  • In this paper, we study the performances of optical system design using the 1 panel LCD without color filter for projection color television. We analyze the optical efficiency compare this system with 1 panel LCD system using the color filter, and work out a constraint condition of 1 panel LCD without color filter for optical design. We design a high brightness 1 panel optical system using a complex reflection mirror and suggest a method of the optical system design.

  • A development of in-process and reliable monitoring system in laser materials processing is essential for successful applications toward the real industrial fields. It was known that optical signals induced by laser-matter interactions provide a good indication not only to monitor various defects but also to characterize and identify the process However there are still difficulties to implement the optical monitoring system in real fields since the system is susceptible to the spurious change of the signal affected by the variation of experimental conditions and environmental noises. In this article. a new type of optical monitoring technique named 'chromatic modulation technique' is described as a reliable, robust and sensitive monitor for the applications in laser materials processing in order to tackle the conventional problems in optical system.

  • In this study. a technical report management system using optical technology is described in detail. This management system is designed for both bibliographic (character) and full-text (image) information. Several optical filing systems already on the Korean market are scrutinized and compared with standard functions in order to build a more efficient management system for technical reports which can be easily integrated into existing KRISS library automation system. For that purpose, up-to-date technologies (i.e., digital image PI-ocessing (DIP), MARC standards, and optical character recognition (OCR), etc.) are applied to this system.

  • In this paper, for low cost infrared optical equipment, we design and fabricate an infrared optical system for an uncooled detector using PGM(Precision Glass Molding) lenses. The designed infrared optical system has a good athermalization, and the material of all of its lenses is a chalcogenide glass suitable for the PGM method. In addition, we also fabricate the same infrared optical system using SPDT(Single Point Diamond Turning) lenses in order to measure the optical performance of PGM lenses. We measure the MTF(Modulation Transfer Function) of the two infrared optical systems which use the PGM lenses and the SPDT lenses. And then we compare and analyze the images of them both. As a result, we find that they have only a very small difference in optical performance. If the use of PGM lenses increases, we expect to reduce the cost of infrared optical equipment.

  • We demonstrate a novel all-optical packet switching system that is suitable for optical ring networks. For the demonstration, video signals are encoded into optical packets which are composed of header and payload. The optical packets are all-optically processed at a switching node based on all-optical header processor, packet-level clock extraction, bit-level clock extraction, all-optical data format converter and so on.

  • Telescope structure based on Korsch type optical layout was suggested for a large aperture optical system. Korsch type optical layout is regarded as providing wide field of view and no color aberration for which high resolution space cameras greatly demand. For the suggested Korsch type telescope structure, two folding mirrors are adopted, firstly to provide for the refocusing device mounting plane on the second fold mirror assembly, secondly by double folding the light path to concisely confine focal plane assembly within the perimeter of the tube. Optical layput design and corresponding support structure design were attained.

  • Optical filters in WDM are passive communication components used in case of transmitting and reflecting lights with specific wavelengths. In this paper, a novel mechanism for the automatic and optical alignment has been presented. It includes minimum axes not to be coupled each other. The automatic spectrum inspection system has been developed to improve the alignment time of reference optical ray, spectrum inspection time and inspection quality, simultaneously. It has been confirmed that the proposed spectrum inspection system is faster, more precise and more reliable than those based on the conventional handwork.

  • We have developed a near real-time flare alerting system which (1) downloads the latest GOES-l0 1-8 ${\AA}$ X-ray flux 1-min data by an automated ftp program and shell scripts, (2) produces a beep sound in a simple IDL widget program when the flux is larger than a critical value, and (3) makes it possible to do a wireless alerting by a set of portable transceivers. Thanks to the system, we have made successful Ha flare observations by the Solar Flare Telescope in Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory. This system is expected to be helpful for ground-based flare observers.

  • This paper describes a development of a fiber optic common-path optical coherence tomography (OCT) based imaging and guided system that possess ability to reliably identify optically transparent targets that are on the micron scale; ability to maintain a precise and safe position from the target; ability to provide spectroscopic imaging; ability to imaging biological target in 3-D. The system is based on a high resolution fiber optic Common-Path OCT (CP-OCT) that can be integrated into various mini-probes and tools. The system is capable of obtaining >70K A-scan per second with a resolution better than $3\;{\mu}m$. We have demonstrated that the system is capable of one-dimensional real-time depth tracking, tool motion limiting and motion compensation, oxygen-saturation level imaging, and high resolution 3-D images for various biomedical applications.
