In this paper, skyhook control of a semi-active ER(Electro-Rheological) damper is investigated. The strength of the ER damper is controlled by a high voltage power supply. This paper deals with a two-degree-of-freedom suspension using the damper with ERF for a quarter vehicle system. The control law for semi-active suspensions modeled in this study is developed using skyhook and Linear Quadratic Regulator(LQR) optimal control method. Computer simulation and experimental results show that the semi-active suspension with ERF damper has good performances of ride quality.

Manufacturing data analysis and its applications are getting a huge popularity in various industries. In spite of the fast advancement in the big data analysis technology, however, the manufacturing quality data monitored from the automated inspection system sometimes is not reliable enough due to the complex patterns of product quality. In this study, thus, we aim to define the level of trusty of an automated quality inspection system and improve the reliability of the quality inspection data. By correlation analysis and feature selection, this paper presents a method of improving the inspection accuracy and efficiency in an SVM-based automatic product quality inspection system using thermal image data in an auto part manufacturing case. The proposed method is implemented in the sealer dispensing process of the automobile manufacturing and verified by the analysis of the optimal feature selection from the quality analysis results.

This paper presents an approach to implement the behaviors of multi-robots responding to user's input characters. The robots are appropriately displaced to express any input characters. Using our method, any user can easily and friendly control multirobots. The responses of the robots to the user's input are intuitive. We utilize the centroidal Voronoi algorithm and the continuoustime Lloyd algorithm, which have popularly been used for the optimal sensing coverage problems. Collision protection is considered to be applied for real robots. LED sensors are used to identify positions of multi-robots. Our approach is evaluated through experiments with five mobile robots. When a user draw alphabets, the robots are deployed correspondingly. By checking position errors, the feasibility of our method is validated.
In this paper, an efficient short-time Fourier analysis method for the quasi-periodic signals is proposed via an optimal fixed-lag finite impulse response (FIR) smoother approach using a receding horizon scheme. In order to deal with time-varying Fourier coefficients (FCs) of quasi-periodic signals, a state space model including FCs as state variables is augmented with the variants of FCs. Through an optimal fixed-lag FIR smoother, FCs and their increments are estimated simultaneously and combined to produce final estimates. A lag size of the optimal fixed-lag FIR smoother is chosen to minimize the estimation error. Since the proposed estimation scheme carries out the correction process with the estimated variants of FCs, it is highly probable that the smaller estimation error is achieved compared with existing approaches not making use of such a process. It is shown through numerical simulation that the proposed scheme has better tracking ability for estimating time-varying FCs compared with existing ones.
This paper describes an optimal design technology in a segment type vertical guide bearing for vertical rotating machinery. Segment type vertical guide bearings have widely used for vertical rotating machinery, however bearing problems, such as excessive vibration and temperature rise, frequently take place in the actual machine. Such excessive vibration magnitude and/or abnormal bearing metal temperature rise result in serious damage and economic losses. Thus the segment type vertical guide bearing should be designed to get optimal characteristics in order to maintain stable operation without bearing failure due to abnormal vibration and/or abnormal bearing metal temperature. The preload ratio is the most important parameter in designing the segment type vertical guide bearing. Because adjustment of the bearing preload by changing the bearing clearance could easily control both the bearing stiffness and the cooling effect. In the paper, the influence of the preload effects on the bearing metal temperature and the bearing stiffness has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally in order to find out an optimum preload ratio. Results show that the segment type vertical guide bearing has an optimum preload ratio at which the bearing stiffness reaches a masimum value while the bearing metal temperature is minimized.

The presence of responsive loads in the promising active distribution networks (ADNs) would definitely affect the power system problems such as distributed generations (DGs) studies. Hence, an optimal procedure is proposed herein which takes into account the simultaneous placement of DGs and smart meters (SMs) in ADNs. SMs are taken into consideration for the sake of successful implementing of demand response programs (DRPs) such as direct load control (DLC) with end-side consumers. Seeking to power loss minimization, the optimization procedure is tackled with genetic algorithm (GA) and tested thoroughly on 69-bus distribution test system. Different scenarios including variations in the number of DG units, adaptive power factor (APF) mode for DGs to support reactive power, and individual or simultaneous placing of DGs and SMs have been established and interrogated in depth. The obtained results certify the considerable effect of DRPs and APF mode in determining the optimal size and site of DGs to be connected in ADN resulting to the lowest value of power losses as well.
By development of renewable energy and more efficient facilities in an increasingly deregulated electricity market, the operation cost of distributed generation (DG) is becoming more competitive. International environmental regulations of the leaking carbon become effective to reinforce global efforts for a low-carbon paradigm. Through increased DG, operators of DG are able to supply electric power to customers who are connected directly to DG as well as loads that are connected to entire network. In this situation, a community energy system (CES) with DGs is a new participant in the energy market. DG's purchase price from the market is different from the DG's sales price to the market due to transmission service charges and other costs. Therefore, CES who owns DGs has to control the produced electric power per hourly period in order to maximize profit. Considering the international environment regulations, CE will be an important element to decide the marginal cost of generators as well as the classified fuel unit cost and unit's efficiency. This paper introduces the optimal operation of CES's DG connected to the distribution network considering CE. The purpose of optimization is to maximize the profit of CES. A Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) will be used to solve this complicated problem. The optimal operation of DG represented in this paper would guide CES and system operators in determining the decision making criteria.

To ensure safe port operations around the world, it is important to solve mooring problems. In particular, the many ports that face open seas have difficulties with long-period waves. As a countermeasure, the installation of a breakwater is proposed for mooring safety. However, this often cannot be put into practice because of financial issues. Instead, port terminals control berthing schedules with weather forecasting. However, mooring problems remain unsolved, because of inaccurate wave forecasting. To quantify the current situation, numerical simulations are presented with ship motions, fender deflections, and rope tensions. In addition, novel simulations for mooring ropes are proposed considering tension, friction, bending fatigue, and temperature. With this novel simulation, the optimal mooring method in terms of safety and economic efficiency was confirmed. In terms of safety, the optimal mooring method is verified to minimize dangerous mooring situations. Moreover, the optimal mooring method shows economic benefits and efficiency. It can help to reinforce the safety of port terminals and improve the efficiency of port operations.
This paper presents a centralized control algorithm for power system performance in the Korean power system using Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices. The algorithm is applied to the Korean power system throughout the metropolitan area in order to alleviate inherent stability problems, especially concerns with voltage stability. Generally, control strategies are divided into local and centralized control. This paper is concerned with a centralized control strategy in terms of the global system. In this research, input data of the proposed algorithm and network data are obtained from the SCADA/EMS system. Using the full system model, the centralized controller monitors the system condition and decides the operating point according to the control objectives that are, in turn, dependent on system conditions. To overcome voltage collapse problems, load-shedding is currently applied in the Korean power system. In this study, the application of the coordination between FACTS and switch capacitor (SC) can restore the solvability without load shedding or guarantee the FV margin when the margin is insufficient. Optimal Power Flow (OPF) algorithm, for which the objective function is loss minimization, is used in a stable case. The results illustrate examples of the proposed algorithm using SCADA/EMS data of the Korean power system in 2007.

Power control is widely used to reduce co-channel interference in wireless networks and guarantee the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of ongoing connections. This technique is also effective for wireless body area networks (WBANs). Although achieving satisfactory SINR is important for WBAN users, they may not be willing to achieve it at arbitrarily high power levels since power is a scarce resource in WBANs. Besides, for WBANs with different purposes, the QoS requirements and concern about the power consumption may be different. This motivates us to formulate the power control problem using the concepts from microeconomics and game theory. In this paper, the QoS objective is viewed as a utility function, which represents the degree of user satisfaction, while the power consumption is viewed as a cost function. The power control problem consequently becomes a non-cooperative multiplayer game, in which each player tries to maximize its net utility, i.e., the utility minus the cost. Within this framework, we investigate the Nash equilibrium existence and uniqueness in the game and derive the best response solution to reach the Nash equilibrium. To obtain the optimal transmission power in a distributed way, we further propose a utility-based and QoS-aware power control algorithm (UQoS-PCA). Tunable cost coefficient in UQoS-PCA enables this scheme to be flexible to satisfy diverse service requirements. Simulation results show the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed scheme as well as improvements over existing algorithm.
