value decomposition on the square matrix of the number of data points for each iteration of the algorithm; hence the calculation is inefficient. To solve this problem, we propose an improved and faster LRR method based on the recently published Fast LRR (FaLRR) and suggests ways to introduce and optimize additional constraints on the underlying optimization goals in order to address the fact that the FaLRR is fast but actually poor in classification problems. Our experiments confirm that the proposed method finds a better solution than LRR does. We also propose Fast MLRR (FaMLRR), which shows better results when the goal of minimizing is added.

  • Volunteer computing is a new computing paradigm that performs operations on idle resources of many nodes. The operation method of the client application for the execution of the volunteer computing is determined by the setting information of the user. Ideal operation requires optimized settings for system features and operating methods of other applications. In this paper, we analyze the usage ratio of CPU and GPU periodically, and develop a manager that dynamically applies optimized options. Through our proposed mechanism, the performance of the task computing is higher than that of the existing Volunteer Computing, and the performance interference is minimized. It is expected that volunteers will be able to provide higher computing resources for Volunteer Computing Project.

  • Hippuryl-L-histidyl-L-leucine (Hip-L-His-L-Leu, HHL) is the known substrate of ACE, which used often in inhibition kinetic study to design new inhibitor. Here we use HHL molecule as a template to predict pharmacophore which can interact with residues in active site of AnCE, new potential insecticide target protein. To explain physicochemical properties related to molecular geometry and conformational change in reaction field as well as electron density of atoms associated to pharmacophores, geometry optimization, NMR chemical shifts and natural population analysis were performed by ab initio and DFT method. Calculated NMR chemical shifts showed good agreement with the experimental ones and obtained electron densities were used for analyzing pharmacophores of corresponding atoms. Finally, we could extract aye pharmacophores related to hydrophobic aliphatic and aromatic site, hydrogen bonding donor and acceptor site and Zn binding site from the HHL molecule.

  • Due to the fast response to algae bloom issue in drinking water treatment plant, very fast determination methodology for algal toxin is required. In this study, column switching technique based online preconcentration method was combined with high resolution full scan mass spectrometer to save sample preparation time and to obtain fast and accurate result. After parameter optimization of online preconcentration, 1mL filtered sample was directly injected to trap column with switching valve system. Next, target toxins are eluted by 98% acetonitrile and analysed with 150 - 1,100 amu scan range at 50,000 resolving power. Method detection limit (MDL) for microcystin-LR, the most toxic isomer, was 0.1 ng/mL and others such as microcystin-YR, microcystin-RR and nodularin were 0.08, 0.03 and 0.04 ng/mL, respectively. This is the best improved sensitivities with 1mL volume in the literature. Furthermore, due to the use of ultra pressure HPLC (UPLC), the whole method run was completed in 4 min. Real sample applications for 173 sample including 55 surface water and 118 treatment plant samples for raw and treated water could be done within 16 hours. In our calculation, this methodology is roughly 80% faster than the previous manual solid-phase extraction with LC-MS/MS method.

  • Using multi-sensor or multi-temporal high resolution satellite images together is essential for efficient applications in remote sensing area. The purpose of this paper is to estimate geometric difference of translations between high-resolution optical and SAR images automatically. The geometric and radiometric pre-processing steps were fulfilled to calculate the similarity between optical and SAR images by using Mutual Information method. The coarsest-level pyramid images of each sensor constructed by gaussian pyramid method were generated to estimate the initial translation difference of the x, y directions for calculation efficiency. The precise geometric difference of translations was able to be estimated by applying this method from coarsest-level pyramid image to original image in order. Yet even when considered only translation between optical and SAR images, the proposed method showed RMSE lower than 5m in all study sites.

  • This study systematically compared two hybrid deterministic/Monte Carlo transport codes, ADVANTG/MCNP and MAVRIC, in solving a difficult shielding problem for a real-world spent fuel storage cask. Both hybrid codes were developed based on the consistent adjoint driven importance sampling (CADIS) methodology but with different implementations. The dose rate distributions on the cask surface were of primary interest and their predicted results were compared with each other and with a straightforward MCNP calculation as a baseline case. Forward-Weighted CADIS was applied for optimization toward uniform statistical uncertainties for all tallies on the cask surface. Both ADVANTG/MCNP and MAVRIC achieved substantial improvements in overall computational efficiencies, especially for gamma-ray transport. Compared with the continuous-energy ADVANTG/MCNP calculations, the coarse-group MAVRIC calculations underestimated the neutron dose rates on the cask's side surface by an approximate factor of two and slightly overestimated the dose rates on the cask's top and side surfaces for fuel gamma and hardware gamma sources because of the impact of multigroup approximation. The fine-group MAVRIC calculations improved to a certain extent and the addition of continuous-energy treatment to the Monte Carlo code in the latest MAVRIC sequence greatly reduced these discrepancies. For the two continuous-energy calculations of ADVANTG/MCNP and MAVRIC, a remaining difference of approximately 30% between the neutron dose rates on the cask's side surface resulted from inconsistent use of thermal scattering treatment of hydrogen in concrete.

  • A sandwich element is a special Hybrid structural form of the composite construction, which is consisted of three main parts : thin, stiff and relatively high density faces separated by a thick, light, and weaker core material. In a sandwich construction, the shear deformation of the faces. Therefore, in the calculation of the bending stiffness, the shear effect should be included. In this paper, the minimum weight is selected as an object function, as the weight critical structures are usually composed of these kind of construction. To obtain the minimum weight of sandwich panel, the principle of minimum potential energy is used and as for the design constraints, the allowable bending stress of face material, the allowable shear stress of core material, the allowable value of panel deflection and the wrinkling stress of faces are adopted, as well as the different boundary conditions. For the engineering purpose of sandwich panel design, the results are tabulated, which are calculated by using the nonlinear optimization technique SUMT.

  • Drift design methods using resizing algorithms have been presented as a practical drift design method since the resizing algorithms proposed easily find drift contribution of each member, called member displacement participation factor, to lateral drift to be designed without calculation of sensitivity coefficient or re-analysis. Weight of material to be redistributed for minimization of the lateral drift is determined according to the member displacement participation factors. However, resizing algorithms based on energy theorem must consider loading conditions because they have different displacement contribution according to different loading conditions. Furthermore, to improve practicality of resizing algorithms, structural member grouping is required in application of resizing algorithms to drift control of high-rise buildings. In this study, three resizing algorithms on considering load condition and structural member grouping are developed and applied to drift design of a 20-story steel-frame shear-wall structure and a 50-story frame shear-wall system with outriggers.
