  • This paper presents a discrete time optimal asset buying problem with a predetermined final deadline where an available budget is limited. A cost is paid to search for assets called the search cost. A seller who shows up offers a price for the asset and then the buyer decides whether or not to buy the asset by comparing the offered price to his optimal selection threshold. When the budget becomes less than the search cost or the price of the asset the buyer can get a necessary loan with some interests. We clarify the properties of the buyer's optimal selection threshold in order to maximize the expected value of budget which is left after paying all the search costs and the price of the asset at that point in time.

  • The design of efficient search path to maximize the Cumulative Detection Probability(CDP) is mainly dependent on experience and intuition when searcher detect the target using SONAR in the ocean. Recently with the advance of modeling and simulation method, it has been possible to access the optimization problems more systematically. In this paper, a method for the optimal search path calculation is developed based on the combination of the genetic algorithm and the calculation algorithm for detection range. We consider the discrete system for search path, space, and time, and use the movement direction of the SONAR for the gene of the genetic algorithm. The developed algorithm, OASPP(Optimal Acoustic Search Path Planning), is shown to be effective, via a simulation, finding the optimal search path for the case when the intuitive solution exists. Also, OASPP is compared with other algorithms for the measure of efficiency to maximize CDP.

  • It is necessary to develop an efficient optimization technique to perform optimum designs which have given design spaces, discrete design values and several design goals. As optimization techniques, direct search method and stochastic search method are widely used in designing of ship structures. The merit of the direct search method is to search the optimum points rapidly by considering the search direction, step size and convergence limit. And the merit of the stochastic search method is to obtain the global optimum points well by spreading points randomly entire the design spaces. In this paper, Pareto Strategy (PS) multi-objective function method is developed by considering the search direction based on Pareto optimal points, the step size, the convergence limit and the random number generation. The success points between just before and current Pareto optimal points are considered. PS method can also apply to the single objective function problems, and can consider the discrete design variables such as plate thickness, longitudinal space, web height and web space. The optimum design results are compared with existing Random Search (RS) multi-objective function method and Evolutionary Strategy (ES) multi-objective function method by performing the optimum designs of double bottom structure and double hull tanker which have discrete design values. Its superiority and effectiveness are shown by comparing the optimum results with those of RS method and ES method.

  • The goal of this study is simulation of optimal search pattern of ships based on performance surface which are reflected underwater environmental. The process is as follows. First, temporal and spatial environmental database are extracted in complex environment and input hull mounted SONAR system parameters. The environmental database and SONAR system parameters are substituted to SONAR equations, and calculate signal excess, detection probability, detection range. And then, the performance surface, which can be used to provide operational insight of SONAR detection performance, are pictorialized. Finally, optimal search pattern of ships are simulated using genetic algorithm based on performance surface. And then, we certify optimal search pattern in various ways.

  • In this study, a hybrid method is used to search the pseudo-optimal solution for the I-dimentional nesting problem. This method is composed of the genetic algorithm for the global search and a simple heuristic one for the local search near the pseudo optimal solution. Several simulation results show that the hybrid method gives very satisfactory results.

  • Among spatial queries handled in spatial database systems, nearest neighbor queries to find the nearest spatial object from the given locaion occur frequently. The number of searched nodes in an index must be minimized in order to increase the performance of nearest neighbor queries. An Existing approach considered only the processing of an nearest neighbor query in a two-dimensional search space and could not optimize the number of searched nodes accurately. In this paper, we propose the optimal search distance and prove its properties. The proposed optimal search distance is the measurement of a new search distance for accurately selecting the nodes which will be searched in processing nearest neighbor queries. We present an algorithm for processing the nearest neighbor query by applying the optimal search distance to R-trees and prove that the result of query processing is correcter than the existing approach.

  • The most optimal route-search algorithm thus far has introduced a method of applying node labels and link labels. Node labels consider two nodes simultaneously in the optimal route-search process, while link labels consider two links simultaneously. This study proposes a turn-label-based optimal route-search technique that considers two turns simultaneously in the process. Turn-label-based optimal route search guarantees the optimal solution of dynamic programming based on Bellman's principle as it considers a two-turn search process. Turn-label-based optimal route search can accommodate the advantages of applying link labels because the concept of approaching the limit of link labels is applied equally. Therefore, it is possible to reflect rational cyclic traffic where nodes allow multiple visits without expanding the network, while links do not allow visits. In particular, it reflects the additional cost structure that appears in two consecutive turns, making it possible to express the structure of the travel-cost function more flexibly. A case study was conducted on the metropolitan urban railway network consisting of transportation card terminal readers, aiming to examine the scalability of the research by introducing parameters that reflect psychological resistance in travel with continuous pedestrian transfers into turn label optimal path search. Simulation results showed that it is possible to avoid conservative transfers even if the travel time and distance increase as the psychological resistance value for continuous turns increases, confirming the need to reflect the cost structure of turn labels. Nevertheless, further research is needed to secure diversity in the travel-cost functions of road and public-transportation networks.

  • In this paper, a hybridization of Evolutionary Strategy (ES) and a Two-Phase Neural Network(TPNN) is applied to the optimal environmental and economic operation. As the evolutionary computation, ES is to search for the global optimum based on natural selection and genetics but it shows a defect of reducing the convergence rate in the latter part of search, and often does not search the exact solution. Also, neural network theory as a local search technique can be used to search a more exact solution. But it also has the defect that a solution frequently sticks to the local region. So, new algorithm is presented as hybrid methods by combining merits of two methods. The hybrid algorithm has been tested on Emission Constrained Economic Dispatch (ECED) problem and Weighted Emission Economic Dispatch (WEED) problem for optimal environmental and economic operation. The result indicated that the hybrid approach can outperform the other computational efficiency and accuracy.

  • In this paper, we propose a destination optimal route algorithm for providing route finding service for the transportation handicapped by using the multi-criteria decision-making technique and the modified A-STAR optimal route search algorithm. This is a method to set the route to the destination centering on safety by replacing the distance cost of the existing A-STAR optimal route search algorithm with the safety cost calculated through AHP/TOPSIS analysis. To this end, 10 factors such as road damage, curb, and road hole were first classified as poor road factors that hinder road driving, and then pairwise comparison of AHP was analyzed and then defined as the weight of TOPSIS. Afterwards, the degree of driving safety was quantified for a certain road section in Busan through TOPSIS analysis, and the development of an optimal route search algorithm for the transportation handicapped that replaces the distance cost with safety in the finally modified A-STAR optimal route algorithm was completed.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the grid search method for selecting an optimal decision tree model. It chooses optimal values for the maximum depth of tree and the minimum number of observations that must exist in a node in order for a split to be attempted. Therefore, the grid search method guarantees building a decision tree model that shows more precise and stable classifying performance. Through empirical analysis using data of job satisfaction of workplace reserve force commanders, we show that the grid search method helps us generate an optimal decision tree model that gives us hints for the improvement direction of labor conditions of Korean workplace reserve force commanders.
