  • In this study, the optimization of the overall dimensions of an automobile bumper was investigated through CAE and experiment using the Six Sigma method and design of experiment (DOE) method, respectively. Injection pressure, injection speed, injection time, cooling time, holding time, injection temperature, and holding pressure were selected as the vital parameters affecting the overall width of product through analysis of trivial many using CAE. The optimal values were determined using the DOE method, and we analyzed the improvement by applying the optimal conditions to the production process. As a result, the mean value of the overall width was close to the target value, with a deviation of 0.05mm, and the processability and I-MR control were remarkably improved. Finally, the dimension pass rate of the product improved by 20%.

  • State estimation of power systems has become vital in recent days of power operation and control. SCADA and EMS are intended for the state estimation and to communicate and monitor the systems which are operated at specified time. Although various methods are used we can achieve the better results by using PMU technique. On placing the PMU, operating time is reduced and making the performance reliable. In this paper, PMU placement is done in two ways. Those are 'optimal technique with pruning operation' and 'depth of unobservability' considering incomplete and complete observability of a network. By Depth of Unobservability Number of PMUs are reduced to attain Observability of the network. Proposed methods are tested on IEEE 14, 30, 57, SR-system and Sub systems (1, 2) with bus size of 270 and 444 buses. Along with achieving complete observability analysis, single PMU loss condition is also achieved.

  • This paper presents an investigation on the properties of two types of cement kiln dust (CKD)-stabilized dredged sediments, silt and clay with a comparison to hydrated lime stabilization. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and California bearing ratio (CBR) tests were conducted to examine the optimal stabilizer content and classify the type of highway material. A strength development model of treated dredged sediments was performed. The influences of various stabilizer types and sediment types on UCS were interpreted with the aid of microstructural observations, including X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analysis. The results of the tests revealed that 6% of lime by dry weight can be suggested as optimal content for the improvement of clay and silt as selected materials. For CKD-stabilized sediment as soil cement subbase material, the use of 8% CKD was suggested as optimal content for clay, whereas 6% CKD was recommended for silt; the overall CBR value agreed with the UCS test. The reaction products calcium silicate hydrate and ettringite are the controlling mechanisms for the mechanical performance of CKD-stabilized sediments, whereas calcium aluminate hydrate is the control for lime-stabilized sediments. These results will contribute to the use of CKD as a sustainable and novel stabilizer for lime in highway material applications.

  • Ocean energy is one of the most promising renewable energy resources. In particular, South Korea is one of the countries where it is economically and technically feasible to develop tidal current power plants to use tidal current energy. In this study, based on the design code for HARP_Opt (Horizontal axis rotor performance optimizer) developed by NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) in the United States, and applying the BEMT (Blade element momentum theory) and GA (Genetic algorithm), the optimal shape design and performance evaluation of the horizontal axis rotor for a 200-kW-class tidal current turbine were performed using different numbers of blades (two or three) and a pitch control method (variable pitch or fixed pitch). As a result, the VSFP (Variable Speed Fixed Pitch) turbine with three blades showed the best performance. However, the performances of four different cases did not show significant differences. Hence, it is necessary when selecting the final design to consider the structural integrity related to the fatigue, along with the economic feasibility of manufacturing the blades.

  • A rule was developed to constrain the annual rate of inbreeding to a predefined value in a population with different lifetimes between sires and dams, and to maximize the selection response over generations. This rule considers that the animals in a population should be divided into sex-age classes based on the theory of gene flow, and restricts the increase of average inbreeding coefficient for new offspring by limiting the increase of the mean additive genetic relationship for parents selected. The optimization problem of this rule was formulated as a quadratic programming problem. Inputs for the rule were the BLUP estimated breeding values, the additive genetic relationship matrix of all animals, and the long-term contributions of sex-age classes. Outputs were optimal number and contributions of selected animals. In addition, this rule was combined with the optimization of emphasis given to QTL, and further increased the genetic gain over the planning horizon. Stochastic simulations of closed nucleus schemes for pigs were used to investigate the potential advantages obtained from this rule by combining the standard QTL selection, optimal QTL selection and conventional BLUP selection. Results showed that the predefined rates of inbreeding were actually achieved by this rule in three selection strategies. The rule obtained up to 9.23% extra genetic gain over truncation selection at the same rates of inbreeding. The combination of the extended rule and the optimization of emphasis given to QTL allowed substantial increases in selection response at a fixed annual rate of inbreeding, and solved substantially the conflict between short-term and long-term selection response in QTL-assisted selection schemes.

  • In this paper, an algorithm to increase the shift speed is suggested by increasing the line pressure for a metal belt CVT. In order to control the shift speed, an algorithm to calculate the target shift speed is presented from the modified CVT shift dynamics. In applying the shift speed control algorithm, a criterion is proposed to prevent the excessive hydraulic loss due to the increased line pressure. Simulations are performed based on the dynamic models of the hydraulic control valves, powertrain and the vehicle. It is found from the simulation results that performance of the engine operation can be improved by the faster shift speed, which results in the improved fuel economy by 2% compared with that of the conventional electronic control CVT in spite of the increased hydraulic loss due to the increased line pressure.

  • In this paper, modified discrete time preview control algorithms for active and semi-active suspension systems are derived based on a simple mathematical 4 DOF half-car model. The discrete time preview control laws for ride comfort are employed in the simulation. The algorithms for MIMO system contain control strategies reacting against body forces that occur at cornering, accelerating, braking, or under payload, in addition to road disturbances. Matlab simulation results for the discrete time case are compared with those for the continuous time case and the appropriateness of the discrete time algorithms are verified by the of simulation results. Passive, active, and semi-active system responses to a sinusoidal input and an asphalt road input are analysed and evaluated. The simulation results show the extent of performance degradation due to numerical errors related to the length of the sampling time and time delay.

  • The vibrational intensity and the dynamic response of a compound vibratory system had been controlled actively by means of a feedforward control method. A compound vibratory system consists of a flexible beam and two discrete systems - a vibrating source and a dynamic absorber. By considering the interactive motions between discrete systems and a flexible beam, the equations of motion for a compound vibratory system were derived using a method of variation of parameters. To define the optimal conditions of a controller the cost function, which denotes a time averaged power flow, was evaluated numerically. The possibility of reductions of both of vibrational intensity and dynamic response at a control point located at a distance from a source were fecund to depend on the positions of a source, a control point and a controller. Especially the presence of a dynamic absorber gives the more reduction on the dynamic response but the less on the vibrational intensity than those without a dynamic absorber.

  • The recent amount of container freight continuously has been increased, but the low efficiency of container crane causes jamming frequently in transportation and cargo handling at port. It is required that the working velocity and safety are improved by control of moving the trolley as quick as possible without large overshoot and any residual swing motion of container at the destination. In this paper, a LQ controller for a container crane is proposed to accomplish an optimal design of improved control system for minimizing the swing motion at destination. In this scheme a mathematical model for the system is obtained in state space form. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified through computer simulation.
