A fast optimization algorithm has been evolved from a simple two stage optimal power flow(OPF) algorithm for constrained power economic dispatch. In the proposed algorithm, we consider various constraints such as power balance, generation capacity, transmission line capacity, transmission losses, security equality, and security inequality constraints. The proposed algorithm consists of four stages. At the first stage, we solve the aggregated problem that is the crude classical economic dispatch problem without considering transmission losses. An initial solution is obtained by the aggregation concept in which the solution satisfies the power balance equations and generation capacity constraints. Then, after load flow analysis, the transmission losses of an initial generation setting are matched by the slack bus generator that produces power with the cheapest cost. At the second stage we consider transmission losses. Formulation of the second stage becomes classical economic dispatch problem involving the transmission losses, which are distributed to all generators. Once a feasible solution is obtained from the second stage, transmission capacity and other violations are checked and corrected locally and quickly at the third stage. The fourth stage fine tunes the solution of the third stage to reach a real minimum. The proposed approach speeds up the coupled LP based OPF method to an average gain of 53.13 for IEEE 30, 57, and 118 bus systems and EPRI Scenario systems A through D testings.
Contents 1 Abstract- In the thermal power plant, there are six manipulated variables; main steam flow, feedwater flow, air flow, spray flow, fuel flow, and gas recirculation flow. Therefore, the thermal power plant control system is a multi-input and output system. In the control system, the main steam temperature typically is regulated by the fuel flow rate and the spray flow rate, and the reheater steam temperature is regulated by the gas recirculation flow rate. Up to the present time, the PID controller has been used to operate this system. This paper focuses on the characteristic comparison of the PID controller, the modified 2-DOF PID Controller on the DCS, in order to design an optimal...

This paper presents a optimal power flow calculation algorithm considering voltage and transient stability. In this method, voltage stability margin and transient stability constraints is incorporated into a optimal power flow calculation formulation to guarantee adequate voltage and transient security levels in power system. The proposed method is applied to IEEE-24 Reliability Test System and the results shows the effectiveness of the method.

The nodal marginal cost and the congestion charge are used as the econimic signals for the electricity price and new invetments in deregulated power systems. In this paper, the nodal marginal cost and the congestion charge are calculated by using the shadow prices resulted from the calculation of Optimal Power Flow(OPF). Linearization of inequality constraints and piecewise linear cost functions make an OPF problem LP-based forms. In order to use the shadow price, the Interior Point(IP) algorithm is applied as a solution technique to the formulation. This paper proposes an algorithm to determine efficients initial points which are guaranteed to be interior points.

In this paper, we propose that the SCOPF be solved in a decentralized framework, consisting of regions, using a price-based mechanism. We first solve the distributed OPF problem to determine the maximum secure simultaneous transfer capability of each tie-line between adjacent regions by taking only the security constraints imposed on the tie-lines into account. And then, the regional SCOPF is performed using the conventional LP approach. A description on the inclusion of security constraints with distributed OPF algorithm will be given, folowed by a case study for Korea power system.

In the power-system, the active and reactive power levels of load bus randomly vary over days, months, and years which are stochastic in nature. This paper presents an algorithm for optimal Var planning considering the uncertainties of loads. The optimization problem is solved by a stochastic linear programming technique which can handle stochastic constraints to evaluate optimal Var requirement at load bus to maintain the voltage profile which results in probabilistic density function by stochastic Load Flow analysis within admissible range. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been verified by the test on the IEEE-30 bus system.
We examined the optimal shape of blades and efficiency of a self-power generator when the self-power generator using flow of the water in pipe as the power source was installed. Selected factors were the shape of blades, the number of blades, pitch angle, and the existence of separator. GAMBIT2.4 was used as a modeling program, FLUENT6.3, which is computational fluid dynamics simulation program, was used as an analytical model. In the case of a viscous model, k-epsilon standard model was chosen. As a result, when the number of blades was increased, the efficiency and maximum moment were enhanced slightly. The pitch of blades went up, and maximum moment was also increased. The optimal pitch of blade was 62.5 degree and the efficiency was increased by 30%. The efficiency was also increased when a separator was installed.
We consider a power controlled code division multiple access (CDMA) system with multiple flow types. At each of the N nodes, there are F flow types with different signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio (SINR) requirements. To keep the complexity of the transmitter low, we assume that each node uses the same power level for all its flows. The single flow case has been fully solved and is well-understood. We concentrate on the multiple flow case, and use a novel and different approach. For the uplink problem with N = 2 and F arbitrary, the necessary and sufficient conditions to have a solution are found and proved. For the general N > 1 uplink problem, we provide a necessary condition for the problem to have a solution and an iterative algorithm to find the optimum solution. For the downlink case with F > 1 some properties of the optimal sequences are obtained.
The flexible AC transmissions system (FACTS) is the underpinning concept upon which are based promising means to avoid effectively power flow bottlenecks and ways to extend the loadability of existing power transmission networks. This paper proposes a method by which the optimal locations of the FACTS to be installed in power system under cost function. The optimal solution of this type of problem requires large scale nonlinear optimisation techniques. We used Lagrange multipliers to solve a nonlinear equation with equality and ineaquality constraints. Case studies on the standard IEEE 14 bus system show that the method can be implemented successfully and that it is effective for determining the optimal location of the FACTS
This paper deals with shunt compensation to eliminate voltage violation and enhance transfer capability, which is motivated towards implementation in the Korean power system. The optimal shunt compensation algorithm has demonstrated its effectiveness in terms of voltage accuracy and reducing the number of actions of reactive power compensating devices. The main shunt compensation devices are capacitor and reactor. Effects of control devices are evaluated by cost computations. The control objective at present is to keep the voltage profile of a key bus within constraints with minimum switching cost. A robust control strategy is proposed to make the control feasible and optimal for a set of power-flow cases that may occurs important event from system. Case studies with metropolitan area of the Korean power system are presented to illustrate the method.
