Mach-Zehnder Type Tandem Optical Switch/Modulator using a Single-Mode Interconnecting Waveguide and Its Switching Characteristics

  • In this paper, an optical switch/modulator is designed and its light propagating characteristics analyzed using a simplified BPM. The distinctive feature of this switch/modulator is that all its waveguide branches are designed as single-mode. The principle of the device is based on the coupled mode theory in the Y-junction interconnecting waveguide. In spite of the fact all waveguides are designed as single-mode, by adjusting the interconnecting waveguide length'of the device the same characteristics as existing up to date devices are obtainable. Numerical results show that the switching characteristics periodically depend upon an interconnecting waveguide length with a spatial of about $150^{{\mu}m}$ in the $Ti:LiNbO_3$ step index waveguide. The design concept would therefore be utilized effectively in fabricating a monolithic high density optical integrated circuit.

  • We demonstrated a polarization dependent type 2$\times$2 optical switch, using a binary reflection type SLM. Reflection type FLC was used as a half wave retardation plate. Two inputs were controlled by each SLM for the desired output direction. In conclusion, in the "1" state the average optical loss was 6.6 ㏈, and in the "0" state the average optical loss was 14.6 ㏈, and measured the switching speed as 75 $mutextrm{s}$. By using this method, a polarization dependent type 2$\times$2 optical switch can be demonstrated and the possibility of a 4-port WDM optical switch also verified.

X-band Microwave Photonic Filter Using Switch-based Fiber-Optic Delay Lines

  • An X-band microwave photonic (MWP) filter using switch-based fiber-optic delay lines has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It is composed of two electro-optic modulators (EOMs) and $2{\times}2$ optical MEMS-switch-based fiber-optic delay lines. By changing time-delay difference and coefficients of each wavelength signal by using fiber-optic delay lines and an electro-optic modulator, respectively, a bandpass filter or a notch filter can be implemented. For an X-band MWP filter with four channel elements, fiber-optic delay lines with the unit time-delay of 50 ps have been experimentally realized and the frequency responses corresponding to the time-delays has been measured. The measured frequency response error at center frequency and the time-delay difference error were 180 MHz at 10 GHz and 3.2 ps, respectively, when the fiber-optic delay line has the time-delay difference of 50 ps.

  • Y-branch directional coupler type optical modulators with three different coupling lengths were fabricated on z-cut LiNbO3 and tested at λ-1.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. One device gad an exact coupling length for complete power transfer and two other devices had coupling lengths. It was confirmed that, for dc operation, experimental results agreed well with theoretical results.

  • A optical switch which on the LiNbO$_3$substrate is fabricated by using proton exchange method and self-alignet method. The annealing at 400[$^{\circ}C$] was carried out to control waveguide width and depth. A self-aligned method, which doesn\`t need the additional mask precesses, was applied to simplify the fabrication processes and to maximize efficiency of electric field application. The depths of the two annealed optical waveguides, which were measured by using ${\alpha}$-step, ware 1.435[K${\AA}$] and 1,380[K${\AA}$]. Using ${\alpha}$-step facility, we examined that the width of waveguides is increased from 5[$\mu\textrm{m}$] to 6.45[$\mu\textrm{m}$] and 6.3[$\mu\textrm{m}$] due to the annealing effects. The process of proton exchange was done at 400[$^{\circ}C$] for 60[min] and annealing process was done at 400[$^{\circ}C$] for 60[min]. The high speed optical modulator has very good figures of merits: the measured voltage of the input waveguide power is 3.5[V], the voltage of the coupling waveguide power is 3.9[mV], and -29.5[dB] crosstalk and 8[V] switching voltage were achieved.
