  • Optical diffuse reflectance sensing in visible and near-infrared wavelength ranges is one approach to rapidly quantify soil properties for site-specific management. The objectives of this study were to investigate effects of preprocessing of reflectance data and determine the accuracy of the reflectance approach for estimating physical and chemical properties of selected Missouri and Illinois, USA surface soils encompassing a wide range of soil types and textures. Diffuse reflectance spectra of air-dried, sieved samples were obtained in the laboratory. Calibrations relating spectra to soil properties determined by standard methods were developed using partial least squares (PLS) regression. The best data preprocessing, consisting of absorbance transformation and mean centering, reduced estimation errors by up to 20% compared to raw reflectance data. Good estimates ($R^2=0.83$ to 0.92) were obtained using spectral data for soil texture fractions, organic matter, and CEC. Estimates of pH, P, and K were not good ($R^2$ < 0.7), and other approaches to estimating these soil chemical properties should be investigated. Overall, the ability of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy to accurately estimate multiple soil properties across a wide range of soils makes it a good candidate technology for providing at least a portion of the data needed in site-specific management of agriculture.

  • The fiber optical temperature sensing device was developed by using a Fiber Bragg Grading (FBG) sensor and a linear transmittance optical filter. The temperature change causes change in the FBG sensor reflectance wavelength and the reflectance wavelength from FBG sensor is transmitted to a linear transmittance filter so that the optical signal value is determined by the wavelength. The temperature can be measured by the optical signal value by passing FBG reflectance wavelength to the linear transmittance filter. Using the developed system, temperature ranges from $10^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$ were measured and the measured data were almost linear.

  • An optical semi-automatic titrator was constructed employing the technique of the reflectance spectrometry and was tested for the determination of the end points of the acid-base, precipitation, and EDTA titrations. And since the current optical semi-automatic titrator built on the principle of the reflectance spectrometry could be successfully used even for the determination of the end point in the precipitation titration where the solid particles are formed during the titration process, it was found to be feasible that a completely automated optical titrator would be designed and built based on the current findings.

  • A surface-normal input/output volume holographic grating coupler (VHGC) operating at 1550nm wavelength region by using a $10{\mu}m$-thick DuPont photopolymer film is designed and fabricated. The angular and wavelength responses of the input/output VHGC are investigated in order to validate applicability of this device in integrated optics and optical communications. The effect of incident-beam position on the output reflectance to determine optimum condition for input coupling is also presented. The fabricated input/output VHGC exhibited an angular selectivity of ${\sim}0.027^{\circ}$, a wavelength selectivity of ~0.8 nm, and an output peak reflectance of 34.13%.

  • Optical properties of PET(Polyethylene terephthalate), PC(Polycarbonate), Acrylic resin and PE(Polyethylene) sheets were studied as a function of heat treating temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ to $150^{\circ}C$. By the heat treatment, optical properties of transmittance, absorbance, and reflectance showed a considerable change with different ways according to the materials. To understand the reason of optical property change, X-ray diffraction and surface morphology were also investigated. It was observed that small crystallite and pore that can cause scattering largely affect the transmittance. It was suggested that change of surface chemical bond induce the reflectance variation.

  • In recent years, the optical properties of multiple-scattering media like tissue have been studied for their potential applications in medicine. In this work the optical properties of multiple scattering media were investigated using the time-resolved reflectance measurement. The reflected light was measured by time-correlated single photon counting system. The transport scattering and absorption coefficient are related to the initial rapid decay and the subsequent decay in reflected light, respectively. Also the optical properties of the samples were measured by conventional method, ie., using continuous wave light. When the distance between the light source and the detector is over 8mm, the optical coefficient can be measured accurately using the suggested method.

  • Relatively simplified method for determination of surface reflectance has been used by using the ratio between SWIR and VIS band reflectance over land surface. The surface reflectance ratios (SWIR/VIS) were estimated over land in Korea from Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectre-radiometer (MODIS) L1 data. The ratios by using the minimum reflectance technique were lower than those by MODIS operational aerosol retrieval algorithm. Although the comparison between MODIS and sunphotometer Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) has a good correlation coefficient (R=0.84), slightly overestimated MODIS AOTs were shown with a slope of linear regression line of 0.89. The comparison between the ratio and AOT dearly exhibit that the error of MODIS AOT could be originated from the underestimated surface reflectances by MODIS operational algorithm.
