  • NASA and Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) have been collaborated to develop the Space solar coronagraph instrument to detect the solar wind speed and corona temperature. As an intermediate stage, BITSE is the Balloon-Borne instrument to prove our proposed technical method which uses a polarized light in 4 different bandwidth wavelengths. In the presentation, the optical design based on the requirements, tests and alignment process for integrating the system are discussed.

  • According to the national space program in Korea, is satellites will be launch into space up to 2015. Especially, KARI is going to develope of its own a high resolution camera of less than 1m to be mounted on next Multipurpose Satellite. When performing testing of large spacecraft or hardware that will be launched into orbit, it is necessary to conduct a testing with space-simulated environment. To achieve this requirement, thermal vacuum chamber is generally used. KARI has been developed a very Large Thermal Vacuum Chamber(LTVC) from 2003 to accomodate future space program, such as KOMPSAT, COMS, and Launch vehicles. This new facility will be used to qualify the first self developed High Resolution Camera, which will be loaded on KOMPSAT-3. To perform an optical test for space camera, it is necessary to provide vibration free environment. Thus the vibration responses on the optical table due to external vibration should be minimized by using a special isolation system. In this paper, we propose the concept design of vibration isolation system for the development of the high resolution camera.

  • Far-ultraviolet IMaging Spectrograph (FIMS) is under development as the main pay-load of the first Korean science satellite, KAISTSAT-4. An extensive sensitivity and error budget analyses of FIMS optical system have been performed. As an way of estimating aggregate effects of all tolerances, a Monte Carlo simulation is used. The simulation result shows that the optical performance required from the science objectives is achieved within the probability higher than 99.9%.

  • The ADF-S (AKARI Deep Field - South) toward South Ecliptic Pole is one of the deep survey fields designed for the study of Extragalactic Background Light (EBL). The deep extragalactic survey was initiated by AKARI far-infrared deep observations. Other space missions (e.g., Euclid, NISS, SPHEREx) will perform the deep observations in the ADF-S. Based upon the recent optical survey with KMTNet, we can identify the optical counterparts for dusty star-forming galaxies such as ULIRG, DOG, SMG. Among them, the Dust-Obscured Galaxies (hereafter DOGs with f(24um)/f(R) > 1,000) in the heavily obscured system are expected to play an important role in the formation of most massive galaxies. We have newly discovered ~100 DOGs in ~12 sq. deg. of the ADF-S from our optical survey with KMTNet. We also confirmed that some of DOGs host the most luminous AGN for their black hole masses through the near-infrared spectroscopic follow-ups. Here, we report the properties of high-z hyperluminous DOGs in the ADF-S.

  • We developed the equipment to measure the MTF(modulation transfer function) of an optical system for automatically inspecting the surface condition of an LCD substrate. We have made an object generator with USAF(United States Air Force) targets of three bar patterns and an integrating sphere, and an image analyzer with a 2 dimensional CCD(charge coupled device) and a relay lens. The MTF of the lens under test was obtained by correcting the measured CTF(contrast transfer function) which is the ratio of the contrast in the image of the USAF target to the contrast in the object. We have measured an optical system of F/13.65 (2.6x), the MTF are 30.6 % tangential plane and 26.1 % sagittal plane at 62.5 1p/mm.

  • Many technical challenges are being tried for a large space infrared telescope, which is one of the major objectives of the Strategic Technology Road Map (STRM) of KASI (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute), As one of these challenges, KASI and KBSI (Korea Basic Science Institute) have started a cooperation project for developing a space infrared cryogenic system with KIMM (Korea Institute of Machinery as Materials) and i3system co. In this paper, we generate optical requirements for the Protomodel of Space Infrared Cryogenic System (PSICS), and design a single lens optical system with a bandpass of $3.8\~4.8{\mu}m$, a field of view of $15^{\circ}\times12^{\circ}$, and an angular resolution of $0.047^{\circ}$, to develop a further complex optical system.

  • The SMT is a subsystem of the UFFO (Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory) pathfinder onboard the Lomonosov spacecraft planed to be launched in November 2011. The UFFO is designed for extremely fast observation of optical afterglow of Gamma Ray Burst (GRB). This study is primarily concerned with performance measurement of the SMT optical system under the integration and test phase. SMT is a 100mm Ritchey-Chretien type telescope with a motorized slewing mirror and a $256{\times}256$ pixels Intensified Charge-Coupled Device (ICCD) of 22.2${\mu}m$ in pixel size. SMT is designed to operate over the wavelength coverage between 200 nm and 650 nm. It has 17 arcmin FOV (Field of View), providing 4arcsec in detector pixel resolution. In this study, we describe the integration and test process of the SMT optical system and interim performance measurement results with motorized slewing mirror and ICCD.

  • Optical interferometry and polarimetry have separately provided new insights into stellar astronomy, especially in the fields of fundamental parameters and atmospheric models. We present: scientific justifications for "full-Stokes" optical interferometric polarimetry (OIP); updated instrument requirements; preliminary beam combiner designs; polarimeter design; end-to-end OIP data reduction; and realistic reimaged full-Stokes models of Be stars with a suitable number of telescopes plus noise sources. All of this work represents preliminary research to construct an OIP beam combiner.
