  • In this article, the force method and Charged System Search (CSS) algorithm are used for the analysis and optimal design of truss structures. The CSS algorithm is employed as the optimization tool and the force method is utilized for analysis. In this paper in addition to member's cross sections, redundant forces, geometry and topology variables are considered as the optimization variables. Minimum complementary energy principle is used directly to analyze the structure. In the presented method, redundant forces are calculated by the CSS in order to minimize the energy function. Combination of the CSS and force method leads to an efficient algorithm in comparison to some of the optimization algorithms.

  • The volume and size of the wind turbine gearbox has been increased with increasing transmitted power. The optimal sizing of gearbox is important due to limited space on the nacelle. The power-split type planetary gear train has been regarded as a better solution than conventional type from the point of view of the volume and weight. The purpose of this paper is to optimize the volume and weight of the gearbox by the analysis of structural characteristics and evaluation of strength of the power-split type planetary gear train.

  • A manufacturing process for a clutch gear which demands high strength and wear resistance, was developed by means of computer simulation. A preform was made by hot forging process and subsequent cold sizing process is applied to complete precise tooth part. Processes to obtain high dimensional accuracy and superior mechanical properties are analyzed and optimal heat treatment cycle to improve cold forgeability is introduced. Prototype was produced and the dimensional accuracy of the prototype was inspected to verify proposed process.

  • Microgrid is generally defined as cluster of small distributed generators, energy storages and loads. Through monitoring and coordinated control, microgrid can provide various benefits such as reduction of energy cost, peak shaving and power quality improvement. In design stage of microgrid, system dynamic simulation is necessary for optimizing of sizing and siting of DER(distributed energy resources). As number of the system components increases, simulation time will be longer. This problem can restrict optimal design. So we used simplified modeling on energy sources and average switching model on power converters to reduce simulation time. The effectiveness of this method is verified by applying to prototype microgrid system, which is consist of photovoltaic, wind power, diesel engine generators, battery energy storage system and loads installed in laboratory. Simulation by Matlab/Simulink and measurements on prototype microgrid show that the proposed method can reduce simulation time not sacrificing dynamic characteristics.

  • Photovoltaic (PV) modules operate over a large range of conditions but manufacturer's information is not sufficient to determine their overall performance. Designers need a reliable tool to predict energy production from a photovoltaic module under all conditions in order to make a sound decision. The modeling method of photovoltaic (PV) module are useful to perform detailed analysis of PV system performance for changing meteorological conditions, verify actual rated power of PV system sizing and determine the optimal design of PV system and components. This paper indicates a modeling approach of PV module performance in terms of meteorological conditions and identifies validity of PV modules modeling by comparing measured with simulated value.

  • This paper proposes a method for determining the number of storage rooms and designing the storage layout in warehouses for pyramid type stacks whose example are slacks for steel coils, paper rolls, and drums for oils. Formulas are derived for estimating the expected values and the variances of various handling times by cranes. From the derived formulas, the expected queuing time of road trucks is estimated. Base on the derived formulas, this study derives the cost function for determining the optimal numbers of rows, bays, and tiers of stacks and sizing cranes under the condition that the requirement for storage space is satisfied. Results of numerical analysis are provided.

  • This paper considers a trade-off effect between in-house storage space and leased storage space in generic warehouses operated under a randomized storage assignment policy. The amount of in-house storage space is determined based on the law of large numbers satisfying a given service level of protection against space shortages. Excess space requirement is assumed to be met via leased storage space. A new analytic model is formulated for determining the excess space such that the total cost of storage space is minimized. Finally, computational results are provided for the systems where the standard economic-order-quantity inventory model is used for all items.

  • There is extensive tubing pipe in the nuclear power plant under high temperature and pressure. Erosion and corrosion defects are expected on this tubing pipe due to environmental and mechanical factors. In this study, Guided Ultrasonic Wave technique was applied to detect defects. The technique explores the advantages of the Guided Ultrasonic Wave method that inspects along the wall of the pipe and can travel long distances, providing rapid collection of data. This paper presents a case study of the Guided Ultrasonic Wave testing of 3/8" tubing pipe. This study offers to understand detected signals through correlation between amplitude and depth of defects.
